This is a great place for anyone that likes collecting minerals and getting a little dirty. This weekend I came here with my friends Gina and Barbara. We met people called Adventure People from Meetup.com. From Pasadena it took us 2 hours to get to the mine entrance. We were told to arrive at 10:30am and we were on time. The people at the Oceanview Mine really have a well organized operation for the gem dig. The dig was $60 a person. At 11:00am an orientation presentation was given by one of the crew members. They explained what and what not to do when we screened for our gems. Each of us was assigned a table, small bucket, two sieve screens, and a small potting shovel. Don't for get to buy yourself some rubber dish washing gloves. The gloves saved our hands from getting dish pan, I mean gem pan hands. Our group was given 4 hours to find anything we could fit in a 5 gallon bucket. That's another thing. Remember to bring a 5 gallon metal or plastic bucket to take anything you want to keep. During the 3 hours I dug I found a couple of nice pink tourmalines. I also found some nice black (schorl) tourmaline in feldspar. Everyone was given an opportunity to take a tour of the actual mine. 4 people at a time were able to hop into one of the mines small ATV's to go to the tunnels of the mining operation. We were lucky enough to have the owner of the mine, Jeff Swanger, give us our tour. It was a fun trip and quite a learning experience. Our group was asking so many questions that he spent more time with us, about 30 minutes. We even got to see the inside of his house. Inside the house were photos of tourmaline samples that had sold for some big money and he explained that even the Smithsonian Institute has some of his samples from his mine on display. After our ATV tour we were hungry. The dig area has some picnic tables with a metal covering for shade. We brought an ice chest with sandwiches and after we were full we went back out for the final hour of our dig. All of us had a great time and I will definitely be returning. Maybe next time I will fine a large kunzite crystal. Two people we did not know were lucky enough to find 2 large kunzite crystals. They looked to have been about 4 to 5 inches long. Oh well next time might be my lucky day. read more

