We found ourselves in a situation where were not planning on bringing our puppy on vacation but ended up having to. We didn't know what to do and were beside ourselves. Enter Ocean Sands. Pam helped me book the reservation, and find the best price for us (it turned out that paying for boarding was cheaper than paying hourly, even though we didn't end up leaving our puppy overnight). We dropped the puppy off every morning (a 9-minute drive from where we are staying in Kill Devil Hills). She would hang out with Pam and Paul all day, then they would drive her back to us (Pet Taxi service) every evening. It saved our vacation! Our dog was so happy to see Pam and Paul every morning, which attests to the care and attention they gave her. This is a different kind of doggy daycare - the dogs don't play with each other but have separate, well-spaced kennels and are let out for play times every so often. My dog came back rested, hydrated, and she even ate while she was there (which is a huge shocker). Normally at regular doggy daycares, she will run herself into the ground and stop eating/drinking because she just wants to play all day. So this worked perfectly for us. We left our two dogs here for 6 days during our vacation. The process to book was very thorough. The two owners were super friendly. However, the first day they told us that the dogs were doing great -no issues. The second day the wife told us she actually doesn't interact with the dogs so we spoke to her husband. He told us the dogs actually ate for the first time the previous night. Even though we're aware dogs might not eat right away, we just thought it was strange it wasn't mentioned initially. Other than that, things were fine. When we picked up our dogs, I immediately noticed our older one had a TERRIBLE smell. When we got home I checked his ears and his right ear was bright red and filled with dark residue. Our vet tech cousin confirmed Oliver had a yeast infection that was about 3/4 days old. They never mentioned this to us. So we found this a little concerning as they didn't interact with the dog enough to notice because simply standing next to him you could smell it OR they did and just didn't mention it for no liability. read more

I have since heard from other businesses in the area that this is NOT a reputable boarder. Ocean sands is everything you could ask for while on vacation! Our babies love the beach, but our rental did not allow dogs. Pam was so thorough and helpful from the first time I called. Giving us the flexibility to take them on field trips during the day, and see pictures of them during their play time made our vacation so enjoyable, and stress free! 2nd Summer @ Ocean Sands K-9 Resort with our year and a half old Neapolitan Mastiff "Clover". Right when we stepped foot in the door we were greeted with such Love from both Pam and Uncle Paul. So wish we had a place in New York that we trusted just as much as Pam and Paul. Clover is a Diva Dog and she is treated as that which is not easy. We never leave Clover, during this trip we only visited Clover once for a day at the beach. Once done she couldn't get back quick enough to her room and more fun with staff. The days we didn't visit I checked in via email and received a speedy response from Pam on how she was doing. Of course she was always fine and happy. Seeing pics of her on their site made my day knowing Clover was having just as fun as us. Pam and Paul are forever family to us and can't wait to see them next Summer. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! I am incredibly apprehensive about taking my dog to any type of boarding facilities due to his high anxiety and me worrying about him. Unfortunately, the place we stayed this year did not allow pets so we had to make plans for our baby and I am so, so glad we found this place. The family who owns this does this because they care and love animals, not for the money. Pam was so involved with my dog and even told us she lost sleep over him having a rough first few days. She told us he was having some high anxiety which I expected but after a few days he adjusted and was a happy boy all thanks to her and her husband. They went out of their way to try multiple methods to bring comfort to him and get him adjusted. They also offer military discount which we appreciated and it was a fair price for the love and comfort my baby was receiving. They do not allow dogs to interact which I appreciate and dogs stay separate the entire time. They even posted pictures of my boy on Facebook so I could see him! AND you can schedule times to pick up your baby for playtime and adventure! Give this place a chance, they will understand if you're hesitant (it means you care), but you won't be disappointed! read more

We don't recommend this facility for your dog. Our 6 mos old puppy was injured and we weren't notified. When we picked him up he was limping and crying. We immediately had to take him to a vet in the area since we aren't from here. $194 later for x-rays and pain meds, the facility has not apologized or offered reimbursement. read more

Been bringing my pets here for over 15 years. Old management let the facilities deteriorate more than they should have but new management is a breath of fresh air and has been working hard to upgrade many aspects of the facilities. Last year during the Hurricane, I could not have asked for better care of my pet as the owners stayed on site throughout the entire event and provided prompt and timely updates of how my pet was faring through the storm. I also have never found a flea or tick on my pet when I picked him up. Sheryl M. should have read the contract better. It clearly states that reservations require commitment to pay unless given in such a timely manner to allow the space to be rented to someone else. read more

