We love Oakwood Academy (preschool). Our son joined in October of 2025 as a 2.5 year old. The school is very clean and organized with processes that support safety, stability and care for the kids. My son has already learned so much in less than 6 months. I love that they post the lesson plan so you can reinforce the learning at home. There is a lot of communication through the Class Dojo app and postings at school. He also was potty trained fully in 2 months which I was more than happy to pay the extra $25-30 a week for that guidance. They have fun activities like field trips, Christmas recitals, special guests like firemen, dentists, etc. He LOVES his teachers, Ms. Cynthia and Ms. Khalifa and we do too! They really understand each child and their personality nuances. I can share what is happening at home and they help guide and reinforce behavior changes at school. My daughter started coming here in September of 2021 as a 2 year old. Weeks of her attending Oakwood Academy I started noticing a significant difference in how she reacted to emotions. I was able to tell since infancy that she was hot tempered but Oakwood Academy and Ms. Cynthia have supported her in understanding what her emotions meant and how to use her words. This school has definitely encouraged emotion management and my child is able to express compassion, excitement, sadness and anger in a controlled manner. I know this school makes learning enjoyable to the students as my toddler wants to attend school on the weekends too. Another amazing trait my child is showing is responsibility and independence. She is eager to support around the house and is always being helpful. As the weeks go by, I can see how she manages to take care of her toys a bit better. She is also taking responsibility for her actions and letting me know when she did something wrong and apologizes for it on her own. I am comfortable dropping off my daughter every morning as I know she will be cared for and I have left her in a loving and safe environment. My daughter raves about her teacher Ms. Cynthia every second she gets about how nice and amazing she is. The staff reaches out and communicates clearly. I love their monthly newsletter and always have information posted for all parents to see. Ms. Ana has been wonderful since day one with me and my child. We are so disappointed that we had to pull our kiddos out when we moved away!! Oakwood Academy is such a great school and I miss our kids going here dearly! The teachers are all great and very attentive and our kids learned SO much while they were there. Our barely 3YO was only able to spend about 6 months there before we left, but while we were there, she built so much confidence and learned so much from Ms. Tana, Ms. Jessie, and Ms. Noemi! Ms. Noemi, Ms. Jessie, and Ms. Rosa were my other kiddo's teachers and they're all so great! This school tries to get parents involved in various activities and our kids really enjoyed all the parties that the school threw. Both of our sons went here- and one of them graduated from kindergarten here. The pros: Most of the teachers are good. The toddler class teachers as very nice and really good at potty training. The kinder teacher, Ms. Antoinette, was amazing and really impressed us with our oldest. The campus is big and the classrooms are spacious. The hours are great which is a benefit with most private schools. Opportunities for extracurricular activities are pretty vast. Cons: Our experience is pre covid, so I can't speak on if there's improvement. The toddler class was always pretty filthy and my kids were sick pretty often (a couple times with really bad viruses). I don't think it was sanitized or cleaned enough. You have to pay $25 a week if your child is not potty trained by 2. I think 3 years old would be more fair, but it's clearly a money grab. Ms. Ana was very nice until she became director. Her attitude was mean and impatient as soon as she got the promotion. Ms. Jennifer on the elementary school side is typically in a horrible mood and doesn't really care how rude she comes off to parents when speaking to you. Our youngest was diagnosed with autism after we left the school, at which we didn't return after summer only because Ms. Ana refused to have him enrolled the following year. It was a blessing in disguise because we got him into an awesome school, but it was quite frankly very mean in the way she flat out rejected my child. There was never any issues of behavior, but I can tell she did not want him back because he was clearly "different" and had a hard time potty training. This is the worst daycare ever went to. I don't believe half the teachers who work there even like kids. My daughter went her for 3 months back in 2019. At the time, I didn't know she was on the spectrum. She became so depressed why attending this school because of the constant picking by the director. They told me she picked up a chair and thew it. My daughter told me she was pushed off the chair by another student. She begged me to stay home the next day because they don't like me. She asked if something was wrong with her. The next day when I dropped her off, I asked my daughter to lift the chair and she couldn't. Needless to say, that was her last day. This is the only school my child has been accused of acting out