Frankly all the beaches on the Amalfi coast are limited in size, this being one of the larger swaths where access is free. Beach goers should plan to arrive early to snag a spot in the warm summer months. Other local destinations include grottos or man-made piers, the former which are more secluded and require dedicated transport, though popular enough to get crowded due to their smaller sizes; the latter are often private and reserved for guests of hotel properties, though a handful are public too. On an afternoon in April, around 70s F outside, I'd consider the beach to be moderately busy, not crowded, especially since rain was in the afternoon forecast, and not really warm enough for many swimmers. There's a large section where lounger chairs with sun umbrellas are laid out, which is managed by a private beach club, and chairs need to be rented, which you can do so in advance online. Prices look to be €30-50 per person per day depending on the club. Not cheap! I was content to take a few steps across the edge of the beach since water-related activities weren't in my itinerary for the day. The picturesque, dramatic views of the water and impending storm clouds were enjoyable! That is ...until I got caught in the downpour of that oncoming rain cloud...no fun to be soaking wet, though at least it wasn't hot! PSA: Recommended to bring some type of water shoes or sturdier footwear since the gravelly beaches aren't ones on which to go barefoot.

Then there's a little area of all stones, which amazed me that people set up their towels on. I would hate to lay on that and it was hard to walk on it without shoes. As you approach the water, it slopes down a lot and turns into a slightly coarser sand than the previous sand. Super interesting and something I haven't really seen before. The free area is much larger than I thought it would be and is surrounded by beach clubs with plentiful chairs. The water was so nice and gentle. I can see why it was full, even though it was fairly cold. There are showers and stuff but they are in the middle of the sand, which I thought was weird. You'd think they'd be closer to the sidewalk. Didn't really matter though. The texture of this sand was easy to remove from your skin, even wet.

It was a decent walk down a path to get to the inlet and you have to walk down a pretty steep set of stairs to get down to the water but boy is it worth it! I'd recommend water shoes as the rocks are slick. You can swim around or lounge on rocks. There were probably about a dozen people while we were there in April. There's lots of nearby walking paths full of wildflowers and some ruins. I could have packed a lunch and spent all day here and in the surrounding hiking spots. Arriving in Sorrento by boat, I was transfixed with its "beaches". Sitting at the bottom of huge…read morecliffs with the most minimal of shorelines, a series of beach clubs has been built to create beaches. Having never seen or experienced anything like it, I knew that I must. A string of these "beaches" are connected by a common boardwalk. Walk along the boardwalk to determine which beach club is right for you or, if you're not up for swimming and sunbathing while you eat and drink, just figure out where you want to eat and drink. On day one I chose Marameo after trodding the boardwalk checking out each of the other beach clubs. Marameo was the only club with a "barker" out front to engage with but that could draw me in or draw me away. In the end, their offering was what drew me: The piers full of umbrella'd chaises, the stairs from the piers into the sea, and the flotation devices one could climb atop once in the water. What I didn't know was how good the food and drinks would also be. Marameo was great in every regard. Another day I returned to the beaches for lunch only and opted to try a different place despite my having fully enjoyed Marameo. After waiting a while with no service and learning that the people beside me had already been waiting 1 hour, I left. I walked over to Marameo, was promptly seated, and enjoyed a very nice lunch though what you can order from the dining area (fully outdoors) of Marameo is different from what you can order if you've also rented a chaise for the day. All this is to say that were I dining or sunning at the Sorrento beaches I'd opt for Marameo every time. They know what they're doing, do a great job at it, and - for swimming, sunning, dining, and drinking - it's an absolutely fabulous place to spend a day.

The server kept insisting we order, that we where being rude by not ordering food. I apologized and said we were not hungry and that we would be happy to pay for the bread and olive oil. The water is oh so clear, but with every good, comes with the bad: rocks! And lots of them! Just…read moremake sure you wear flip flops or water shoes because there are pebbles and rocks everywhere. Very limited where you can put your towel down to lay out for a quick tan and remember what I said about rocks? Yea, you'll be laying on it too. Don't worry, there are many others doing the same thing and you get maybe a half inch away from your neighbor. There's a few restaurants, but of course, we're still in Italy, which means they charge a sitting fee. Boo. Capri is such a little town so you can catch a taxi to go into town for more shopping, but the line was so long, I rather lay on rocks than to stand around and hope that my cab gets me back in time before my tour guide leaves me. I booked a tour through my hostel (hostel of the sun) and was able to get on the trip next day! Went to see the blue grotto today and it's nothing like I've ever seen before. Actually, I'm lying. It's exactly what it looks like in the travel magazines you see on the newsstand or airplane magazines! The pictures advertised show that an actually boat is in the cove, but you actually have to swim inside.
