5 stars isn't enough stars! We adopted a German shepherd mix puppy last fall and started working with a trainer suggested by the rescue. It was apparent that our new puppy was smart, but training wasn't getting us the results we were hoping for. Our puppy was destructive, aggressive during play, having loose stool, jumping all over everyone, pulling hard during walks, and generally felt out of control. Admittedly we weren't prepared for a big dog as we'd only ever had small dogs. I didn't want to waste anymore time because our dog's puppy days were flying by so I found OC Paws and Stacy. Within minutes of our consultation starting, I knew I had made the right choice. Stacy is clearly an expert in animal behavior. She immediately got to work and determined where we had been going wrong and figured out the why's behind some of our puppy's problematic behavior. During our consultation and four training sessions, Stacy helped us with setting boundaries regarding play with our dog that eliminated the aggressive play we had been struggling with. This review is definitely overdue. we really owe Stacey so much to the success of Coco being potty trained. Coco is a 3 1/2 year-old pure breed toy size Yorkshire. I love her to death, but since she's my first dog, I didn't really know how to potty train her Basically she was really just going inside the house and to the my husband stopped having Hope and said I probably need to get rid of her. I am so grateful that I found Stacy thanks to Yelp. The first time I called Stacey very patiently walk me through the registration process to at least have her come over to do it in consultation. I knew that I had wanted to enroll Luna, my miniature schnauzer puppy, in training classes. I had looked at so many places on Yelp and had chosen OC Paws Dog Training. I knew that the puppy class would be really good for her so that she can socialize with other puppies. I think the most beneficial part of the puppy training classes for Luna is working on training around other puppies. She gets very distracted and excited around other dogs. Andrew gives a lot of great advice on how to get her attention even though she is so distracted. I saw a lot of growth and development in Luna every week. In terms of new commands and tricks, I had been training Luna on the basics since I got her, but it really is a whole different story when you're in a new environment with other puppies versus being at home. Luna is an angel at home. Luna gets very excited on our walks and has a habit of barking at other dogs and small children. I had decided to have a private training session with Andrew to work on the issue. We met at a park that Andrew had recommended. It was a perfect park for the issues that Luna and I were having since there were a lot of other people walking their dogs as well as families having picnics throughout the park. The session went much better than expected. Of course, I am still working through the issues with Luna. I don't expect the issue to go away after one private session. I signed up for the intro puppy private training for my maltipoo, Benji, and Andrew did such an amazing job with making sure Benji understood the important commands and also assisted me and my mom with training him on our own. Andrew first asked us questions on what we wanted to work on with Benji (it was mostly the biting on us and our clothes that we wanted to fix) and he asked us about our routine during the day with him. Then, he went over the correct ways to train our pup and what commands to use. It looked so easy when he did it and Benji was such a good boy with listening to him. My mom and I were doing our best to mirror Andrew's training process and Andrew was so patient with making sure we were doing it correctly. In addition, Andrew also went over a few things with helping our Benji boy get used to the outside world and gain some socializing skills. Honestly, we are so glad we signed up for a training class because it makes training a pup more fun when you actually know what you're doing. As of now, Benji is a little bit more obedient after the first session. Hopefully in a week or two, our pup will fully understand the commands without always expecting a treat LOL I will definitely want to sign up for an additional private session in the near future and of course, will want Andrew to help Benji again! We had an evaluation and three follow up lessons with Andrew. We would highly recommend him! He is highly communicative, clear with instructions and the reasoning behind them, and you can tell that he cares about the dogs. He is very knowledgeable about training strategies and uses positive reinforcement. He tailors solutions based on the needs of each dog. The price is also really reasonable, even compared to private lessons at chain pet stores. It's really nice to be able to text Andrew with questions or concerns. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for Susan! I have a one year old miniature Australian shepherd named Koda with severe anxiety issues. Before meeting with Susan I was barely even able to take Koda outside on walks without her pulling the leash or barking at everything from leaves, trash cans, and especially people. After meeting with Susan for 5 sessions I have seem a tremendous improvement with Koda! She really took the time to get to know Koda and tailor our sessions specially towards her needs. Susan not only helped me with Koda's behavior issues but also gave me tools that I can use to help Koda calm down in stressful situations in the future. She also helped me understand more about how dogs think, specifically Australian shepherds, and it's really helped me bond with Koda a lot more. None of this training was an overnight change and it's still a work in progress but Susan really stresses that dogs are easy to train, it's the owners who require the most training, and I agree. I set time aside daily to work on the exercises that Susan has shown me and see improvement every week. The other day I was able to take Koda on a 2 hour hike, we passed at least 30 people, saw at least 10 bikes, and she did not bark once. We reached out to OC Paws Dog for help with leash-reactivity and socialization after trying a local group training for our adopted 2-year old mix. Our dog was adopted from a shelter where he was on 2 different anxiety meds, had hair loss while at the shelter, and engaged in head whipping when staff attempted to bathe, inspect, or treat him. While we learned a few good techniques from another trainer, we felt that the corrections and tools recommended to us were just adding to ours and our dog's stress when encountering other dogs/people during daily, on-leash walks. On the other hand, Stacy at OC Paws guided us in using a different and individualized approach, using mostly positive reinforcement to reducing our dog's reactivity and anxiety. We adopted a mixed breed (primarily American Staffordshire Terrier) dog named Daisy a couple months ago from a shelter in Nevada. She was about 8 months old and we knew nothing about her past. Over the phone, for free, gave me lots of tips on how to start training the puppy in advance of me being a paying client. I picked our puppy up in GA and drove him cross country to CA. I implemented his tips and got a head start on trying my little guy. Upon arriving home with the puppy, we set up appointments with Andrew and he came to our home to work with us and our dog together. Their bad behaviors also became worse when they were together. They were aggressive towards other dogs and barked at everything. They also pulled hard on the leash making walks very difficult and frustrating. Susan taught me the techniques to get my dogs' attention before even leaving the house, have them walk on leash without pulling and barking and make eye contact on command. We also worked on behaviors in the home such as not barking when visitors come over and staying in or out of certain areas of the house. Her method is very gentle but firm. By rewarding positive behaviors and ignoring negative behaviors, I have learned to affect their behavior in a positive way while strengthening my relationship with them.