violently. She's seven now and that's still true. I'm so glad I got her out of there before they changed her. We brought our son to Oakwood as soon as he turned 2. The school helped potty train him, speak full sentences using expressive language, and count to 10 all before his 3rd birthday. He knows all the shapes and colors that are appropriate for his age. Additionally, he can identify many letters and sounds. While all that is wonderful, and necessary for his academic success, that fact that I can drop him off and he runs to class, hugging the staff and his classmates, reassures me that he feels comfortable. My daughter has 3 years coming to this school and she loves it! Currently, my 2 yr old son has started this month and is transitioning better than I imagined. The staff here are truly wonderful and I am beyond grateful of their care for my kids! From Ms Kalifah, Jessica, LuLu that help potty train and transition into a school setting to currently, Ms Rosa teaching pre-K. Also, Ms Ana has been very considerate and approachable with special concerns. My wife and I are so happy with our decision to enroll both of our daughters at Oakwood Academy. We have a 5yr old and a 4yr olds that both started at Oakwood at 2yrs old. The academic development is second to none. Our 5yr old is reading at a 1st/2nd grade level in Kindergarten. Our 4yr old's vocabulary if proliferating by the day. Additionally, the school does a great job teaching manners and responsibility. During the pandemic, this school did a phenomenal job of implementing protocols and procedures to mitigate covid spread and at the same time keep school open throughout the ENTIRE pandemic. In three years I have not seen one teacher on their phone! Every single teacher/administrator that we have worked with is absolutely first class. We have an extra special place in our hearts for the teachers below: Ms. Jessica, Ms. Kalifa, Ms. Jacinia, Ms. Noemi, Ms. Antoinette and Ms. Fatima. However, even other teachers who have not taught our girls such as Ms. Maria, have shown both of our daughters extra love in daily intercations. Ms. Ana and Ms. Jennifer are fantastic administrations for the Pre K and Elementary schools. Communication is constant and very clear. Each decision made is well thought out and made with all key stakeholders in mind. We were very picky in choosing the school for our daughters. We visited over 11 different schools in the area and Oakwood was the obvious choice from day one. We are so content with this important decision we made for our girls. read more

My daughter started at Oakwood when she turned 2 (We just started our 3rd year) and even though we had a tough time transitioning in, the routines and procedures provided my daughter with safety, stability, and a nurturing learning environment. Every staff member we have encountered is caring and kind (even the janitor is super kind!). The school year is sprinkled with special surprises and celebrations to share with parents. I love it! And, they answer my questions in a timely manner and communication is always open and honest. They've been the biggest support during the pandemic and have implemented all precautions to keep my precious child safe and healthy. Two of my children started attending Oakwood Preschool in January 2020. We love the teachers there! They are attentive and nurture our children's personality. My oldest is now in kindergarten but returns for the holidays and summer break programs they offer. We have also now drilled our youngest shortly after he turned 2. Our kids come home raving about their teachers. They offer potty training which was very helpful for our littlest one. the Preschool have an app they use called ClassDojo that keeps you informed and makes it easy to reach out to your child's teachers. They have done a great job navigating some difficult circumstances with COvid. They have found ways to continue to enjoy previous activities with modifications to allow the children to experience them safely. We are so glad we found a place at Oakwood as changing schools when you have 3 kids isn't ideal. The kids are happ and so is this mommy. read more

My son and daughter have attended OAS for 3 years and have developed academically and socially. This school is more than that but a warm 2nd home for my kids. The teachers are amazing and loving towards all the kids that attend. I have never had any concerns dropping off my kids here. I have been associated with oakwood academy schools for many years now. They work hard to keep a strong curriculum that pushes kids to do their best. They teach Spanish and have bible class monthly. The summer programs also offer field trips and splash days which are always exciting for the little ones. Some of my favorite things are the healthy food options they offer for kids, the low children to staff ratio, and the long business hours 6am-6pm. None of this would be found in a public school setting! The things I would change are parking availability. I also would like bible class to be more frequent. Other than that, the staff works hard and the administrators are willing to work with you to do the best for their child. I will definitely send my kids through their programs. read more

