I don't know much about marinas, other than having experienced docking at them when taking boats or…read moreferries occasionally. This one was medium-sized with spaces for around a hundred or so small watercraft, though it appeared less than half full in a weekday afternoon in April. To reach sea level by automotive vehicle the road zigzags down a tuff* rock face, with several hairpin turns and enough road width for one vehicle to head up or down at any given time, so there is certainly zero speeding here. If reaching this by foot, you can also take a public elevator down/up, accessible from Via Ripa Di Cassano on the cliff level and you walk thru a tunnel at the bottom to get to the marina. It's €1 for tourists, €0.50 for locals. (See my separate review for the elevator Ascensore del Mare.) Around the harbor are a handful of restaurants, hotels and marina administration buildings. Also a nice view of some of the tunnels and caves incised into the rock faces near the water. *yellow volcanic stone, though probably tough to maneuver down as well.

Even after stopping at a few other local/regional ports along the Amalfi Coast, arriving to Sorrento the experience differed in a couple aspects. The city sits high on cliffs above the water, and coming here I didn't realize that was the case along the entire coastline, so there's no quick and easy way down or up from the water--you have take a car, bus, elevator or walk up/several flights of outdoor stairs. The long pier extends like a curved arm into the bay, and closer to land a number of ferry, charter boat and tour operators have small ticket offices. Directly west is a small park with views and short walking path along the water, then most of the flat land is a parking lot. South towards town is an elevator that runs up to city level though when I visited in April a couple locals (who saw me walking around looking lost) kindly informed me that it was not in service, and directed me to take a bus stop where public buses* pick up passengers for €2 (cash accepted) for a quick 5 minute drive up to town. That being said, there are still a handful of restaurants and a couple hotels located at water level. And smaller public and private piers nearby used for docking boats, yachts, swimming and fishing. * small mini buses that seat about 10 people.

I was NOT asked to leave my car keys, instead I was given the number to the gate which it made possible for me to open the gate at any time while I parked there. The gate remained open before 8AM-8PM but could be opened by calling the provided number at any time outside that time frame. Gerardo also provided his number in case I ran into any issues. To enter I simply ringed the door bell next to the gate, and Gerardo came to greet me and told me where to park. Highly recommend! Location is convenient and beautiful right along Gerardo's garden.

You can try to find a free parking spot but…read moreyou need to park outside of the city unfortunately and then walk a lot also hoping your car will not get towed or ticketed for any reason. Your only choice is a parking garage or a hotel which might have very few spots available. I went with my family in the middle of August and it cost us 70€ a day to park which is absolutely ridiculous but unfortunately we had no choice. The staff here was very nice and helpful and the car was stored properly without any issues. There are only few parking garages in Positano however this is probably the largest one and most convenient.