We had a wonderful time learning about gems and getting to have the hands-on experience of looking for them here in the discarded piles of rock and dirt that come directly from working mines. Awesome instructors lead you step-by-step through the process and help you identify hidden treasures as you sift through the dirt. Don't be afraid to get dirty because you will. Okay let's start out with what you will be actually doing for 4 hours of the visit. You will be standing outside in the hot sun, so bring a large umbrella or a overhead tent, digging out from a large pile of dirt that has already been scavenged through by the professionals, so don't expect to find "gems" or very large minerals that would be displayed for $100 for sale at your local crystal store. The kids will probably enjoy it for the first hour then after you"ll just be waiting for the tour which lasts 10minutes. The mining caves you WILL NOT ENTER, so that was a big deal breaker for me because I was expecting to wear mining helmet and gem picking the cave for a Real adventure scavenge. Other than that, $75 is overly priced for adults. $25-$30 would be more fair for standing around digging through leftover scavenged dirt. To be honest, you could probably spend $10 on random small rocks and crystals, cover them with dirt, then have your kids wash, brush, and clean them in your back yard. The staff were okay. They could've been more enthusiastic or at least watch some videos on how to make content more entertaining but I'm sure they'd rather be somewhere else then hanging around the hot sun teaching kids to dig through rocks. I'm surprised I've never given this place a review because I think we've been here at least 5 times now. I thought for sure I would be downgrading my existing stars instead of just posting a new review. So, we may or may not come here again. I don't know. The service today was pretty crappy and the bar is pretty low for this place because it's cash-only and you do everything yourself. Other than help you figure out if you've found something good, the only other things that the staff is there to do is refill water in your rinsing pan and make sure that people adhere to the rules. Given that we're still in a pandemic and I'm not entirely sure this business was supposed to be open yet since it's non-essential, you would think that they would be extra cautious about how to place us. There were about 1/3 of the tables used and instead of spacing us out with 1-2 tables in between us (or our groups), they had us all next to each other. The staff wore their masks sometimes when engaging with someone with a mask but didn't bother to wear one with people who didn't wear a mask. So weird. Finally, they only refilled our water once -- and I had to ask for it and basically justify it. So lame. And they didn't "fluff" the pile like the regular people normally do. Where do I even begin?! I had an absolutely wonderful time here this weekend. Saturday I participated in the Oceanview fee dig. This is where you are assigned a table with all the tools you need and in the middle is a huge pile of tailings. After a brief conversation about the rules and what not it was time to fill our buckets and start sifting! And let me tell you, what an awesome experience for a newbie rock hound. The price is $75 and you can take home a 5 gallon bucket of treasure. Anything you find you get to keep. It was great. There's a shaded area if you want to take a rest. There are picnic tables under the shade of trees. All the people working there were helpful and informative. The atmosphere was chill. The comradarie was nice. Everyone seemed to be excited when you found something cool. I would absolutely recommend this for any budding rock hound. Now as for Sunday, I attended the Pala Chief Mine dig. Bring your own tools and be ready for a treat. I must say that the head Miner Steve was fantastic! After a brief and informative safety meeting we were off on our own to explore and hunt for treasure. And boy oh boy let me tell you the treasure I found! Honestly I nabbed up a couple of perfect pieces of watermelon tourmaline, feldspar with tourmaline inclusions, garnets in feldspar, beautiful quartz and the deepest purple lepidolite I've ever seen... the list goes on. All the people working the dig that day were friendly and knowledgeable. And again the commradarie was great. I met some really nice folks whom weren't shy to show you their loot. The weather was perfect this last weekend... the rain storm that came through on Friday, really did some magic exposing a lot of crystals right there on the surface of the ground. All you had to do was look down and bam there were things sparkling and catching the light just perfectly. Again this bring your own tools and dig was also $75 for the day. I will without a doubt be returning, and even bringing friends along next time. I would highly recommend this to any rock hounds that perhaps don't want to venture off on their own just yet. It was great having any questions answered by the staff. It was a friendly and welcoming environment. I just want to say to Jeff the owner - great job! Your staff is wonderful. The property is amazing - love the fantastic wall you've got going around the property. The gems here are truly breathtaking. I definitely feel like I got my money's worth. I just got back from a day at this mine with 3 other friends and I would highly recommend visiting! I read reviews and read their website to make sure I was completely prepared and I am very glad I did. You arrive in the morning (you need a reservation) and drive up to the site where you will have a station to set up. We chose to bring our own EZ-up canopy and BOY we are glad we did. They do have umbrellas they will give you to put over your station to give you some shade (I am not sure if they are free or rented) but about half way through our day we had a good 30 minutes of down pouring rain. Despite the 100 degree weather forecast. So we had plenty of shade and shelter from the sun AND rain. Once you are set up, they do a demo of how to use the equipment and show you examples of gems you can expect to find. Glad they did this because while some of the people had been there and knew what to do, we were new and would have been lost. After that you are on your own to start going through your buckets to find treasures! We had a blast finding cool stuff. These are my tips if you plan on going and have never been. - Bring lots of water and a cooler if you are with a group. - Bring a lunch (they have a shaded table area) - WEAR A HAT and BRING SUNSCREEN - Wear comfortable and weather appropriate clothing. You are literally digging in the dirt and getting wet at your station, wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty!! - Bring a change of clothes/shoes so you can change before you head home because you will be very dirty. - GLOVES. I brought some rubber gloves and opted not to use them but after a day of rubbing rocks, dirt, and water, I am wishing I had used them. - TAKE THE TOUR. They will ask if you want to go for a short tour around the other side of the mine and do it! You can see the amazing view and get a nice break Overall I am very happy with my day spent there and will definitely be returning. I had a lot of fun just went this past weekend for Bf's bday. The mine is so close to pala casino it's 2 miles away. You drive up the mountain and then at the beginning everyone gathers around and they show you some technique to sift through the dirt and rocks. For girls it's kinda tiring to move the thing to sift cause you're doing it for hours. All the tables are in a circle with the center a giant mound of dirt that they mined. Everyone rushes to the center with a bucket that they provide for u and shovels to get the dirt and rush back. The gems and show pieces were really impressive. They even give you a tour of the mine although I was kind of scared cause they drive so close to the mountain in a 5 person golf cart thing. I'd go again although I wished I got bigger gems. Check out my pics I think i'll make a pendant out of my big quartz. Other people got really cool stuff like aquamarine and pink gems that were really big. I'd go again. Bring a cooler with ice and drinks and some lunch you'll be hungry and thirsty. It was fun the second time around i'd just sift through it quick to find the large gems. Advice! the smaller stuff are not worth it just shake the sifter quick to see the large pieces. You waste time looking through the small stuff. Wear the waterproof gloves that goes up to ur elbow cause the pool of water you are dipping ur gems in goes high and slosh inside ur gloves. Bring a hat! It's hot and sunny. Bring a bucket so u can just not even look and throw in ur finds otherwise u slow down to put it in a bag. HAVE FUN! read more