It's been a long time. My son attended Oakwood from K - 4th grade (2004 - 2008). Ms. Jennifer, Ms. Teresa, Ms. Anroinette, and a couple others whose names I have forgotten because it was so long ago - they were the best thing for us and exactly what he needed. What I have not forgotten is their dedication to academics. My son was challenged and he excelled. In his 5th grade year, he was GATE tested in our school district, and he was prepared and excelled through the GATE program as well. Next month he will graduate from high school, and in the Fall he will begin his new journey in one of the eight Ivy League universities. Oakwood Academy is an amazing preschool. Oakwood has amazing staff and they embody a growth mindset. My daughter has attended Oakwood since the age of 2 and each of her teachers are nurturing, caring, professional and experienced. The teachers really helped My daughter get potty trained, her first day attending the school she didn't even cry. My daughter is excited to go to school each and every day. Ms. Ana, the director is TOP Notch, she knows most parents and practically all students by name. Ms. Ana engages with the parents, communicates clearly and keeps me informed at all times. With COVID, we were unable to go into the classrooms out of precaution and the teacher and Ms. Ana sends pictures and updates about my daughters day and that makes me feel at ease. Ms. Ana let's me look at the cameras at anytime also. Ms. Ana and all the teachers respond to my inquiries or communication promptly. The school offers opportunities for extracurricular activities like dance, gymnastics, and even Bible club. The school celebrates nearly every holiday so always fun activities for my daughter to participate in. My daughters teachers Ms. Lulu, Ms. Cynthia, and Ms. Rosa have been phenomenal. Communication is on point. Often times. My daughter engages with other teachers on site and she always speaks positively about all of her encounters. My daughter learned to spell and write her first and last name, recognize all her letters and numbers 1-100, read sight words, and so much more. Ms. Ana posts the lessons for the week so parents know what is covered daily and also helps with reinforcing learning at home as well as helping my daughter make connections and communicate what she learns everyday on the way home from school. My daughter just finished the summer session at Oakwood Academy Preschool. Miss Jessica and Miss Khalifa are fantastic and we are incredibly grateful to them. My daughter had a really rough time adjusting to the transitions that are part of the structure at Oakwood and ultimately she wasn't ready for starting the regular session this fall. But, throughout her time at Oakwood, all of the teachers and director were incredibly patient with her and encouraging. They communicated with us to let us know her progress and where she needed growth. They really formed a bond with her in a short period of time and we were never in doubt that they cared about her and wanted her to succeed. I would absolutely recommend Oakwood to anybody, not just for the care they provide, but for the exceptional communication. My daughters started back in October 2020. I have 2 friends who also has their kids in this school. They talk very highly about how awesome all the teachers and staff members are. She had recommended me to see Ms. Ana. When I first met Ms Ana she was sweet and welcoming. She made me feel comfortable. Ms. Maria is so nice and funny. Both my daughters also talk highly of their teachers. Ms. Cynthia and Ms. Noemi. I've seen big improvements in both my girls. My oldest daughter within a few months already knew how to write her name, identify all her letters, shapes and colors. She even knew addition which was very impressive. That really prepared her for kindergarten. My youngest daughter is now going through the same thing. When my youngest daughter started she wasn't fully potty trained. I was very happy with our daughter's development at this school... in the beginning. Unfortunately, the little things that were bothersome started piling up to big things. First, the director at this location is horrendous. Not only does she try to talk down to parents as if they themselves are children, but she rolls her eyes at parents when they say goodbye to their child. She goes out of her way to create a toxic environment not only for the teachers at the school, but the children. My daughter was terrified of her and would tell me stories of her pointing at her. I knew something was wrong when I escorted her into her classroom later than I usually did and my daughter froze in fear when she saw that the director was also in the room. How long has this been going on? Second, the mandatory potty-training at two years of age, no matter if the child is ready, is ridiculous. Every child is different and will achieve potty readiness at a different stage and age. Why make every single two year old child wear training pants, regardless of development? I know why. Money. On top of the monthly tuition, they charge $25.00/week for potty-training. At first, it was presented as optional, but when I was told that she was not allowed to wear a diaper to school, it certainly wasn't optional. That's an extra $100.00 a month, sometimes more (depending on how many weeks there are in a month), and that doesn't include the extra cost incurred