Having never been to any other hairdresser than the family-run salon I'd been going to for years, I…read morerecently visited Lazarou Brothers, Caerphilly Road for the first time. Typically, I'm not a 'girly girl' and have never bothered having more than a quick trim, maybe twice a year, and i had felt a little apprehensive stepping into this fancy-looking salon. I wasn't sure what to expect, and was a little nervous (though excited) at the prospect of paying for something more than your average cut-and-blowdry. As soon as I walked in though, Flora, Chantelle and all of the team made me feel at ease. They were chatty, friendly and professional, and Flora (who I believe co-manages the salon with her brother) is obviously very proud, and rightly so, of the excellent reputation which Lazarou has earned. My hair was dark red-brown and had quite a lot of colour build-up from using box-dyes over the years. My hair is also long and very thick. I wanted a full head of Balayage highlights and was well-prepared with pictures of how I wanted my hair to look. I was well-advised by my stylist, Flora, that the colour contrast of the highlights would be unlikely to be as bright as the pictures I'd shown her. Flora was very careful not to give me unrealistic expectations, but all the same I decided to give it a try. I spent 3 hours in the salon in total and had a menu of complimentary drinks to choose from, including wine and hot drinks. I chose a Gingerbread Latte, and each time I'd emptied the cup (and finished off the little biscuit with it!) I was offered another. I also had a complimentary hand and arm massage whilst I was waiting for the highlights to take effect. Flora gave me gorgeous Balayage highlights in 3 different tones as well as some foils throughout. The results were stunning; somewhat subtle (as expected), but really natural and healthy-looking. I was really pleased with the look! I've had lots of compliments on it and I've since become a little bit vain, playing with my hair and enjoying the myriad of glossy, pretty tones :) Overall, I think Lazarou Brothers is more than just a hair transformation; it's an experience. And it's certainly one I'll be enjoying again very soon - now, I really must book that appointment....

Coray & Co. is a fabulous salon that was set up by Mark Coray back in 1996. It occupies a place of…read moreprominence at the city centre end of City Road. This end of the street is somewhat faded and dilapidated, making Coray & Co. shine like a jewel amid the semi-dereliction of its immediate surroundings. The interior is vast, and beautifully decked out; something that comes as a bit of a surprise... you certainly wouldn't think that the salon was quite as grand and that it occupies such a large space when viewing it from the outside. Being the stylists to celebrities like Sian Lloyd the weather presenter, Coray & Co. are not the cheapest salons in town, but they are definitely one of the better ones! Women's cut and blow-dries start at £43.90, and men's start at £28.90 They offer a full range of hair and beauty services including: cuts and trims, extensions (human hair options available), colouring (semi-permanent and permanent), manicures and pedicures, waxing, body treatments, facials and tanning. A full list of their comprehensive services can be found on the website, with full price list available.

It's a bit expensive, but the stylist here know their stuff. They take their time over you and you don't feel like your sandwiched in between better paying customers, like some other places I've been to. The stylists also take time to chat and figure out what you want and what your hair can cope with. The decor's a bit dated and the signed photos on the wall don't really endear the younger generation (do you really want to look like June Whitfield or Sian Lloyd?), but this is a salon that has a long history in Cardiff and is still around while many of their competitors have come and gone. Long live Coray & Co. It's open late on Thursdays by the way.

Came here last night for a deep tissue massage at 7pm. Still kind of emotional about what happened…read more I just want to warn people who came here before, maybe a few years ago, that Aurora has entirely changed. Possibly cemented by a very unrelaxing refurbishment. It's the least relaxing professional massage I've ever had. Before, Aurora used to be lovely. Great ambiance - gentle warm lighting, neutral palettes, soft towels, warm blankets, cushy chairs for the nail bar. There used to be a double treatment room. I loved it, but stopped coming because I found a nice cheaper place very close to where I lived and because a therapist [possibly no longer there] sort of strong-armed me into trying bellabucci cups in the middle of a massage. Which was a little bit much for me. Now, post-refurb, the reception area is very harshly lighted. The cushy nail bar chairs have been replaced by these frankly awful see through plastic things. Loud dance music was playing. Felt like I was supposed to be pre-drinking to go out clubbing. Alcohol probably would've helped. There was a selfie wall covered in the new logo, and golden framed pictures on the wall with offers and logos rather than well... pictures of something. Very black and white and gold. It felt impersonal, uncomfortable, stimulating. Definitely provoked my headache. So I go through to the massage room. The double room has changed, I was in a single next to it, I've been the room before. It was bare - no fluffy blankets, the towels were coarser, and there were people in the double room area [or what was it] talking loudly and audibly throughout my massage, laughing, joking, and even while moving around... singing. Outside my door. No music in the room, just the distant thumping of Radio 1-esque dance music and people talking outside. Also the lighting was extremely harsh, even in the room. And it was very cold! i don't understand why it was so cold! She asks me to get ready with my face up toward the ceiling and then leaves me there for ages, so I'm sitting there, already with a headache with the lighting, covering my eyes with my arm so try and prevent the headache getting worse. No pillow either, which we got before and I get... pretty much everywhere else I've ever been. The massage itself was fine. Cold. I was overloaded by sound and barely spoke, I was just trying to get through it for the sake of my muscles. I said my hamstrings were sore from exercise and she sort of adjusted, but not really, because I ended up yelping from the pressure and she adjusted after a chat. Later on I yelped from the back of my feet - older injury, and... she didn't even comment? I think she adjusted the pressure but. No comment. I felt really weird about it. Not even an acknowledgment that it had hurt me enough to yelp. Could have used some more pressure on my calves and my back, esp my neck/shoulder area. I tried to speak up once and she told me that she was warming up my muscles. But that didn't really seem to solve it generally. I don't think this is a good place for massages anymore. Might be the correct vibe for other treatments like having your nails done, ears pierced, eyelashes treated, maybe for hyped up eighteen year olds wearing sunglasses or something... but not to relax.

I happened to be walking down Witchurch Road the night that Viva officially opened to the public…read more Being incorrigibly nosey I popped my head through the door to ask what was going on... Within a matter of moments I was inside the door chatting with Beata about her new salon. It transpires that this beautifully decked out salon is her first, but she has been offered plenty of good advice from her top stylist, who has two hairdressing shops back home in Poland. Kusha has 16 years of experience in both cutting and styling hair, colouring and all other forms of hairdressing as well as successfully running her salons back home. She will now stay permanently in the UK as she has someone else handling her affairs in Poland. This is good news for Viva and it's good news for us! Prices are really affordable with cut and styling starting at £10.00 and a cut and full colour starting at £35.00. Hair ups are a little more expensive, but still competitive at £25.00 to £50.00. A wash and head massage is only £10.00. Being a unisex salon, men can also take advantage of the services offered. A dry cut will cost as little as £7.00 and a colour and cut is a real bargain at £17.00. They also do human hair extensions, with free consultations to discuss your requirements. What I really like about this salon is the attention to detail. Beata seems to have considered everything! There's even a small garden out the back where clients can sit and drink coffee and smoke if they want to, which sure beats standing in the road with foils in your hair which I have been known to do in the past! They have a number of introductory offers, and so now is a good time to get acquainted!
