It has been a month since I returned from a trip to wonderful Puerto Vallarta. Even before I left the Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel, I started fashion my review.
Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel is conveniently located by the city's boardwalk, better known as the Malecon. It is small, it is fairly stylish and it does advertise itself in glowing terms.
The hotel design was not unique. The atmosphere was very vanilla. As for attentive service, the phrase I coined during our stay was "consistently, inconsistent".
Check in, went well. The lobby staff didn't seem to care about our arrival; however, the desk staff was nice and efficient. No effort was made to have us arrange a timeshare meeting (and was never pushed on us throughout the week). Our bags were promptly brought to our room.
The king-sized room we had for the week was nice. Not fantastic, not large, not well appointed, just nice. The shower was good, but the water temperature took some time to figure out. The bathroom countertop was very small. The minibar was nice, but not impressive. No hard liquor or wine was available when it came time to be restocked. The plethora of pillows and the comfort of the bed were nice. Our view from the balcony of the room was a definite highlight. I've had larger, more well appointed, rooms at other all-inclusive resorts.
Being small, the hotel offered only three restaurants. Oddly, the semi-casual, sports bar required reservations. The restaurant which seemed to be the fanciest, did not. The casual dining area, open for breakfast and lunch, was closed on several nights during our stay (more to come).
There is a nice sized pool in the center of the courtyard. A smaller, infinity pool, with a swim up bar is located between the main pool and the beach. The swim up pool, featured cold water, and flaking pool tiles. On the sixth day, the infinity pool was finally warm and enjoyable. We experienced no problem getting a lounge chair near the pools or on the one day we sat on the beach.
The beach is a mix of rocks and sand. While walkable, beach shoes are recommended.
The spa is open for sauna and steam room use, with no added charge. If you would like to do either, ask at the front desk. This information will not be volunteered to you.
The food was good, sometimes great. Getting it could be an ordeal. Room service was "consistently, inconsistent". When we ordered a hot meal, it came in twenty five minutes. When we ordered a cold meal, it took over a hour.
Pool service for meals was very good. There's a varied menu and having had just about one of everything during the week, I can say it as a solid menu.
Pool service for drinks and at the swim up bar? Consistently, inconsistent. All booze at the swim a bar was of the rail variety. Not a name brand or top shelf liquor to be found.
The restaurants. Consistently inconsistent. In the one restaurant, were reservations were not required, it took a group of us (10) over two and a half hours to have our meal. It was the excruciating snails pace of our servers. Servers seemed overwhelmed and were definitely not attentive to empty drinks, used plates or the satisfaction of the diners.
Before you ask about complaining to someone, there never seemed to be anyone around who appeared to be in a position of leadership or supervision.
The bars attached to both restaurants were just okay. Although they offered top shelf liquors, they both ran out of product during the week and apparently never made an effort to restock the shelf. If you like a late night drink, forget about it. Bars closed at 10 PM and liquor was stored away before they closed.
The restaurant requiring reservations was the least inconsistent. One night with our large group, the chefs and wait staff hit a grand slam. The next night with the same group, it was a strikeout.
One thing staff was consistent at throughout everyday was putting their tablet in your face, to ensure they were scanning your "all-inclusive" bracelet. It seemed about 90% of the time, this was done to show you your "bill" and to make sure to ask for a tip by credit card or cash. I have never been to an all-inclusive where I was once asked for a tip, little less asked on a regular basis for a tip. While my spouse and I were sure to leave tips, the quality of service and attention we received, never seemed to correlate with the tip.
In summary, this is a resort designed for someone who wants to sit in silence by the pool, read a book, get marginal service, and retire after an okay dinner. I would, and will, go to any number of other all-inclusive resorts instead of returning to this resort. read more