for washing out clothing and potty training pants every day. Third, when I would pick up my daughter in the late afternoon, I wanted to know how she was doing, but the only answer I ever got was "I don't know" or "I'm not sure." It got to the point where I stopped asking. There is zero communication between the teachers in the morning and the teachers in the afternoon. And, going back to my previous statement about potty-training: if I wanted to know if my daughter pooped that day, I had to walk all the way to the other building in the back of the school that housed the potty training log to see if she actually went or not. If this ratio at this school is 12-1, how difficult would it be for the teacher to write up a small note to the parents every day about their child's development? Fourth, if your child picks up bad habits from other students and is labeled a "problem child," they will do everything in their power to see to it that your child is written up constantly, to the point that you leave on your own or they threaten to kick your child out. My daughter was picked on by two other OLDER students in her class and as far as I could tell, nothing was done about the other children pinching, pushing, kicking, and hitting her. My daughter has been taught to tell an adult if someone bothers her, but instead she started to retaliate on her own. Why? Because nobody seemed to notice that she was being hit first. When she finally did report that she was hit first, the teachers didn't believe her, since it was after the fact. Ugh. I'm so glad I removed my daughter from this school. It made me sad to take her out because I really liked it at the beginning, but the toxic environment the director has created there is not a place I want my child to be in. I thought this was supposed to be a private Christian school? What kind of Christian values are they teaching these kids when the staff purposely teases the children just to get a reaction out of the child and then laugh a the reaction? Or, how about the director telling my daughter that she's mean? Maybe the director should evaluate her own actions. read more

Where do I start? My child transferred to Oakwood Academy Elementary after completing the Jumpstart PreK program at their sister school, Creative Day Academy in Bellflower. My son loves coming to school. Every morning, we are greeted by a friendly staff member, that make us feel so welcome. The teachers are very knowledgeable and flexible with my son's needs. Anytime I have questions, Ms. Jennifer is so helpful and goes out of her way to accommodate me. The class sizes are small and I love that every teacher and staff person knows my son's name. It's taken me way too long to write a review of this fantastic facility! My daughter went to Oakwood for a couple years prior to starting kindergarten. Not only is the facility exceptionally clean and organized, staff is friendly, and facility is safe; they did exceptionally well in preparing my daughter for kindergarten. My daughter showed a love for reading at a very early age and her teacher saw this and had her reading in preschool! She is now in 1st grade and reading at a 3rd grade level! If we hadn't moved out of Long Beach I would've put her in the elementary program which my older daughter participated in over summer (and learned guitar!!). Fantastic experience as well! As a working mother it was hard for me to leave my daughter with out a level of guilt, but at Oakwood I felt confident that I was putting her in a wonderful program with caring, loving teachers, positive educational environment and fun and safe! My 2.5 year son attends Oaktree Preschool in Long Beach. I'm extremely happy with his with his teacher Ms Francis and the great team (Ms Gilmore, Ms Erica) that make me feel really comfortable as a parent. I also have a 19yr daughter whom attended Page Private School in Hankcock Park for many years, so I'm really particular at the overall development process. She started school at 3 yrs old, and my son is already ahead of her at 2.5 yrs. The entire staff at Oakwood academy do such a great job working with the the students. They are kind, patient, and dedicated. Often times going above and beyond to give students extra one on one time, if they see students struggling with class work or falling behind. My daughter is a 2 1/2 yrs old and started about 3 months ago. I was very sketical about putting her into preschool so young and especially because she wasn't potty trained yet and they said she had to be. Potty training has been great and she's almost finished and fully potty trained. She loves getting up and going to school every morning and her communication skills have florished. She comes home singing new songs every day and has been saying a lot of new words and even sentences. My daughter attended Oakwood Academy since she just turned 2 years old until 3.5 year when we sadly moved out of state. We loved Oakwood and the warm, caring teachers in Building B (Ms Khalifa, Ms Lulu, Ms Jacinia, and Ms Jessica) but didn't fully realize how wonderful Oakwood was until we moved to a new state and a new school. Not only are the teachers genuinely loving and dedicated, the school organized many events to create a sense of community. We miss the little events around Mother's Day, Father's Day, and