It was a confusing situation for me and it was made worse when I visited H&R Block on someone's recommendation, where I had a bad experience with a rude official who was rushing me into getting my taxes done with them without clearing some basic questions for me. After that, I decided to go for focused bookkeeping - looking at the (mostly positive) reviews on google and yelp, and I can totally see why there are so many positive reviews. Firstly, the online booking process was great. The best part is - while you book, you can leave a little note explaining your specific situation and what is it you're seeking consultation for, which allows them to be already prepared. The 45-minute appointment was very smooth - Randy not only completed my tax filing process (of two years - 2016 & 2017), but also answered all my questions and cleared all of the confusion I had very patiently. He completed all of that in about 30 minutes but despite that, I did not feel that my appointment was rushed or that I was left was any lingering questions. In fact, it was quite the opposite. I had a note with my questions jotted down - some of which I did not ask, but Randy made an effort to genuinely be interested in a client's situation and cleared all of my questions one by one. Randy is professional, but at the same time - genuine, polite, kind in behaviour, and he really has an in-depth knowledge of the services he offers. Besides, he was pretty clear and concise in communicating the tax filing process - I was able to see him do it step by step on his computer, verifying it with me as he did it. And at the end of the process, he handed me two really well outlined files - one for each year - containing the details of the tax filing. Randy offered to help even for any of my other finance-related matters, and I am most certainly looking forward for further interactions with Focused Bookkeepings because of Randy's professionalism and knowledge. Had I not carefully audited their work myself, our tax returns would have been incorrect by over $5,300. I spent more than 10 hours researching tax rules and identifying mistakes that I had paid a professional to catch. In my experience, the service felt more like data entry than professional tax advice. Important deductions and tax treatments were missed even though the supporting documents had been provided. If your tax situation is straightforward, you may be just as well off preparing your own return using software such as Wealthsimple Tax and saving the preparation fees. If your situation is more complex, I would recommend looking for an experienced tax professional elsewhere. The local franchise declined my request for a refund, and I am still awaiting the outcome of my complaint to Head Office.
