View from my aquarium hotel room. No balcony. No air con or waters off and on.
Melineh H.

No good story starts with "I found a used condom next to my VIP area beach chair, & when I called a staff member, he kicked dirt over it until someone cleaned it 30 min later. You read that right folks. Staff memeber kicked dirt on it until someone came and cleaned it; 30 minutes later. When I tell you I gagged and had to take nausea meds I am not exaggerating. I have ZERO coping skills in situations like this. After I complained to the Gm, ABEL, he said "well Its a different story if it was in your room" and "its a public area". Umm, no its not. Its a ROPED OFF VIP "ROYALE" area for customers paying extra so we don't experience sht like this. Cool story bro yeah it would have been a different sitatuion if I found a condom in my room because I would have grabbed my luggage and high tailed it out of this hell hole if anything like this was in my room and likely paid someone to take it and hang it on the Mangements door to see how he feels? My bad- didnt listen to yelp instead read TRIP ADVISOR that called it 4 star LMAO No air con for HOURS No water- NONE for almost 2 hours yesterday and when it turned on, it was brown. Security latch on my door broke off. NOBODY answers the concierge phone. Management is RUDE NO BALCONY in my room. I feel as though Im stuck in a dirty aquarium. CON**** there is a pharmacy across the road to get pills and pretend this is just a 3 day nightmare. You better believe AMEX is going to hear about this and trip advisor. Ive been coming to PV for over 16 years and NEVER had a bad experience until this trip because certain friends of mine kept saying "at least try something new". Nope; Im done. Im sticking to the 4 awesome resorts I normally stay at. You may ask "why didnt you leave and stay at another hotel?" Its storm season so the evenings are extreme weather and lighting- I just sucked it up since it was just 3 nights. Sorry but my yelp photos are a sacred place where I post pics of my cats and yummy salads. I am not going to post the above but if you must see, please go to trip advisor as I have posted a review there, photos/proof and brace yourself.

The front of the resort.

We stayed here 10/18-10/22/2025. The resort was nice and clean. But there is NO AC in the hotel other than the rooms and the buffet area. I want to emphasize on the NO AC in the lobby, the bar area or even one of the specialty restaurants. The ac in our room did not work, the room was so humid! We told the front desk about it and they sent someone to fix it but it was not. We went back to the front desk the next day to let them know there was no improvement, again they said they would send some to check it BUT they didn't come until the next day. Day 3 of not being able to sleep comfortably because of the humidity in the room. We went back to the front desk and they did offer us another room but it would be a downgrade and we would not get a refund for the difference. Since we booked through Costco we gave them a call and they did say if we decided to take the downgrade they would reimburse us. Within minutes of getting off the phone with Costco the front desk called us to see if there was any improvement with the humidity mind you they never checked with any other time we had complained. They offered us an upgrade free of charge and although we only had 2 more nights with them we decided to take it even though it was a HUGE inconvenience for us. The room was so humid we couldn't sleep so we said why not? Well the upgraded room was slightly better but the humidity returned that night. Our father's room had no issues with humidity or cooling. The food was edible in my opinion, it wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. You couldn't take any food to your room which we did not like because they didn't offer a late snack area like most of the resorts we have stayed at. If you like an open space resort where you feel all the humidity then sure check this place out. I would never stay here again unless they did some upgrades to the resort like have an enclosed lobby to have a drink or relax with the family.