I did not want leave any stars for this kennel. I have multiple years dealing with pets and rescue pups . When I arrived I was stunned to see the condition of this place. PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE NO PICTURES OF THE INSIDE OF THE KENNEL ON THEIR SITE!!!!!! There were at least 5 box fans running in the hallway where the dogs were kenneled. The noise produced by the fans not comforting for any pup not to mention a safety concern. A hole in the ceiling. I could not leave my dogs there and had to locate another place to board them. This was my first time using a kennel and I'm giving it a big and loud 5 stars!! First as soon as I pulled up a young man ;) came out greeted us and helped me to unload the dogs and my stuff, which was a lot! We walked in and my first thought was the out door space was very clean and picked up. And then you walk in and immediately I noticed... It smelled good!!! Not like cover up but the whole kennel smelled good and clean, no pee or poop smell. And with the open door policy we where welcomed back to where the dogs would be staying and they helped me get them set up. They answered all my questions and let the dogs out to play before putting them in the kennels. I came three mornings out of the four and every time I came they were out playing with dogs and they were cleaning every kennel while the dogs where out. Now there was a lot of barking, Yes but I stopped and chatted with the owner several times. I noticed after about 5-15 minutes all the dogs stopped and started to relax and settle down. This was a huge relief for me bc I thought all the barking and noise would stress out my pups but to know that they all calmed down was big relief. I was welcomed to come take the pups for a field trip anytime I wanted and they also gave me some good local suggestions. My dogs had a special diet that they where happy to oblige with no extra charge. And allergies they where watchful for. I enjoyed our stay so much I would hang out and chat with the awesome staff. They were all very knowledgeable about the dogs staying there and their job and to my surprise about breeds. My Boston Terrier Cooper has a hard time regulating his temp. At one point we had been outside and when we came back in it became clear Cooper was too hot and everyone around stopped and helped me to give him a cool bath and treat it and make sure he was okay after I left. I also got to see some awesome photos of the pups while I was away and could have checked in whenever I wanted. The prices were very reasonable and I was very pleased. I only wish they had a kennel set up in my home town chapel hill bc not only would my pups visit often but I'd love to work for them. For our first time and just in general Ocean Sands K9 resort has earned their #1 spot as best beach kennel. Thanks again so much and I can't wait till next time. :) read more

If you love your dog you should give it its own vacation at this resort. I have always hired a sitter when going out of town. This time we wanted to have them close to us so they could play some at the beach. I have always been hesitant to board them anywhere. This is a great place where the people truly care about every pet that ever comes in their door. They have options in kennels and make everything so easy and pleasant for pet and parent. I love dogs and this place was so much fun that I wanted to stay and play rather than go to the beach. The owners are real dog people and that's meant as a big compliment. Thinking of booking a pet friendly hotel room? The rates here are the same that most local hotels charge for pets and less than some others. And you can come visit if you want. Wonderful boarding kennel - I never post reviews, but am now because they took all the anxiety away from leaving our 4.5 mo old lab at a kennel. They love their boarders and give them so much attention. The place is so clean and smells great. We checked our dog in and out each day and all of the dogs were completely quiet when I went to pick her up (no reservation needed (can pick up from 9 am - return by 4:30 pm), you go in and out and get your pet from their kennel and put her back - complete open door policy. It is so quiet there. When someone new comes in, they all bark, but quiet is the norm as the dogs are so content and loved. The owner is amazing and cares so much about all of the pets. It's hard to leave your pet, but I can honestly say, you'll have no worries at Ocean Sands K9 resort. read more

Please beware!!! This place gets no stars from me as it was the worst experience in over 30 years. Before we even got to the boarding part!! We decided later to take our dog on vacation with us, cancelled our reservation well in advance and they then informed us that they are charging us the full fee anyway!!! Plus our dog and I both were loaded with ticks and parasites just from visiting this place:( sorry, can only give it 1 star for being friendly at least!! She took excellent care of our two dogs for a night of boarding and a separate day of daycare. The pups came home both times happy and worn out - always a sign that they had a good time! There are multiple yards for them to play in and you can pick them up for field trips and return them later if you're wanting to keep them boarded (maybe you're renting a pet free home for your vacation yet want to have the dogs around for some trips). You can also escort your pup directly to and from the kennel area; you don't have to wonder about the state of the kennels themselves like you do at most facilities. The prices are very reasonable and the facility is clean and well maintained. We're very happy with the experience. We'll book some more time for our pups here next time we travel to OBX! read more

We have had some doozy of dog sitter experiences in the past, so I was particularly concerned about our dog's care. I started following you on FB as soon as I booked our vacation week...and grew increasingly excited about our dog's stay in the OBX, as well, based on pictures you shared alone. And even now that we have returned home, I still really enjoy seeing all of the dogs who come to stay with you...It is obvious how much you love what you do. And as a pet owner, that is really all you can hope for when you leave a part of your family with someone. You offered a significantly less expensive option for us (1/2 the price of Northern VA pricing) AND cared for our big sleepy dog as well as we might have. I don't usually write reviews but I think Ocean Sands K-9 deserves a 5 star reviews. On the second day of our trip here, things got changed at the last minute so we were looking for a pet daycare to take care of our puppy. We were able to find Ocean Sands K-9 online through so many good reviews and we were very glad that the process of dropping off our puppy was quick and easy. Luckily, I had all of my pet's health record saved in my email so I was able to email it to them before we got to the place. By the time we arrived, the front desk lady already had all of our paperwork printed and ready. We were a little skeptical at first when we got to the place as it looks a bit old and run down from the outside. However, everything changed the moment we stepped inside. The staff were very friendly and care about our dog. We felt at ease when we left our puppy in their care. I like how we were able to check in on our dog at anytime during the day by giving them a call. Our dog was worn out by the time we came to pick her up. She was knocked out the moment she got into the car. Overall, this place was a good experience. read more
