Marameo - Our view from the lounge chairs

Marameo

Our host suggested this place because of the view and food. Neither were a disappointment…read more Although I wish the service was a little better. The pasta was the best we had run into our trip to Italy.

Arriving in Sorrento by boat, I was transfixed with its "beaches". Sitting at the bottom of huge…read morecliffs with the most minimal of shorelines, a series of beach clubs has been built to create beaches. Having never seen or experienced anything like it, I knew that I must. A string of these "beaches" are connected by a common boardwalk. Walk along the boardwalk to determine which beach club is right for you or, if you're not up for swimming and sunbathing while you eat and drink, just figure out where you want to eat and drink. On day one I chose Marameo after trodding the boardwalk checking out each of the other beach clubs. Marameo was the only club with a "barker" out front to engage with but that could draw me in or draw me away. In the end, their offering was what drew me: The piers full of umbrella'd chaises, the stairs from the piers into the sea, and the flotation devices one could climb atop once in the water. What I didn't know was how good the food and drinks would also be. Marameo was great in every regard. Another day I returned to the beaches for lunch only and opted to try a different place despite my having fully enjoyed Marameo. After waiting a while with no service and learning that the people beside me had already been waiting 1 hour, I left. I walked over to Marameo, was promptly seated, and enjoyed a very nice lunch though what you can order from the dining area (fully outdoors) of Marameo is different from what you can order if you've also rented a chaise for the day. All this is to say that were I dining or sunning at the Sorrento beaches I'd opt for Marameo every time. They know what they're doing, do a great job at it, and - for swimming, sunning, dining, and drinking - it's an absolutely fabulous place to spend a day.

It is close to the Sorrento lift and I think most of the beach clubs have similar prices. The sun beds were 13 euro apiece and umbrellas were 6 so it's not cheap, but the food prices were not expensive and everybody enjoyed their lunch. We paid for our Sunday visit on Saturday because they said it would fill up and it did. We chose the outer boardwalk facing the ocean because it seemed the least crowded.

DO NOT EAT HERE! If I could give this place zero stars I would…read more My spouse and I walked by and it looked like a lovely place to have a beer and maybe have lunch. The server asked if it was for drinks or food, not fully having decided we said drinks and food. We sat down and everything was great, we ordered their piazza Bianca a bottle of sparkling water and a beer. Everything was great, until the server asked us if we wanted to order meals. We had looked at the menu and decided that we would have a few drinks and nothing else. The server was upset, he told us we each had to order one meal. And accused us of trying to get free bread and olive oil. He said if I would have known you were only getting drinks I would have told you we are closed! He insisted we must order meals or his manager would be upset. I asked to speak to the manager, as we where not going to eat anything else on the menu. The server kept insisting we order, that we where being rude by not ordering food. I apologized and said we were not hungry and that we would be happy to pay for the bread and olive oil. We told him we where not trying to get anything free, and happy to pay for anything we ate and drank. The manager was never called to our table and we were given the check after much argument from the server. It was the worst experience I have had in a restaurant while traveling abroad. Please, save yourself and argument and the headache. DO NOT STOP HERE!

(Even the uphill walk from the beach was not difficult.) AMBIANCE: 4.0. Outside covered tables. Our table was on the edge next to the water; was very nice to hear the lapping waves and to watch the evening sky turn from pink to black as the sun set. The view is partially blocked by an adjoining wharf on top of which is a restaurant. FOOD: 4.5. Very good food, and a good selection of wines. - Risotto seafood: 5.0. Excellent. - Fish of the day: 4.0. Very nicely prepared and presented. Two gentlemen showed us the fresh fish resting on ice, explaining the qualities of the flesh of each; we shared one fish with fatty white flesh. During the final stage of preparation an older gentlemen separated the meat from the bone within our view, distributing it across two plates. - Salad: 4.5. - Lemon dessert: 4.5 - il polpo (octopus) appetizer: 4.0. - Wine: 4.0. Recommended by our server. We finished with 2 different types of lemoncello. SERVICE: 4.5. The waiter was professional and prompt. He finally smiled when my wife pointed at her plate during one of his visits and insisted with wide eyes: "This is really good!". Eyes sparkling, he replied "I believe you!"

The seafood risotto was recommended by our server but I thought it was too salty and the risotto was very aldente. We ordered fish of the day grilled. The fish had no flavor. The lemon the sauce was the only flavor on the plate. Dessert was ok but also took 20 minutes to arrive. For 300 euros I was expecting way better food and service. Don't waste your money here. Go somewhere else. There was no water view to speak of here. Felt I wasted my money on this experience.