I had a great stay at the Occidental in Nuevo Vallarta! Seeing other reviews here, I'm not sure if they really cleaned up their act or if only the people with mostly bad experiences reviewed this place. I was skeptical after seeing their Yelp page, but truly I was extremely pleasantly surprised. CLEANLINESS: Spotless. Everywhere. They were even cleaning the cement walkways by the pools. No problem here, I always felt very clean all over the resort. Housekeeping would even reorganize our bathroom everyday in a more minimalistic and organized way. So nice! FOOD: DELICIOUS! My mom and I were seriously blown away. Was absolutely everything a hit? No, but I'd say 95% of all the different daily food options were delicious as hell. They had rotating breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, plus refreshing juices. The buffet was even better than the restaurants they have on-site in my opinion. They have great drinks here too and yes, they are constantly pouring that liquor all day every day. Vacation, right? ;) SERVICE: Don't have a bad thing to say. Yes, some staff don't speak English but like - you're in a different country lol. I think that's expected! The front-of-house staff like bartenders, servers, front desk, etc., all spoke English. Not only that, but the staff here truly goes above and beyond. I have seen multiple examples of the staff caring deeply about any issue that occurs here, no matter how minor. Special shoutout to Carlos and Julio for being the best bartenders and servers! The have pool beds all over the pool then some by the beach as well. It's louder / more of a fun vibe at the pool with entertainment, periodic pool games, and drinks, then the beach area is a little bit away with more peace and quiet. I would alternate between the two areas. The only cons of the trip: - The pool bed takerers are real. People go out to the pool at 7:30/8am and mark their spot with their towels already so their bed is reserved for the day. Finding seating (especially 2 or more together for your full party) is scarce later in the day. Our first full day we got to the pool around 12:30pm and we only found 1 spot by the kiddie pool after 10 minutes of walking around and searching. I recommend getting to the pool early because of this. - You need to make a reservation for the other dinner places (besides the buffet obviously) early in the morning with the concierge. Otherwise they get snatched up SUPER quick. But to be honest, the buffet was better than the restaurants anyway. - They offer no transportation from the airport to this resort. They help get you a taxi back to the airport after your trip is done, but nothing to help accommodate you getting there. Upon site, we got a free upgrade for no reason. We weren't in the First Club (their ultimate premier club) but did get some sort of upgrade when we checked in. I'm not sure how it would be like without the upgrade, but I had a really great time here and I would recommend it to others! Thank you Occidental!

Nighttime ocean view from room

Had a lovely experience at the Occidental. Clean rooms and premises, friendly staff. Beautiful views. And you can't beat the beach and the ocean. Thank you guys!!

Mold in room ceiling

The Hotel was ok, definitely not worth the "all inclusive " price. First, they try to up-sale you to Royal status to use the private pool, get additional dinner reservations, etc. Second, every time we tried to do a dinner reservation, they were completely booked and could not accommodate us, our friends went and they're was an excess of 9 tables completely open during their dinner time! Lastly, there was a leak and mold in our room, you could smell it! When we reported it, they told us it was "condensation" and would not move us rooms. I was very disappointed as this was my big birthday trip and they would not make things right. Would not recommend this to anyone.

This place was wonderful - it felt like home. The staff were all amazing and did everything they could to make our stay memorable. Highly recommend upgrading to royal level as it was totally worth it. The food was very boring to be honest. If you are going for the food look elsewhere.

Pool and bar service-top notch. Great time..

The stay at the Occidental Nuevo Vallarta was disappointing in two areas-Check-in/front desk and the cleaning services of the rooms. I had booked two rooms at this resort and only one room was cleaned. I had to constantly call and request the service which was never done promptly. I am one that loves to tip accordingly to the customer services provided- in the cleanliness of the room and the lack of it being overlooked- I will not be returning nor was a tip given. However, the positives should be acknowledge- the employees at the buffet and the bars were outstanding. They did go above and beyond in providing drinks, asking if we needed anything else. The nightly entertainment also was outstanding. I really wish the front desk and cleaning department could get their act together.

Bird by the pool

In a nutshell don't go here. This resort is old and outdated. For starters the food isn't good, for an all inclusive I don't expect the best but I at least expect it to be worth it. The food lacks flavor and is never served hot, I couldn't even get a hot cup of coffee the whole trip. They have three specialty restaurants that you must wake up at 9 AM and stand on a long line in order to make a reservation for that night. It's vacation who wants to wake up early and do this every day only to be met with lackluster food. The one restaurant that was pretty good was their Italian restaurant surprisingly, at least that food was served hot. The pool is good but would be better if most of the kids actually stayed in the kiddy pool instead of flooding the main pool with large floaties. It sucks that you can't have snacks/ light eats brought to you by the pool or by the beach which is what I am used to at a resort vacation. The drinks are not that great except for the one bar near the lobby they were the best. The room smelled musty and moldy I found evidence of the previous persons shavings along the bathroom and there was other hair all throughout our room that was obviously not our hair so I seriously doubt the cleanliness of this place. The bed itself also smelled horrible which I believe was coming from the blankets. No matter how low we turned the AC it would not get cool in the room it's like they have a block on the temperature. Twice there were roach type bugs. The one good thing they had was that the wristband they give you it's also your room key that was a great help when it comes to carrying things around. As a resort that caters to people from all over the staff definitely needs to brush up on English. Thankfully I know some Spanish but it was really surprised that most didn't know basic things in English related to their job and my friend who speaks only English had to rely on me to communicate with the employees. Also when catering to people who are not from Mexico it would be good for the DJ to mix it up a bit and at least play a couple of English songs throughout the day. All in all this location is good if you are local and it's simply a couple of hours road trip away. For those who traveled hours by plane you will be highly disappointed stay somewhere else.

