Free parking makes this a better bet than the Odeon in town and if you go to a cheap monday night film - it is even better value.

The bar and food have improved greatly since a refurbishment a few years ago and it feels so much more personal and a sophisicated night out than going to a multi-plex. As an added bonus you can park close by for free, which is unusual in Canterbury and there is a regular bus service into town.

Although, standing at the Ickes office for 5 minutes waiting for someone to turn up and take too much money from us isn't.. No one even shouted to say where to buy tickets, instead we had to shout over to the guy selling popcorn, to which he replied..over here... It wouldn't of been a problem if there was a sign or if they hadn't watched us stand there knowing what we were waiting for. Once we bought out tickets we thought we would waste a little time in the arcade, which used to be a lot better. But we couldn't because the change machine wouldn't take any kind of money from anyone.. Sooo we just watched our film, which wasn't the best but that's not anything to do with the cinema mind, the 35 minutes of adverts was a bit much though

The second smaller screen is very intimate and is enjoyable when it is quite empty but I find it quite annoying if it is full up and there are people chatting or messing around. This is my one complaint about this cinema, I have seen quite a bit of silly behaviour from groups of teenagers and I know that this can be difficult for staff to deal with. I do much prefer this cinema to the big cineworld in Ashford for atmosphere and price, the only reason we would go to ashford is if the film we wnted to see wasn't on in Folkestone.

The seats in the larger theatre are a little small and uncomfortable but the ones in the right hand theatre have been replaced. What I love about this place is they still have a reasonable policy on charging for popcorn and sweets its only a little more than the shops, whereas at the larger multiplexes you end up paying more for a drink and pop corn than you did for the theatre tickets. This place is never a busy as a multiplex and its great for when you want to go to a new release film but cant be doing with the crowds at the multiplexes. Friendly staff, although it is upstairs so not good if you are disabled or need help.

The cinema is divided into 3 screens, Premiere, Century and Bijou screens, the biggest being the Premiere (this screen also has the most expensive seats £6 for their premier seats) and this is where most of the new releases are shown. The century and the Bijou screens are both quite a bit smaller (the bijou is like watching a film in your front room!) but both show the bigger releases a couple of weeks after and also show the more independent films. Overall a nice little cinema well worth a visit if in the area and dont fancy a trip to the big multiplex.

Instead security were fed-up with the behaviour of the manager and asked us to complain to the company Vue and the shopping centre. CS gave me 2x free tickets (worth £5 given Meerkat 2-4-1) which ran out during Covid so never used and CS refused to re-send.

You've sat in their seats, with your knees around your ears, and watched a film for a couple of hours. It was pretty okay, right? Try this, instead. The ushers, in their wonderfully kitsch red waistcoats will welcome you to the theatre, with reasonably priced tickets and even more reasonably priced food - at a single pound for a large Coke (and it IS Coke), I wasn't complaining at all. The one screen does limit the choice of films you can watch, but that's not a problem since you can only watch one film at a time, and there is as much legroom as any other place. The charm of the place, though, is its spirit. The Royal is one of those cinemas that we see in TV dramas from the 60s and 70s, with a proper stage, tiered seating and paintings on the walls. I've taken several people to The Royal, and all of them have since been back. It's worth a look, just for the experience, and the cheaper prices.

I once wrote to Vue Management to complain about Vue in Romford. The seats were soaked in God-knows…read morewhat, the screens were covered in mess, there was popcorn everywhere, the projector was projecting wrong, there were balloons randomly in the theatre blocking the top corner of the screen. Their response was at least honest; "Unfortunately, due to the clientele in Romford it is difficult for us to maintain a consistently high quality" - and I believe them. The Vue in Romford is decent as Multiplexes go; but the problem comes when you find lots of kids who'd rather text each other across the room and make random turrets type noises than watch a movie. We used to avoid this by going to screenings at 11pm. But we found that although the kids were gone, their mess wasn't. I complained a much of times and to be fair to them, I got a few free tickets-- but it got to the point where I'd rather pay to go somewhere else and not have to sit on someones unwanted popcorn. Cinematically; the films are presented well; good sound and good size screens; but often you'll find coke splashed on screens or my biggest problem; holes in the screen (meaning shiny bright sparkling areas). A cinema that tries to be good but doesn't quite pull it off. Go elsewhere.

The lobby looks nice, but is always pretty busy during the evenings so I suggest getting there early. As Paul mentioned there is a lack of food, but to be honest there aren't many cinemas that do a huge range. As this is near a shopping complex there are a few places you can go to eat. I am a huge popcorn fan, and Vue does do tasty popcorn. The screens are good and the seats are comfortable, this Vue is great to watch any film =)