the big event around the holidays. My daughter started as a shy 2 year old who barely spoke, but soon she was saying "Yes, please" and "Thank you" and bloomed into a playful and sociable student. My daughter started attending preschool at Oakwood Academy at 2 1/2. Their potty training process helped her so much! Ms. Jessica and Ms. Califa always gave my girl so much attention. The preschool is clean and has lots of activities for the students. We are not religious and the administration were accommodating in our request for our daughter not to attend the Friday bible studies. Our son has been at Oakwood Academy since 2019 and we love it. Our middle son also attended Oakwood Academy back in 2008 so we are familiar with the school curriculum. We love it because the teachers are all amazing and patient, the class sizes are not too big (~15 kids), and the facilities are clean. I love that they also provide a hot lunch and snacks during the day... potty training was also a plus! The school is closed off and you need a code to enter which makes me feel better in regards to safety. Ms. Noemi is our current teacher and she is great with our son. He has been learning so much from her and his previous teacher, Ms. Jacinia. We love Oakwood and would even consider keeping him here for Kindergarten. They also have a fun summer program for the kids which includes a few field trips. Extra-curricular? They have it too! I wanted to wait until my son was enrolled at a new school to write this review. When my son started at OA I was so excited, it was his first "big boy" school and he was just as excited! A couple weeks into the school year I began to see that my excitement was turning into more of a concern. A few weeks went by and I began to get phone calls from Ms. Rosa while at work starting with twice a week then turning into 3-4 times a week, about my child's behavior. First starting with disruptive behavior, then not getting along with other students and finally inappropriate language. Now I know my child may have energy (like I'm sure every 4 year old boy does), I also know that he is a very loving boy and does not pick fights NOR speak inappropriately. My concern with this academy was not the phone calls but the lack of enthusiasm to try and help develop my child as I think teachers and schools should. It was as if they felt like he was a problem child and wrote him off there after, which saddened me the most. It became evident in each teachers energy that they no longer wanted my son in this academy. 4 years old is such a tender age, so you would have to understand my disbelief when I was called at work to be told he was now being kicked out of the academy. I get a call saying my child was being kicked out for inappropriate language. Ms. Ana called me and said my son told another kid to "suck my balls" I was SHOCKED, not only does my kid NEVER speak like this but neither does ANYBODY around him and I am 100% sure of this. Immediately I went to pick up my son, embarrassed is an UNDERSTATEMENT. I take my son to a near by area right outside the school to speak with him, I asked him how his day was and he tells me he got in trouble, I ask him why and he says because he told another student "suck my BULL" immediately I knew that 1. He didn't understand the context that he said it 2. Did he realize this was a inappropriate thing to say. I then asked him to repeat himself, again saying "BULL" and not balls (mind you, still to this day does not know what balls are). I asked him what it meant, he said "it's the animal mom". I then asked where he learned this from, he let me know that it was something he learned from a classmate. It all made sense now, my son hadn't known what he was even saying and neither Ms. Rosa nor Ms. Ana cared to investigate the situation properly, all they seemed to care about was getting him removed from the school! I called the school to see how the situation was investigated and to see if my son was interacting with the student he said he learned the language from, and was told that in fact they were working together that day!! After telling Ms. Ana this her response was "that student has been with us for a while now and would never speak like that" I was shocked again. It was that moment that assured me that I didn't even want my child in an environment that would so easily place the blame on him but NEVER would think it was possible to be language learned from another student. Like I stated in the beginning, I wanted to wait until my child was enrolled at a new academy for a couple weeks prior to writing this review. He has been at this new school for a month now and has received such praise from his new teachers and peers, yes he's a ball of energy that finds happiness in being the teachers "helper" but we've found an academy that appreciates that vs. scolding that. I see tons of positive reviews here and I myself wish I could post something positive but unfortunately for us our experience wasn't as great. Side note: Ms. Kathleen who works in the office is very monotone, which sometimes comes off as rude. I hope this helps read more