Ocean breeze while I check my emails

We have stayed here 3-4 times. VIP/Royal club is nice but a little pricey add-on. Tokyo & Italian are our favorite restaurants but buffet is good also. Great staff and activities . The sunsets are amazing

This was the view from our room.

Overall, was the food the service the atmosphere the maint. Of the rooms could be improved the water pressure little bit low but overall we had it an amazing experience we celebrated our 40th anniversary and so far it was very pleasant. I will recommend occidental to anyone.

We were really disappointed with our experience for a number of reasons. This trip was our "family…read moremoon" after my wife and I got married, we wanted to take our kids for a family friend all inclusive. The frustrations started with check in that took SO long. they required us to show proof of payment. our name and ID was not enough despite seeing our reservation there so i was forced to go through my old credit card statements from months prior to show them. Then the most egregious thing I have EVER HAD HAPPEN TO ME, is they required me to show proof that my children were MY children. They dont have the same last name as me so I had to pull up their birth certificates and I was required to email them to the front desk. My kids are 14 and 12 and never in my life have I ever had to do this. Its incredible offensive and as a queer/trans person with a blended family and with a woman of color wife, it just reminded us how invisbilized we are and treated differently. Then we finally got our rooms and asked for a cot for one of my kids since we paid for 2 rooms for the 4 of us. We never got the cot that night and had to ask 2-3 more times and finally got the next night. We had to do the same thing for a dental kit for my daughter who forgot her toothbrush. took a day. The room service always took at least 40 minutes, for dinner the wait was always 45m in - 1 hour. It was nearly impossible to find a place to sit by the pool unless you got there at 8am like all the others who post up with their towels and belongings and hog the same space ALL day. There were a handful of kind/helpful workers - Juan at the pool, the entertainment people really trying to show people a good time, and you can see the workers/servers are doing their best but they seemed understaffed and thats a hard rock issue. The food was ok. but my wife did not feel well on the last night and we think it was the dinner. The only time we had attentive front desk people was the folks trying to sell you on the thing they say is NOT a time share at a hotel next door (sounds like a timeshare). As soon as we were not interested in that, they were not really interested in helping us. Even when i was asking about other tours, they just kept saying they could give to me free if I agreed to this 90 min presentation and was very hard to get them to help me book something if i didnt agree so i gave up on taking my kids on a tour outside the resort. They explained a bit about the "resort credits" of $1200 - its somewhat helpful if you look at it as a reduction in cost but the spa/salon services are overly expensive so youre basically then paying 35% of the regular cost and then tip. If you look at it as a discount --its not bad but its definitely NOT free credits. Then we requested a late checkout from the ipad in the room. several times. no response. we went down and said we would be happy to pay $120 fee to keep one room until 6pm and they said they couldnt. but they could let us stay until 4pm on the property. the next day when checking out they claimed they didnt have that so i had to push back to get them to allow us this. we had already booked a massage for 4pm so we needed to stay there and have a place for our kids to hang out before we left for the airport. the last thing was they claimed transportation to/from the hotel/airport was included (a $200 value). But i never got instructions on how to book this. so i paid out of pocket $90 to get a van to get me and my family to hard rock upon arrival. i tried to book for the return as it was allgedly included and they said it was too late becuase i didnt give them the flight info 7 days in advance. so i then had to pay out of pocked AGAIN to get a cab to the airport (uber is WAY cheaper only cost like $15 with tip). Overall, I just dont think its worth the amount of money you pay to be constantly trying to be upcharged at an all inclusive and I wasted so much time of my very short vacation trying to get staff to take care of needs like cots, toothbrush. and then the inflexibility on transportation, check out time, and requiring me to show BIRTH CERTIFICATES of my own children. Offensive and rude and uncalled for. Puerto Vallarta is amazing. I would just find a different place to go.

