these amazing police officers deserve a whole lot more love and respect than they actually get --…read morein my opinion. few nights ago i had a very scary situation happening outside my gate. Three thug types were trying to break into the gate and potentially house while i lli was sound asleep! i don't know what caused me to wake up bc there wasn't any noise, but when i did i knew immediately something was wrong and looked at the camera and saw them out there. i turned all the lights on and called 911. About 10-15 cops showed up within minutes and were right away making sure everything was safe and that these guys weren't hanging around nearby. Two officers came up to talk to me and tried to calm me down bc i was really freaked out by all this. They were super kind and helpful and gave great advice on what the owner of the house i'm renting should do to secure it and reassured me that if these thugs came back they would have a hard time getting into the house AND to keep my phone next to me and call right away if they came back. Cops have really tough jobs and these days little respect. Especially living in a city like SF where they favor criminals and police have to deal with so much politics and BS just to be able to do their jobs. Their jobs are to protect us! The leaders of this city sadly want to make that hard for them. That is super sad. They came to my aid in literally less than five mins, probably more like 2 or 3 mins and likely prevented the situation from escalating into something far worse! I love the officers at Taraval station and they've always taken good care of us. i will for sure miss them when i move in a few weeks, and hope that in my new home i don't have to call the police as much as i've had to while living here in Sf, specially the last few years. Thank you SFPD, and especially all of my favorite Taraval Station officers! you're the best!

The selection of books is really nice, and ordering books into the branch is easy. The summer reading challenge for kids has also been a fun annual activity. The library staff are wonderful and understanding even when we forget to bring our library card. The place itself is small but warm, welcoming and safe. The playground outside is also a great way for kids to enjoy their day. Highly recommend!

I'm here often to pick up large stacks of books, and let me just say- the SFPL app is game changing for me as a busy teacher. I follow a bunch of librarian/teacher influencers, and the moment they rave about a new title, I'm on the app placing my hold. Picking up books is fast and painless. Everything is always ready in one spot in alphabetical order- scan your library card, stack your books on the check out pad, and the machine takes care of the rest. Get a receipt printed or emailed. Now, is it a little chaotic being surrounded by middle schoolers using all the computers? Sure. But honestly, I'm glad they have a safe, supervised place to hang out. And let's talk about the real bonus: the Mister Softee and Magic Frosty trucks often parked out front. Free books plus ice cream? That's an unbeatable combo. Overall, Ortega Library is a gem. busy, messy, joyful, and incredibly useful. They do a ton of community events also. Your library card also gets you free museum perks, which I still need to explore but love knowing exist.

My car window was smashed, so I went to report it. Officer Finau was completely useless. Worse, he was manipulative. Nothing was stolen from my car since it was empty. While I insisted that he make a police report, Finau was completely lazy. He kept saying that most likely, they aren't going to find the perp, and that it's not worth my time to make a report since insurance is covering the damage, and nothing was stolen. I kept insisting that I wanted a police report to be made. He gave me a form and said that I should really think if I want to make a report or not, and if I decide to go through with it, to come back on a day that he's working so he can continue to help me. The whole thing was super suspicious and raised some alarms in my head. Why is this officer so insistent on me not filling out a report? Is the Taraval station secretly receiving a payout from the car break in people? I immediately went to the Mission police station to file a police report. The cops in the Mission police station were great and professional. I showed the form that Finau gave me to the Mission police station, and the officer told me that whoever gave me that form, gave me the wrong form. She never saw a form like that before. The Mission police station took my report, and I was out of there in 30 minutes without having to waste my time with someone trying to convince me not to make a report. Online, I found out that Finau and many other Taraval officers are making $200,000 a year. Huge waste of taxpayer dollars to pay lazy cops who don't want to do the bare minimum.

Recently I went to the Haight Street Art Center's Forever Grateful exhibition here, and I was reminded about the special nature of this space. San Francisco County Fair Building is versatile and it magically greets you before you enter the epicness of Golden Gate park. I appreciate that the concrete walls keep it nice and cool (especially during SF's recent heat wave). Despite being an older building - I have always found it well maintained. I think it speaks to San Francisco. There is no pretension about this space. There is nothing wowing or over the top. It doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. It invites a plethora of different kind of events - where anybody and everybody is welcome. I have so many wonderful memories here and I have always left wancing. Trust.

All these kids in middle schools and high schools all over California form teams and spend a few months preparing posters and presentations about a theme. It is one of the most amazing things I have ever participated in (as a judge) and highly recommend getting involved as a team coach, a team participant, judge, or volunteer. What is great is that this organization works with the teachers to integrate lessons into the curriculum, and this includes schools where studying international affairs may be seen as a luxury. Dana has, very intelligently, focused on two big events every year: World Affairs Challenge and the Media and Arts Show. Both of these forums get kids actively engaged by having them produce something which visually or interactively presents the information they have learned. I highly recommend the media and arts show this fall. Last year it was held at Zeum and it included our work from a very impressive, very diverse set of youth-centered groups, all hoping to get kids positively engaged with their community. It is being jointly hosted by World Savvy and Habitat for Humanity, San Francisco. Occasional volunteer, Alex

If you've ever used the Way Back machine to play the Oregon trail online or to look up what a website looked like in 1998, then you've used the Internet Archive. It's probably one of the most impressive and incredible FREE public service we have in the world that is *literally* run on good will, donations, and on the principle that access to information should always be free. We took a tour here on Friday when they do free tours (usually around 1PM) and you get to see the behind the scenes of how they archive works and some of the original servers that host ALL the data the year 1997 (yes, ALL 2-TB of it!!). The building alone is beautiful architecturally -- it used to be a Christian Scientist church -- and they still kept the pews in the main room, so it's a cool piece of history to step into. If you're free in a Friday afternoon in the Inner Richmond, highly HIGHLY recommend doing the tour and supporting (or donating) this wonderful institution. This is definitely one of the most underrated places in SF!
