The community manager Brandon has been great and helpful- but has many barriers to actual solutions. Now I am getting collections notices for the whole year when I haven't even used the office once and turned in the keys already. The space is a space, but the customer service is abismal and they are unashamed and unwilling. Smh. I never expected this to occur- seems completely opposite of philosophy of the place they try to make you believe before signing the contract. I do not recommend. Find a private owner for a space instead of these bloodhound corporations and their management team.

As someone who has been throwing pots for a few years, I'm definitely eyeing the the Studio Artists which is designed for independent ceramicists. The studio space itself is pretty large and Kendra keeps a large supply of clay, tools, and other items you'll need for throwing pots or hand building. Even more importantly, pots get fired pretty quickly so you're not waiting weeks to finally get to your batch of pots that need to be glazed, etc. Kendra also works with you on honing in on any techniques if you've got the basics down, or helping you master the foundational skills. Given the pottery studios in the DMV are always full and have waitlists, it was very exciting to see this new studio open up and actually get a spot without wondering if I'll ever get a chance to take a class!

The Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is a nonprofit center specializing in papermaking, printmaking, and book arts. It was founded in 1981, but more recently it moved into the historic Arcade building in the Hyattsville Gateway Arts District. They offer artist residencies, studios for artists, workshops, instruction, artist talks, and other events, including classes for the public. They sell pieces - large and small - and they have a small shop where they sell prints, cards, and other items. If I lived nearby and had the slightest artistic talent, I'd want to spend time at Pyramid. What a great resource for people who make art and love art in the Hyattsville area! ArtSpace is a small art gallery and studio where people of all ages and abilities can create beauty. On Mondays, there is a toddler art class. I think now it is about $10/class, and operates as a drop-in situation. Children create a few specific projects set out for the day (lots of fun activities to reflect the seasons, and great attention to honing fine motor skills) in the first hour, and a song/story time upstairs follows for the final half hour. For several years, this Monday morning class was a highlight for both my daughters and I. Other classes exist for adults, including weaving and pottery. There is also open art time for adults. A few specific gallery exhibits happen throughout the year. One year, my moms group rented out the space for a paint night experience and had a blast. It's a wonderful, albeit small, space, and a wonderful part of the Shaw community.
