My Name is Marlin Paul Jack. Class of 1969
I was heavy into the R.O.T.C. program. A Captain in my senior year. Commander of the 3rd period B Company. Captain/Commander of the OAL Rifleteam, Champions. I also trained and commanded the First Place 'Competition Platoon', taken at the Annual All City (6 Schools) ROTC Competition, held at the Oakland Coliseum, May 28th 1969. 29 Cadets...we were the first 'Show' onto the 'Floor'. We 'Owned that Floor', the Best there IS, Was, or Ever Will Be!! We were awarded the Trophy, engraved- 'Competition Platoon 1st Place 1969'. I would like that trophy given to me, as it Belongs to me, along with the Drillteam guidon (a small flag on a aluminum bar) that reads 'TECH HIGH', that I created in machine shop.(is the Amory Building Still There??) In our routine, Leaping, I threw the Guidon Up High into the air...missing the Central Score Board by only One Inch, I was later told that they had just raised that display up, beforehand. Blinded by the overhead lights, and by divine help, I did Not drop it, catching it. My point here is...in 'their' taking of power over Tech High, and eliminating the ROTC Program and erasing the Decades of History, Is a Travesty to all the Graduating Officers who put in the Hard Work to train the future Leaders of America. At 17, I graduated, started courses at Laney JC. Quit my mondain after school job, then withdrew from college, and Volunteered into the US ARMY, as did many other cadets. Yes, some were Drafted. After basic at Ft Lewis, I graduated from the army school of 'Rotary-wing Aircraft maintenance and repairs' Ft. Eustis VA, with rank as a Sp-E4 Crewchief. Sent to Vietnam, crewed Hueys, Cobras, and Chinooks. On the Chinooks, we performed missions into Vietnam, Cambodia and even Laos. We Resupplied in the field, evacuated the wounded, rescued Shot down pilots and we took food to and Fed Starving Villages and Children. I was shot down 3 times and was wounded.
You can 'Hang' Your Life on a Vietnam Veteran! "Fly-Boys never let you down!" Honour Duty Country. Honour All Veterans. NOW, put our history back on Display!! And give Me My Trophy! Marching Off the Competition Floor in 1969, My Brother, a recently returning Medic, back from Vietnam, in the stands with our Mother, and he was also a Officer in Techs' ROTC (class of '67 and Drafted at age 20), yells out..."They Can't Be Touched", and for the rest of the Evening, We Weren't! Thank You! Marlin