I'd like to include the opinion of someone who didn't find a $200 gemstone. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy the the previous reviewers found precious gemstones but, being someone who didn't find a very expensive gemstone or specimen, I wanted to say that I still had a blast visiting the Oceanview Mine. Our trek to the middle of nowhere started after turning onto a dirt road and being greeted by one of the many blue-shirted volunteers. After arriving at the digsite, we were greet by the sight of a big circle of sifting tables surround a 10-12 foot high mound of dirt in the center. First I should mention that shoveling, sorting and lifting large amounts of dirt (and hopefully gemstones) is no easy task and if this is your first time you will be aching. After a brief how-to session led by Simon, you're cut loose and free to grab buckets of dirt from the center pile and bring it back to your sorting station. You'll proceed to sift your pile through two different sifting trays before dunking the tray in water, all while hoping to find something special. We found lots of pretty rocks and a few quartz crystals, but nothing of any worth. The Oceanview experience still receives 5 stars due to the help given by the volunteers as well as the actual visit to the mine itself. It was fascinating to don a hard hat and go into an actual tourmaline mine. If you do decide to go, make sure you bring dishwashing gloves or some other waterproof glove. My fiance and I brought workgloves, which really don't help when you're loosening dirt from rocks in really cold water. Plus my fingers pruned up by the end, much to my amusement. My back was sore the next day, but we had fun and we earned our Maggie Moos. read more

Went with a big group of friends for a dual birthday. The staff is SO nice and SO helpful. Our car arrived promptly on time, so we had about 30 min to kill waiting for the official start. We immediately began asking all kinds of nerdy questions and scouring the ground for finds. Anything on the ground (NOT THE PILE) is free game while you're waiting to begin! We had so much fun! Took a tour of the mine and the old 1904 mine. I personally found only a couple small gem quality items, but my friends found lots! I definitely plan on returning to test my luck. This is the best mine i've been too. Awesome experiences and amazing finds. I've seen lots of negative reviews & i've been their multiple times. From what I see the reason people leave upset is because the amount of effort you put in it is the amount you will receive. Each time I went I brought a group of friends & hustled start to finish. Although it's extremely tiring, it's worth every hour. I've come back with POUNDS of crystals. I have a huge collection of aqua marine, pink, green, blue & black tourmaline, lepidolite and wayy to much quartz to handle. They have so many different types of crystals. My favorite ones in my collection come from Pala. I love this place with my whole heart and would definitely recommend! Bring an umbrella and lots of water. Make sure to wear clothes you could care less about, as you will become a dirt ball!! read more

This is one of the most unique and unusual adventures you may ever do! Who knew going through buckets of rocks and washing them off could be such fun! You just never know what gem you will find in each bucket! We were looking for something to do with our 12 year old grandson when he came to visit and found this site. If you like rocks and gems and do not mind getting dirty, then this is the adventure for you! He has told everyone that this was the best day of his visit to California. It is a little pricey, but after experiencing it, felt it was worth it. A short Jeep ride to see the entrance to various mines is also included. Just read the good information on their Facebook page, pack some food for lunch/snack and drinks. I was honestly shocked at how well kept it was for being on top of a hill only to dig through dirt! Then we were told that since we started early, we had to end early (about a half hour before they decided to end it). More communication about start and stop times would have been appreciated. We had such a great time here. We originally booked our reservation for a Thursday but got a phone call that the mountain will be closed because they need to move equipment on top so we can reschedule our reservation. So, we scheduled for the following Sunday. We started out screening under the Ez-up canopy in our station and had a picnic lunch in the tailings area and also took a jeep tour to the mine. We made a whole day out of it. Gems weren't hard to find @ least something. Most of them were spoiled. I wasted too much time looking thru the small stuff. Digging was fun and 3 hours was just about right. Found quite a lot of nice rocks, none ... Also brought home 5 gallon buckets of gravel. It was all worth the experience. Dirt cheap fun for collecting minerals and getting alittle dirty. Can find a lapidary and tumble or cut some of the rocks you find.. The staff is amazing and very knowledgeable about the digging site and super friendly with helping out cleaning your work station and the sand and gravel that collects at the bottom of your tub. Nice scenic drive to the middle of nowhere. Beware of rattlesnakes!!! read more

