The lakeside Boathouse Restaurant is OK but mainly casual and for me uninspiring fare. Service is efficient and staff attentive. Somewhat expensive but reflective of the resort and its generally well-heeled clientele. The Chalet/Condominium style accommodation, not that we experienced it, has catering facilities. This would be advantageous for many as nearby Gravenhurst offers limited and unexciting dining and Bracebridge much the same. During our stay it was mainly large families and the beach areas were lively and crowded, although guests had the option of three pools in the complex.. The attached golf course is renowned and highly regarded in the golfing community and not for high handicappers. Again, another expensive aspect of this resort. However, If you are not budget conscious and enjoy spectacular views and lake activities it should easily provide a satisfactory break or vacation for every age group.

The beds are absolutely incredible leading to the best sleeps ever! We've stayed in both resort view and lakeview rooms and love them all the same. The staff go out of their way to make your stay great from recommendations for dinner to going above and beyond! They heard we had recently got engaged so when we arrived there was a lovely note from the staff saying congratulations. One year we came up for thanksgiving which was a couple of days after my husband's birthday and when we got to our room there was a lovely happy birthday card and a bottle of wine which we enjoyed while watching the sunset. The golf course was lovely. It was perfect for both our levels, challenging but fun. They space out tee times so you really feel like you are the only ones on the course. Normally, there is a package deal with meals for about $50 a day. From what I have experienced, that is a great price. They weren't offering the usual buffet at their weekend breakfasts, but instead delivered breakfast to customer's rooms upon demand. Any needs were accommodated efficiently as long as communication was followed through and the limited staff was given enough lead time. I had the bacon and eggs breakfast delivered, which was wrapped in plastic, and included eggs, bacon, home fries and toast, along with a fruit salad. The only thing missing was coffee. I didn't order coffee as I normally make my own at these type of events. I was fine without them making it for me. Other restaurant meals got good reviews from our crowd, and our communal meal Saturday night was nothing short of amazing, especially considering the short staff. Everyone ordered what they wanted off the fairly large menu, and the food came out hot and without a lot of waiting. Plenty of cocktails were made and there were a couple rounds bought by one of us, with everything going smoothly. I wouldn't guess that they were short-handed as we didn't feel it. As for accommodation, there are different cottages available. Everything from what looks like a tiny house that only has a front porch, a bedroom, and a bathroom, to a larger unit with jacuzzi and air conditioning. One of the structures is a sauna, which is a favorite in the winter apparently. The site has a sailing poster up for a local group, and has sailboats available for use. There are also canoes and peddle boats. In the seasonal section on their site, winter activities include snowmobiling packages as well as ice-fishing on the lake, which appears to be a specialty. Iconic Canadian activities that are sure to impress your guests from abroad. I can't say enough good about the staff I met on the weekend, just an amazing group of people, some of whom even joined us at our communal bonfire which ran late both Friday and at full tilt Saturday night until some rain put the fire out in the wee hours Sunday morning. Minden is nearby and has typical services, and my Fido phone had full bars at this location. Not far up the road is a famous lookout tower that gives an impressive view of the Fall colours from what I understand, and gets super busy at the height of that epic season in Ontario. Overall, everyone was happy with their stay at Red Umbrella Inn and I would love to return with anyone who would appreciate typical Canadian activities in a relaxed environment any time of year. However, half the party got our seafood dishes in a regular amount of time while my parents both waited a really really long time for their cooked entrees. The server said that my dad's burger (which he requested with no cheese) had been made with cheese and needed to be cooked again (this took another 30 mins). My mom's ramen didn't come out until we had finished our seafood, ordered additional dishes since we were still hungry, and were being served those second orders! When we asked the server why it was taking so long he just made a face and said he didn't know. The restaurant had a corporate event buffet being served but otherwise did not have a lot of parties, so it didn't make sense the food would take so long. There is Roku TV in the main lounge but channels mainly limited to streaming subscribers. The large secluded pool looks looks nice but was not accessible presumably for maintenance or repair. The staff seem locally recruited and were very pleasant and helpful. A variety of boating equipment, tennis court and mini-beach were available. As for the food..oops! Plenty of it, a reasonable variety for a short stay but not up to par. Breakfast was fair but not inspiring with the typical hot & cold mixed buffet. In fairness, one cannot account for personal tastes but I would say the dining experience brought back memories of my first experience in Canada in 1980. Much can depend on what the kitchen staff is provided with but Kraft-style grated Parmesan has no close connection to real cheese so let that be a clue. The service incidentally was excellent. As someone who prepares and cooks food daily I don't want to be over critical when food is prepared for say 10 or more where attention to individual dishes and timing can be an issue. However my 5 star rating for the food is 2 only saved by the Desserts and Breakfast. Everything else at the resort site was 4 star. Didn't use the spa or fitness centre. Loved the quiet and peaceful setting. I think there are some larger cottages with kitchens and likely access to some fresh supplies in Port Sydney....that would be my choice!

We stayed on the first weekend in July during a heat wave and some intermittent rain, which seemed to have brought a lot of mosquitos. There's also leeches present in the water so do be mindful when going swimming in the lake. The breakfast buffet was very delicious. The rooms have great sound proofing as the cabin next door were up partying late at night and we didn't hear them at all.
