My husband's insurance company (Atena) contacted him; to tell him, he could have a comprehensive eye exam because he has type two diabetes. The first thing my husband asked was how much was this going to cost us. To which the insurance company said it would not cost us one dime. They helped locate a nearby office, Ocala Eye, who called to make the appointment. My husband asked them directly how much the appointment was going to cost, and was told that it was completely covered. When going in to the office for the appointment, my husband confirmed that the appointment was completely covered. Again, Ocala Eye told him to his face that the appointment was completely covered. Approximately one month after the appointment we received a bill from Ocala Eye for 135.00.
After explaining the situation in a three-way call with both Atena and Ocala Eye. Ocala Eye said they would resubmit with a different billing code. After another month we received a bill for 135.00 with a threatening notation that if they were not paid, they were turning my husband over to a collection agency.
Subsequent calls seem to bring a lack of ability for Ocala Eye and Atena to come to an agreement on which code should be used for this appointment. And Ocala Eye is "confused" as to which billing codes Atena needs to satisfy this bill. (We saved the voicemail informing us that Ocala Eye simply "doesn't know")
This appointment was initiated by Atena and Ocala Eye, with both claiming that the appointment was 100% covered, with no out-of-pocket expense for us. At no time did my husband make additional requests during the visit, nor did he purchase any physical product from Ocala Eye.
Save your time, your money and your sanity by finding a much better place than this. This company will not only mislead you; they will continue to bill you while they are "confused about the correct billing code" and still threaten to report you to a collection agency all at the same time. My next complaint goes to the BBB and the Medicare Fraud and Abuse office. read more
