I was able to drop in on a 6:30 PM Friday night gi class. It was focused on Judo for Jiu Jitsu. I reached out via Instagram and head back from Professor Nat quickly. I got to the academy and was greeted by Professor Nat and signed a waiver. There were a handful of students for this class and within the class time there were warm-ups, takedown technics, nagekomi, randori rounds, and live rolling rounds. Professor Nat is a great instructor; very detailed and made sure to correct any mistakes he noticed. The academy is full of tough and technical students! Professor Nat is an excellent coach and his banter cracks me up. A lot of people with soft skin sometimes get offended but the man has dedicated his life to BJJ and is tough as nails. I was recommended to this gym from a friend and I was very impressed with the 1st class we were able to join as a test. My son has been at this gym for a couple months now. He is 5 and surprises me when he is able to walk me through the steps of various moves they are teaching him. He is actually learning self defense techniques and takes pride in knowing the oath and how to tie his own belt. I'm proud of him and the growth he's had since joining this gym. read more

So if you are looking for a great place to learn self defense, have a good workout, and have a great time doing it, this is the place. I haven't trained in Jui Jitsu for a very, very long time and I'm glad they did not throw me in with the colored belts and get my a** kicked. This Dojo is very structured, organized, and the instructions, and techniques are explained precisely and clearly, because if you don't, people can get hurt. I love this place. I travel to California frequently and always make sure to stop in to learn something new from Professor Nat! The staff and people who train here are super friendly. The facility is top notch and I was just really impressed with how things are done here. After visiting a few other jiu jitsu places in the area (and in Kentucky, strangely enough), Oceanside Jiu Jitsu is definitely the best place for me to train jiu jitsu. The atmosphere is a bit more laid back than other places, which tend to be filled with either overly macho grunts that want to throw you on your head at all costs or blue/purple belts that think the Ezekiel choke is the holy grail of jiu jitsu. Nat and Brendan are both very good instructors that clearly are teaching because they are passionate and have dedicated their lives to jiu jitsu. This is not the place to train if you just want to tell your friends you are a black belt in something. If you want to do that, just learn tae kwon do, know that you will get your next belt every 3 months or however often it is, and be able to defend yourself from paraplegics and small children. If you want to be able to defend yourself and have more self-confidence, this is simply the place to be. By the time you get your blue belt here, you will have no doubt in your mind that you have earned it, and I would put you up against a random Joe that has 40+ pounds on you no problem. Don't be intimidated to come in and learn. Nobody at Oceanside Jiu Jitsu is perfect and everyone is very accepting. There are people that weigh 140 lbs and there are people that weigh 225 lbs. I would at least recommend coming in and trying a free class or 2. read more

My children love everything about Oceanside Jiujitsu. At first they were nervous to even want to try it out. After the first class my son who is 10 and daughter who is 7 were all about pursuing Jiujitsu. The Master and instructors have a great program that keeps children committed and focused. I have been coming to Oceanside Jiu Jitsu for about a year. Nat and Brendan are great instructors. They are very eager to teach. I have learned a new ideas about jiu jitsu since coming to this gym. My jiu jitsu is better now than if I stayed in the Bay Area for Jiu Jitsu. Numerous questions I have asked about jiu jitsu and Nat has answered very intelligently on the specific position. The class starts off with warm ups i.e. light running, hip escapes, stretching. Then we may do some stand up techniques with the occasional grip break drill. We move on to the ground for a position that can branch of to positions as the class progresses. After 30 minutes or so we drill specific positions. Which helps us ingrain the position in our muscle memory better. Then the last 20 to 30 minutes is free sparing on the ground. The gym is very clean. They have boxes for each student to put their belongings during class. The location is off the 5. My journey as a white belt was long and arduous so when I was awarded my blue belt I felt accomplished because Oceanside Jiu Jitsu has such a high standard and tradition with Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu. read more

I went to this gym a few weeks ago while I was in town for a week, And all I can say is that it is nothing short of Amazing. The facility is super clean and the energy is awesome. Me and my wife train here and it's the best Jiu-Jitsu school in the area, hands down. The instructor is a Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu black belt (if you don't know who Saulo or Xande Ribeiro is, look them up) which is as good as it gets. It's definitely a team atmosphere where everyone knows everyone each others name and we all keep it technical and friendly on the mats (speakings of mats, it's the largest mat space I've seen). There's some places in Oceanside that are sketchy at best, do your research before training anywhere, check out instructor lineage, competition record, etc, otherwise you might end up at a place where you learn poor technique or get hurt. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't check this place out. read more

Professor Nat has taught so much to my son and he's come so far, beaming with self confidence and also developing a love for jiu jitsu. My son thinks he's a good role model and if my kid is happy and learning something, then that's a really good thing. He's not just another kid in the class, they actually get to know your kids and are constantly challenging them to do their best. Just before school ended he was approached by three older kids at school and they tried to gang up on him and take something from him. He was able to stand up for himself and defend himself. I have been looking for a martial arts program for my kids, age 7 and 9, for a long time now. I checked out quite a few before I got to Oceanside Jiu Jitsu and I am so glad I did! I went to some gyms that were very well known and was not impressed with there program at all. I felt like they were more interested in money then my children getting quality training. Some mixed martial arts places i checked out, Jiu Jitsu, one of the most important fundamental aspects to mixed martial arts, was not being emphasized, they were teaching a little of a lot of different arts, which may be okay for some but that's not what i was looking for. OJJ has given my children awesome training and confidence. Brendan, Nat and Penny are great, my kids respect them and want to be just as good as they are someday. I can't wait to get by youngest started, she can't wait either! So glad I found this program! read more

Love coming here to train! I have never done martial arts before nor was I ever on a sports team of any kind. Yoga was as much exercise as I would get. My husband has been into jiu jitsu so it was only a matter of time till he dragged me onto the mats. The team at Oceanside Jiu Jitsu is a great team to be on, put together by fantastic instructors who also make sure we are learning the techniques and encourage everyone to go out and compete. As a girl, I never felt out of place or like I couldn't do something.