Room: 1) There is a leak and all the bath towels are wet…read moredaily, we have to catch the room cleaning person to get new towels daily. The technicians couldn't fix the leak (after 1 hr....I knew he wouldn't bc he looked like he just screwed and unscrewed things all day) so they moved us to another room after 2hrs on a the ground floor and the girl at the reception was so unaware. I'm sure the guy who ran the beach shack for boogie boards would've done a better job of managing guests than the people at the front reception. 2) There is a huge tub in the middle of the room which was completely useless. 3) Bathroom has an unhygienic setting - no vent, glass window / shutter from bathroom to room so people in room can smell your business. Food: we are vegetarian so it was more misses than hits. -Frieda: food was completely flavorless. -Ciao: 1) Caprese: served with HUGE tomatoes and a giant piece of burrata cheese and flavorful balsamic. 2) Bruschetta di Ricotta: same thing as Caprese. 3) Tagliatelle con pesto: no flavor at all, zero salt. 4) Parmigiano Melanzano: too much tomato paste and sugar. The entire dish tastes like sweet sauce. -Zen: Omg this place was a nightmare, the evening we came a kid was crying nonstop so loud the server said I'm sorry I can't do anything. Everything tasted like shit. Soup: white paste with slices of raw red onions and 2 pieces of tofu...wtf is that! Banana Roll Sushi: tasteless with rice that was overcooked and old. Sadly we saw this same item and many others from Zen at the breakfast buffet the next day. That really made it sad to be here. -Marketplace: the food was so limited it was sad. We as vegetarians really survived on Banana Crepes, fruits and omelette station. The Crepe lady made the kids day every day! She was the only gem this place had for food. 1) flu shots and breakfast smoothies are awesome. Drinks are never ending which is nice. Pool near Waterslide was soooo cold; it was uncomfortable to be in the water. The ocean was better. Ocean Rentals: boogie board, Kayaks were amazing. Kids had a blast and the guy who was at the shack was hilarious and so amazing! He got the kids all excited to do stuff and they loved it. This guy also looked like he MC'd the pool dance out which was hilarious and entertaining. Photoshoot: the idiot called us at 9am and told us the sun is in a great spot to take pictures! Sebastian was dumb as hell, but the guy with him who was clearerLY smarter wouldn't take the pictures. Sebastian was completely off putting and looked like he didn't know jack. He wasn't even at the desk (no one was) when we called us the next day at 9am to come look at the pictures! That tells you how professional they are overall. Cafetto: great chocolate ice cream and lattes. I would avoid this resort - the all inclusive package is a boring headache.

If you filtered for All-Inclusive, please note that the price you'll initially see listed is NOT the all-inclusive price. For the fee you see initially listed, only breakfast is provided. This was a misunderstanding when we booked, which ultimately led to us spending as much on food and alcohol as would be the difference to get a much nicer REAL all-inclusive. Even then, the all-inclusive package is comprised of summer camp-adjacent foods and extremely limited drink options. If you speak Spanish, this could be the place for you. However, if you are an English-speaking traveler, prepare to have your access to the already limited facilities complicated or outright blocked by the resounding lack of English-speaking staff. My daughter has high school-level Spanish and had to stammer through indeterminate conversations to make arrangements for as basic services as housekeeping and paying for drinks. Since we did not have the all-inclusive package, we were told that we could order drinks by charging it to our room. This system was not corroborated by the bartenders and was met with great confusion for our first few days. Being visibly the only non-Mexicans at the small hotel, and seemingly the only ones without the all-inclusive package, this led to multiple occasions of us being recognized and our room number loudly announced to confirm we were the ones with this setup. As a group of three women travelling alone, this was extremely disturbing. Even more disturbing, however, was when a tall, lone male bartender came to our room late at night to have me sign off on a drink purchase. We had to spend the rest of our trip living with the knowledge that such a disorganized and expansive demographic of men knew us by sight, and could easily locate where we slept. This was all further exasterbated by the useless formality of a SINGLE lock on the door - not even a chain, and the inability to lock the screen doors to the balcony. Our trip concluded by being kept up into the wee hours as a New Years party NOT FOR GUESTS roared below. The hotel had clearly been rented out to external patrons for this event, and guests were given no warning or discount. All this above, along with lukewarm coffee and zero hot water, it is truly a travesty that this place is listed on Expedia for users in Canada and the States, as you could get better service, deals, food, and basic necessities at a roadside Holiday Inn. We ate there every morning and didn't get too bored. Cons: * Walls seemed pretty thin. I could hear other people using their key cards (just the clicking sound) late at night when I was in my room, and sound of other TVs and chatter in the hall. The people above us seemed to be dragging furniture around frequently which was also noisy. * The property as a whole is pretty dated and needs some renovation. We checked out the Marriott which had nicer pools (infinity pools) and seems much less run down.
