YELP defines five stars as "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Hard to believe that anything related to income taxes could qualify for that definition. However, in the case of Kaman Kwok, Inc., it just might be an understatement. If you are one of the fortunate souls [sarcasm alert!!] who gets to file both Canadian and US tax returns and thus gets to deal with both the CRA and the IRS, you know only too well that 2 countries = 3 countries worth of headaches. For twenty five years I prepared my own US taxes. And why not? I had attended one of the top MBA programs and earned an MS in investment management on top of that. When I moved to Canada five years ago, I thought I certainly could handle my combined Canada-US taxes. Wrong! There are times in life when you really do need a specialist. Just because a defenceman blocks a puck in the crease, it doesn't make him a goalie. Fortunately, I found the help I needed. Like many ex-pat Yanks, colleagues referred me to Stephen Katz Ltd, a firm that has been doing cross-border taxes for years. It was there that I was assigned to Ms. Kwok. At first I was disappointed that I was not dealing with Stephen Katz himself, but in time I learned I had actually caught a break. Kaman and her team are highly knowledgable and effective. I've searched a long time for a good cross border accountant and have tried several before Kaman. She saved my butt when my previous accountant made a train wreck out of my returns (and they were a large accounting firm). Kaman is head and shoulders above all of them. She charges a little more than some accountants, but with her you definitely get what you pay for. Their work so far has been rock solid and I trust them. Since I got burned by my previous cross border accountant, I was very cautious before trusting Kaman. I had Kaman's work checked by another cross border accountant who did not know her. The other accountant completely agreed with everything Kaman said. I also had my US accountant speak with Kaman to see what he thought of her US accounting knowledge. Karman is an absolutely an unqualified and unknowledgeable accountant on merely Canadian Tax issue. She gave us wrong and absolutely incorrect advice on Canadian Tax information. The advice sounded awkward on the spot. Luckily the following week her former employer's company called back, and explain to us how Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) handles US citizen in Canada. I called CRA twice with two different agent and verify Karman's advice was completely opposite of truth. And to advertise she is cross border tax specialist who can deal with IRS? Be careful consumer: IRS is more tough than CRA. She spent 1/4 of the time talking about irrelevant non tax related stuff which I was not interested 'at all'. Very dissatisfied with her ability, PR, inexperience and attitude. Poor customer service, before and after. STAY AWAY. Please go to a more qualified firm and check their credential and other professional supports - i.e. tax lawyer or CA credential. read more

Definitely knowledgeable, but very much a talker. Does not spend the time necessary to listen to clients for their needs. Also very expensive ($450/hour) versus $250 an hour for AG Tax or other high-quality tax advisors. Has a very different interpretation of simple and straightforward and what defines the two versus what I am accustomed to. Could not recommend her, particularly relative to AG Tax which was a much better experience. read more

I think she is competent and professional individual but she has a problem with her temper and she is extremely abusive with her words. I have encountered for multiple times when she was yelling at clients/employees/consultants and she was OUT OF HER MIND. It is sometimes frustrating to be a leader and expect everyone to behave as you wish but trying to solve issues with your anger never works. We are living in this modern world where people can express their opinion anonymously. I would be careful if I were you. PEOPLE TALK. I wouldn't chose her as my accountant. Very efficient and no-nonsense approach. Yes, more expensive hourly rate but it takes her a lot fewer hours to complete the task. Took us a while to clean up mess other accountant did but once that was straightened out everything become easy and effortless.
