Therefore Shirley Spice is possibly one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to in Shirley, and as an Indian I know what good Indian food tastes like. Here, the food tastes more or less like a proper curry. Even though I've got a sweet tooth, spicy food is lovely too. My personal favourites are the Korma or Madras with Pilau rice and Peshwari nan bread. The atmosphere is nice for a casual meal and/or family night out. The restaurant doesn't get too busy either so there's usually enough room. The bar quenches your thirst at a slightly costly price. Experience has taught it's better to go in the evening than for lunch as the youths come here in the day which can be off putting and possibly a little intimidating. You must be wondering about the menu and prices? I'm won't post the whole menu so here's a rough breakdown. The decently proportione dishes are all typical are traditional. It did so (possibly inadvertently) by eschewing the mantra of curry houses all over the city (and the UK) that when it comes to menus, bigger is better. I've become so used to seeing curry menus with quite literally hundreds of different combinations of sauces, sides, and fillings, that seeing such a relatively small menu at the Karma restaurant immediately drew me in, as I have a general rule that if a restaurant has a small menu, then they will presumably have a lot of experience cooking the same few dishes, and therefore will be able to replicate them at a higher level of quality than a chef who cooks five dishes he's never had to before every single night, and Karma proved my theory right and then some. Their prices are in fitting with the area, with mains generally ranging from around £6.50 - £9 for eat in, and a couple of pounds less for takeaway. The interior appears slightly bare and lacking in character (if you're wanting more in this department, check out the similarly excellent Darjeeling Indian just a few doors down), but don't let that put you off, Karma Restaurant is one of the best of Birmingham's famed curry houses that I've visited.

The prices are very similar to its competitors, around £5-£6 on mains, and they offer 10% off takeaways if you collect them yourself, an incentive that I don't believe the other curry houses in the immediate vicinity offer. Having eaten there and at the Karma several times, I find it very difficult to set them apart. In terms of food price and quality, they're virtually identical, although the Darjeeling has a slightly wider range of dishes, so it may come down to personal preference and if they are able to cater to your wants better than the Karma. I personally prefer the Darjeeling for eating in, as although the Karma is slightly more spacious, the Darjeeling has more character, with decorations and a nice fish tank. Overall, I'd recommend heading down yourself, checking out the respective menus, and seeing which establishment you'd prefer to eat in. Both are fine choices.

Whilst customers are waiting to be seated they can watch the television and read the magazines or newspaper. Access to the bar would be nice but this is still a better offer than most Indian restaurants. They also have a take away service and I think the food is also tasty here and good value for money because the portions are decent and it is inexpensive. The staff are friendly and the food is made quickly; I've waited no longer for my food. On a busy night it can be difficult to sit in to eat a take-away but that's only a minor issue that can easily be resolved.

Although the restaurant seems to be doing well considering its open all hours (or at least whenever I've passed!) and it's usually bustling with diners. However this could be because they're open till late and offer cheap, fast food. I went once but won't be going again.

The absolute best thing about Lahore is that it offers an 'all you can eat' deal for a little over £7 that incorporates all the main dishes plus sundries and naan bread. Drinks are extra, and I can personally recommend the mango lassi as a perfect palate-cooler after you've enjoyed some of the spicy treats on offer. Strongly recommended, it's definitely worth the trip. The only downside is that it can be a little tricky to find somewhere to park. If you can walk it, do so.

The best thing about the Shapla is its food; it is the finest food I have tasted in years and the chef's obviously take pride in what they do. You will be hard pushed to find better Indian/Bengali restaurant in Shirley. I had the Chicken Jalfrezi and the vegetables and meat were fresh and there was plenty of sauce to lap up my naan in. The desert was the sweetest I have ever tasted and I finished every last syrupy spot. The restaurant is perfect for parties, intimate gatherings and special occasions.