Jeff the owner is a complete ahole. We forgot to print out the waiver and when he showed up to open the gate to let everyone in he was immediately rude and scolded us for not "being prepared " and said he has no time to be "dicking around". He had extra copies with him all we needed was 3 signatures but as we signed he continued to remind us that "we clearly didn't read the info right" "and he's on a tight schedule " He was incredibly rude and unprofessional! Hard work, but really a fun experience! This is where I wanted to come for my birthday. I had been talking about it for over a year, but didn't make it last year because it was just too hot. This year, it was a cool cloudy day on my birthday and the perfect day for gem hunting. I had never been, so before coming, I did some research online to see what the deal was and get an idea of what to expect. I saw some samples of gems people found, saw how the digs were run... and was like, all right, let's do this! After I bought our tickets, I highlighted the things in our welcome sheet that I needed to buy to prepare for the event. We bought a 5 gallon bucket with lid from Home Depot, some rubberized gloves, and a plastic container to hold all of the gems that we knew we were going to find! I also got my hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug spray ready. At the beginning, the instructor tells you everything you need to know - how to get the rocks from the pile (scrape them with a shovel into your bucket), how to sift out the big and small rocks, how to wash them, what to look for, and how to get rid of the rocks you are done with and want to toss. Then you go back to your assigned station and go! You are working on your own time, so you can work as quickly or slowly as you want. There are two people to a station, so be mindful and take turns. There are nice normal restrooms there... and a water fountain. There is a covered area for sitting down with a group to eat if you want to take a break. Things to note: 1) Absolutely have your map that they give you printed... the directions are needed to get there. 2) Get there early! You get to dig in the rocks that other people went through the day before and threw out. They miss stuff and I found a pretty tourmaline in that pile. 3) Expect to get filthy and wet! Bring a change of clothes (and shoes!) if you are going elsewhere. I was going to my bday dinner in Temecula wine country afterward, and I was soooo appreciative for that advice. (Bonus: Stay at Pala and change there!) 4) Bring ice water and cold watermelon slices! You can bring lunch if you'd like, but I was so engrossed in wanting to find all the gems that I didn't stop to eat the lunch I brought. Someone gave me a slice of ice cold watermelon though, and I had a moment where I reverted to a happy 4 year old with watermelon dripping all over their face and thinking I was in heaven. Watermelon never tasted that good. Hydrate! 5) Do the tour! It's free and doesn't take that long. The ride is fun and bouncy with amazing views. You get to take some photos along the way and see some mines. It was fun. 6) Buckets of rocks are heavy. Apparently, carrying buckets filled with rocks for four hours can make you very achy the next day. I used muscles I didn't know I had. Just saying. 7) Have fun! Don't expect to get rich. Enjoy the view. Enjoy the adventure with your family and friends. And good luck! You can take home your 5 gallon bucket that you brought filled with rocks that you have washed and decided are keep-worthy. Yes, I brought back a few little gems, nothing incredibly awesome, but also had a lot of cool looking rooks with tourmaline and other things in them. I worked my behind off, but I had a great time. This review is for the Pala Chief Mine as the two mines share facilities and staff. Yes it's cash only at the gate. Are we here to have a unique experience or complain about payment systems..,Pala Chief is a bring your own tools gem dig. The two tools people need but don't bring ? Spray bottle + water , and soil screen of some type. They are the how you find the little stuff. Rock hammer and trowel are the real tools of the trade. Big shovel, rake, maybe but ...90% of people are digging in the tailings, they are pretty soft. If you dig into the mountain itself...you've been here before most likely. You have a spot picked out and you know what you need. I've been twice now found great lapidiolite, terminated quartz, pink tourmaline, black tourmaline. Gloves, hat, water for your spray bottle....and the optimism to dig in dirt for the next 4-5 hours. The staff running the mine are great. They leave you alone but seem to pop up when you have questions. They steer you gently in the direction of a gem or two....why did I know from the orientation this was going to be a great day? Our group of 40 on my first visit, 34 of the attendees were repeat customers. So that's the litmus test, repeat business. Steve and Levi led the dig today, great job. The other hopeful diggers came from all walks of life, and were easy to talk with. If you want a fun unique activity in San Diego....this may be just that. read more

What a great fun day trip to go mining for your own gems! It's better to make a reservation beforehand so they have everything prepped for you, but I'm sure you can show up as well. Already ready to go back! It's so much fun. Watching you tube videos help head of time for us. Staff was fantastic. I didn't find much mostly small items the size of a dime. But people around us found some large peices. I'll post pics. We went from 10am to 2:30. I took four bottled waters and two Bai juices. We drank then all. Was happy I froze two of the waters for our igloo bag. Kept it perfect. You will drop rocks on/near your feet so no flip flops. read more

I really enjoyed coming to the Oceanview Mine with my mom this last weekend! We have both always loved digging for treasures. It is amazing how quickly you get caught up with sifting through bucket after bucket of dirt, because the promise of gems is so exciting! I found about 5 gems total and lots of beautiful rocks that were still fun to collect. But my favorite was a quartz crystal that was about 2" long! The whole experience was fantastic! You start out with a demo from one of the employees talking about the best method to find gems, and what to look for. And then you get right to it. Jannine was so sweet in helping me identify, not only the gems, but what sorts of minerals that were creating different patterns in the rocks. After a couple hours when you start to get tired, it is the perfect time to take a tour around the property with one of the guides. Levi was our guide and was very passionate and informative. He showed us lots of pictures of huge beautiful gems that had been found in their mines which were amazing to see! Not going to lie, this experience made me wish I could dig for gems all day, every day. I will definitely be telling my friends about this!
