Obstinate Lighthouse is a large scale public art piece keeping watch in South Pointe Park at the entrance to the Port of Miami and Biscayne Bay. This art piece is part of the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places. On December 10, 2010, German sculptor Tobias Rehberger and his proposed lighthouse were chosen for the art commission in South Pointe Park. It is the City's 18th art in public places project.
Born on June 2, 1966 in Esslingen, Germany, Rehberger studied with Martin Kippenberger at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Kippenberger has had a large influence on his work in both architecture and design. Rehbergers has had more than 80 solo shows at museums around the world, His art is in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany, and the Serralves Foundation Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal. Rehberger is also a professor at the University of Fine Arts, in Frankfurt, Germany.
The 55 foot tall Obstinate Lighthouse (2011) was inspired by the historical lighthouses that guide ships to safety with their lights at ports of entry. Obstinate Lighthouse however with playful colors is more whimsical. It is made out of aluminum, frosted glass, and LED lights. The lighthouse is made up of 19 staggered parts with a light at the top. About his sculpture Mr. Rehberger has said: "The sculpture is a modern and playful interpretation of a beacon. However, rather than guiding ships, the light functions to greet all city visitors and locals with a choreographed light display that references the lively spirit of Miami Beach." I love light houses and public art and this piece is a lovely joining of the two adding beauty and cultural interest to the park. read more
