I always get chills driving thru Surfside on Collins Ave and 87th...remembering the tragic collapse…read moreof the 12 story Champlain Towers condo building killing 98 people at 1:14 am. Most were asleep at that time. This was national news for weeks. Only three individuals were pulled alive from the debris in the immediate aftermath. It was very upsetting to us as we live very close by there and frequently drive by. This happened 4 years ago. There is a new building going up now. Surfside is a small one-square mile oceanfront area that is a walkable, residential beach town located between Miami Beach and Bal Harbour. It is known for its quiet, family-friendly atmosphere, pristine beaches, luxury oceanfront condos and charming downtown with unique shops and restaurants. It offers a mix of luxury and small-town appeal, with beautiful parks, and public art installations like the "turtles" on a corner of Collins Ave. It is so pretty there during the Christmas season with all the lights up. Many tourists stay in Surfside instead of South Beach because it is more peaceful and quiet.

That is why turtle art features outside. A good community center offers varied opportunities for its residents of all ages. A shining example of a great community center is the Pinecrest Community Center across from Pine Crest Library. I was able to check out the Pinecrest Community center during the Pinecrest Farmers Market. Overflow parking for the market is behind the community center and library. The Pinecrest Community Center offers many free and low cost programs for all residents. These include personal enrichment programs, social activities, creative activities, active recreation, STEAM, arts, health, camps, and fitness programs. The community center gym is a popular destination for fitness enthusiasts. There is cardio and strength training equipment, stretch zone, locker rooms with showers, and personal trainers and fitness classes. The community center also has an indoor play zone for children and families and spaces that can be rented for private events. Outside the center is a shade covered playground and paved walkways for exercise. There is also a cafe called Elia Pinecrest that anyone can visit for dine in and take out. You can register for classes and upcoming events online and follow the community center on social media for event news. There are volunteer opportunities too. If you want to be active, make friends, and learn new things, the Pinecrest Community Center has just the right program for all ages. It kind of makes me wish I lived in Pinecrest.

Their website updates on Tuesdays at 5pm for new appointments: https://www.boynton-beach.org/news/covid I made my appointment online and received a confirmation email with a link to cancel or reschedule if needed. They provided a link to a form I could fill out ahead of time and bring with me. I was actually able to make an appointment for my husband for the exact same time slot, which was incredible convenient. Instructions were very clear: arrive no earlier than 15 minutes. 2 Police officers blocked the entrance and took our names, and directed us to park in what seemed like the back of the building. It was not immediately clear where we were supposed to go after that, since we were in the back, but since the only oher people who had been admitted were also getting the vaccine, we just followed other people to find a socially distanced line snaking around the building next to a chain link fence. Another police officer checked for the appointment times, more people took our form and looked at our id and told us when our 2nd shot would be. We followed the line into the building where we got a small white vaccination card. Firefighters gave us the first Moderna shot. A swift process! We were then told to write our own names on the card and take a photo so we'd have a copy of it. We then sat in a boring, blank room with paced out metal folding chairs while we waited too see if we had any reactions. It was very quiet in there. This was bare bones service with little info about what to note about reactions afterwards (and no actual checking of this). All in all, I appreciate the massive staffing efforts here to vaccinate multiple people in 15 minute time slots. They have an efficient, well-run machine of a system going on here. We did not have to wait for anything and the instructions given ahead of time were very clear. Thanks, City of Boynton Beach and all the folks who staffed this Center!
