I was calling around to all the vets in the Athens/Oconee area and getting pricing because having a dog's teeth cleaned can be very expensive. (Our previous vet in Atlanta, a great vet, whom we loved and trusted, was quite expensive.) I think I spoke with 16 vet offices, and I was most impressed with Holly, the office manager, at Central Oconee Animal Clinic. She went into great detail explaining how Dr. Mathias would take all the additional precautions necessary to protect the health of my 14 year old dog. This gave me confidence to proceed with the cleaning, and their price was reasonable, too. They also worked with us to accommodate our schedule. Since Dr. Mathias didn't know anything about our dog, she conducted a very thorough physical exam to determine if it was safe to clean her teeth (and, of course, did blood work also). We were pleased with the experience. We had found our Oconee County vet. Our dog was later diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, for which there is no cure. All you can do is try to prolong the dog's life as long as there is some quality of life left to enjoy. Dr. Mathias was extremely caring and compassionate. She was very thoughtful and careful in every medication prescribed and every test she performed. She always explained all test results in detail. She took a lot of time with us, and her fees were very reasonable. She explained what all our options were, so that we could make informed decisions. When the day came to say goodbye to our sweet girl, Dr. Mathias and Leslie, one the great tech's at Central Oconee, were kind enough to come to our home. I would highly recommend Dr. Mathias and everyone at Central Oconee Animal Clinic.

The process to secure an appointment is not particularly lengthy but we did have to make our date 3 months in advance. UGA VTH has an emergency department for urgent care cases. Our experience was very satisfying. Dr Timothy Vernier and his student assistant, Lexi, explained what we could expect from our day and after an initial evaluation we asked for a set of xrays so we could have a good starting point for regular annual evaluations to determine the progression of his condition. Our final meeting wrapped up a thorough and, we think, productive day. We found the fees reasonable and comparable to what we paid in the past for evaluations of this kind with other dogs. All in all, we recommend UGA VTH for your small animal's healthcare. P.S. While you're there read the book about the wonderful pets, large and small, furry and feathered, all loved and brought to UGA VTH for treatment.

That Saturday night at midnight when I realized that we could not let him continue to suffer, I emailed Paws to Wings. I was so afraid because I knew that it would be difficult to find someone who could help us on a holiday weekend. When I awoke on Sunday morning, Dr. Simon had already emailed me back, letting me know she would be happy to help us. She came that Sunday afternoon. It was one of the hardest things that our family had to do together, but she made Jack's passing so peaceful. She was so sympathetic to our family, both in her emails and when she came to put him to sleep. Our family will never forget her and are so thankful that she was able to help us so quickly. She even mailed us a sympathy card a few days later, which meant so much to us.

When we arrived our records were out on the desk and already reviewed. The staff took her immediately for examination and within 10 minutes they shared their findings from the exam and bloodwork. Turns out our baby had suffered a perforated hernia and was septic with her white blood count "off the charts".
