We stopped in for a late afternoon refreshment. It's part of the Occidental Hotel and full of old things, all sorts of animals on the walls (bear, deer, elk, puma, moose, bison, etc.). They have two or three very old cash registers on display and the bar appears to be the original wood. It's really a piece of Buffalo history and we enjoyed our libation and talking to the bartender. If you find yourself in Buffalo, Wyoming on a Thursday night then the Occidental is a must if you enjoy Country/Bluegrass music. You will have a hard time finding a seat after 7pm as the place packs in customers and musicians alike for a jam session sure to entertain. Perhaps a half dozen or more talented musicians playing guitars, fiddles, mandolins, banjos and upright bases head up this jam while a dozen or more sit in a semi- circle up front playing along and waiting their turn to take center stage. My son and I were lucky enough to attend two consecutive Thursdays and each time he was invited up to play and sing songs of his choice accompanied by many talented and gifted musicians. We stopped at the occidental saloon and had been here a few years ago. Fabulous decor with taxidermy and just great old look. The way a western bar should be. But the service and prices are totally lacking. The surely unfriendly older woman bartender practically threw our drinks at us. No greeting, nothing. Time to retire!,,, This is a tourist town lady!!! Slow service and badly cooked steaks. It has a very cool western atmosphere, however. Restrict you visit to drinks.

Neat old bar. Bad food. We went on a Monday evening and I would advise going Thursday or Saturday.

We walked in, sat down, there were two people in the place so not busy. We sat for 15 minutes, they saw us come in. The server said be right there, she disappeared, the bartender did not even acknowledge we were there. We finally walked out. Very disappointing as the place was very cool. read more

Historical spot that we were able to visit late on a weeknight. We had just arrived in town and needed some drinks. Staff was decent, beers were good but the decor was the best bit. Definitely check it out and dont be scared of the pony-tailed bartender, shes harmless and just seemed to ignore us lol. read more

We had breakfast here. The waitress was attentive, kept our coffee cups full, I had the blueberry pancakes, very good. My 2 friends were pleased with their meals. A little slow but we roamed the historic hotel. Heck we are on a two week fishing trip so there was no hurry. read more

Whatch out for the pigtailed bartendress. She will scowl at you as you enter and ignore you to wipe the bar and take server orders as you sit. She will serve the locals but avoided me for 15 minutes. Wanted to dine at the Virginian Restaurant, but it was closed. We decided to grab a bite at the saloon instead. Wow, weird vibe. We were there on a Monday night and the place was relatively crowded. Everybody was staring at the giant flatscreen above the stage that was showing... nothing. Seriously, nothing was on the screen and everyone was still staring at it. Our server was challenged to put it mildly. She was taking forever and kept forgetting items in our order. The food was really salty and I couldn't finish mine. Overall, come for the drinks but not the food or the service. read more

The Occidental Hotel is noted for its history and fine dining at the Virginian Restaurant. We rolled into town after a long drive. All we wanted was a beer and a good burger at a friendly place. Our wishes were more than met at the Occidental Saloon. Lots of history and a century of artifacts on the walls including a Tiffany shade on the back bar (this will make sense when you walk in). We joined lots of locals at a truely unique and enjoyable old west saloon with good food. read more

We got the best service ever here. We arrived in town late and didn't want to get fast food for dinner. We called another restaurant and it was closed. We call the hotel restaurant at 9:15 pm and the owner said that although the restaurant was closed, we could come right down and she would make us a sandwich in the saloon. When we got there, she had talked to the chef and rustled us up some of the evening entrees. Wow! The atmosphere is wonderful and everyone was wonderful. We felt like royalty. Service makes all the difference. We're full-time RV'ers and love local bars so we can meet local people. When we came through here 4 years ago we had a great time with the bartender (a guy) and some of the customers. When we came in to town this time we stopped in, hoping for a little of the same magic. The bartender (a young woman) that waited on us was pleasant and happy, and we were having a good time. Then her shift ended and a miserable, older, grey-haired woman waited on us. We were very sorry we had a second drink. She didn't smile at anyone, and was actually rude to customers. A week after that we decided to try again. We peeked in and once more there was a different woman bartender. She didn't smile, but she wasn't miserable either. We should have waited 10 more minutes before sitting down, because in comes the horrible woman. To make a long story short, the Occidental is a cool place to go in and look around. It would be a decent place for a drink if the woman would retire/leave. We won't be back to try again. read more

Not deserving of 1 star. This is a quaint place with period decor, but the service was just okay, and the food was extremely poor. The French Dip was all fat (just gross), and the burger was a fried grease ball on a dry ciabatta roll that makes a Big Mac seem like a gourmet meal. Other customers complained of other issues. Avoid the place unless all you want is a beer. read more

Food was good, beer selection was good, the atmosphere is priceless. Whether you stop for a drink or a meal, the saloon is a must-see for visitors to Buffalo. If you're lucky you may get to enjoy live local music as well. read more

Love this bar's old time feel, but when we were there last week, the bartender was surly and downright rude. She was an older woman with long gray hair who was stressed, unable to handle the not-too-huge crowd and unfriendly. The rest of the staff seemed poorly trained too. It's too bad, because last year we had a great experience. read more

We ate at the buffet breakfast at The Virginian Saloon and it was TERRIBLE! They charge $12.00 per person for breakfast which does NOT even include a drink. There're were only about 10 items to choose from, which were always empty. The biscuits were hard as a rock. The eggs (scrambled only) were over-cooked, but ran out twice during the 30 minutes we were there. The sausage links and bacon were constantly empty as they only brought out about 8 pieces at a time. The only bread was rock-hard biscuits...no toast, English muffins. Even the gravy couldn't soften the biscuits. This buffet was the worst we've ever experienced, and we've experienced MANY. We watched and listened to customer after customer complain, so it sure wasn't just the 3 of us. Oh, and they had pancakes, but the 3--yes only 3--syrup containers were all empty. We actually shared our little syrup jar with the next table for their children. Save your money and avoid this buffet breakfast rip-off! This place doesn't even deserve one star, but I had to give it one star to post read more