Both of my sons attended Oakwood Academy my children are African-American young males I would not recommend this school for black children. They were unable to address adjustment issues that my three-year-old was having. They were not patient and after only three incidents kicked my son out of the school. Their was a pattern of them kicking black children out of the school unable and unwilling to train their staff on how to deal with the unique challenges and strengths of little black children. They only wanted quite meek children in the program and refused to accept any responsibility on their part for a lack of training of their staff. The staff are all Latino women with one African American teacher therefore the lack of representation at this school contributed to their deficiencies!! The bathrooms stayed dirty as well. If you are a black parent raising black children find another school!!! read more

My daughter has attended Oakwood Academy for the last 2 years now and just turned 4 this past September. Overall I think it's a fantastic school. From the academic program to the extra curricular activities. My daughter is truly thriving. I'd recommend this school to anyone in a heartbeat. Two of my favorite teachers Ms. Jacina and Ms. Lulu have made these last two years such an exciting learning experience for my sweet pea. They're always so kind/nurturing and I just couldn't ask for a better school. However, the school administrator Mr. Cooper lacks a lot to be desired. Today was the first time I've ever had to speak with him and honestly I hope it's the last. I was very taken back by how demeaning he was with me. He spoke so loudly that any parent dropping their child off or staff could hear every bit of our conversation which was supposed to be private/confidential as I was discussing my tuition payments, etc. Mr. Cooper's aggressive tone with me was so uncalled for. I understand he was trying to get a point across but there is always a way to speak to someone without making them feel belittled and humiliated. If I had met him when I first came to OAC I don't I would have made the decision to put my daughter in this school. That's just how bad my impression is of him after leaving there this morning. With his overall lack of compassion and searing demeanor and hope my daughter never has to meet him either. I really only deal with Ms. Kathy the schools director. I'd like to keep it that way going forward. (lol) I've had my differences with Ms. Kathy but we've worked through them and she's much more understanding and compassionate when it comes to any of my concerns. read more

I have had an amazing experience at this school. After touring 9 different preschools and Montessori I decided to go with oakwood academy. My daughter loved this place and wanted to be in school even on weekends. The director Ms Cathy was very welcoming with a bright smile every morning. Ms Ana and the teachers were always ready to help. This preschool is mostly play based. All of my concerns were addressed right away and followed up with me by the teachers. I have had zero complaints and would highly recommend this preschool as a stepping stone for every child. read more

I love Oakwood Academy! I have 2 kids who attend the preschool and they love their school! As an African American parent, it was important to my husband and I that our kids attend school in a diverse community. When I was looking for a school for them, I called Oakwood and asked about the school demographics because multiculturalism is important to our family. The school was very forthcoming with this information and assured me that cultural diversity was an important part of the curriculum. From that moment, I knew this was the right school for us! It has been 2 years and we have had a great experience here. Ms. Kahlifa is an amazing teacher! She works so well with all the children. I had an opportunity to observe her leading a school ceremony/celebration and she is an awesome example for all of the kids on how to lead a group and speak and communicate well with others! She also potty trained my son, and she was encouraging and kind to him during this process. I always felt comfortable, and he was always sent home clean and well taken care of. He is doing a great job now in this area and I owe it all to Ms. Kahlifa! Ms. Jessica was also my son's teacher and she had a classroom of all boys last year. She worked so well with them to make sure they were well behaved and learning in different styles. I loved that she played cultural music from Motown to get the kids dancing and engaged. I also noticed that my son developed a passion for learning in her class and the ability to focus on projects and complete tasks like putting puzzles together, coloring in the lines, etc. My son is now in Ms. Jacinia's class and he loves coming to school even more now! Ms. Jacinia taught my son and daughter. My daughter grew so quickly in her class. She has great communication skills and she is very inquisitive :) Ms. Jacinia has always encouraged her to develop these skills. My son used to be very quiet coming behind his sister, but now that he is in Ms. Jacinia's class he has been talking so much more as well! I am so grateful for this school. The director, Ms. Ana, knows all of the kids names, she is working so hard to keep all of the children safe during this pandemic and she deserves to be recognized for her efforts. My grandsons go there and they love it! The youngest just started and he is so happy!
