Watching the falls, especially after a rain or when the ice is moving, is dramatic. I like watching the swirling water around the rocks. The park was established by the CCC in 1932. It's located on a strip of land between the Miami-Erie Canal and the Maumee River. Look for the canal locks when you enter the park. I love this park. As a kid we did Girl Scouts here, church picnics and school dates. You can walk along the river and enjoy the fish jumping, birds and fresh air. Get a piece of slate and skip it across the top of the water. There are picnic tables and a few grills. Take a blanket and relax in the grass. Newer playgrounds and restrooms are along the long road. At the far end of the road is a primitive campground.

Trails are numerous. Can never get bored since they change so much with the seasons. Been coming here since I was a child. I hope Toledo Metroparks will continue to attend to the peaceful nature aspects of the parks, and not too much on the commercial "Amusements". Although they are not native to Oak Openings region, save some of the pine forests please. Some species still need and enjoy them. (Like me!) A suggestion... Add a few more benches (log ones even) along the many trails for us old folks to rest and listen to the peaceful forest. A Zen moment. Om. Namaste.

Harrison Lake State Park was a great place for our family to get together for a reunion. We had a…read moregreat time visiting every playground at the park (there are 6!). Each had its merits, but the group vote for the favorite was the playground across from the volleyball and basketball courts. Some of the playgrounds had retro equipment, which we liked, but the seats were very low and sometimes squeaky. The climbers and bouncers were a hit and the young ones raced to be the first to try them. We even awarded special stickers to anyone in our group who visited all six playgrounds. Finding the geocache and hiking the trails, playing disc golf, doing archery---it was all a great time!

A bridge provides access to a little island with a beach, which also has nearby swings and picnic tables. We saw a number of boats out enjoying the water and folks doing some fishing. Camping sites are available, as is a dog beach.

But the kids had fun and had no issue at full speed. There is also a splash pad about 100ft away. The beach sits in a nice curved area at the western end of Lake Erie, and it is surrounded by small homes and wooded views in the distance. The large swimming area is marked off and has a gentle slope for wading in. The lighthouse is right on the shore and has restrooms and an outside shower. The pier is actually a concrete walkway with a crescent shape that is pleasant to explore. The only negative was the smelly trash cans near the restrooms...dead fish smell in that area only.
