I would rate this place a 10/10 because there are great teachers in 6th grade and 7 and 8th grade this was my first year at Montrera. It was amazing I felt included in all my classes and there are great electives like leader ship and exploratory science and art their is also computer science and Spanish and black girl brilliance and a lot more. There are good sports like basketball volleyball flag football and a whole lot more there or a bunch of great clubs. The teachers make you feel welcomed and they build a bond with students they teach you all kinds of skills for when you're older. There's all kinds of things to do there even if you don't like sports. I used to not like school but I love it now it's a great school I would say. My mom went there so did my dad and grandma so it's a very special place. It's an amazing place to go I feel like I love it here. I know this place so well I have great memories of just 6th grade I can't wait to go to 7th and make some more memories. You can make all kinds of memories and friendships here read more

Please take head to what I'm about to say... if you have a child in special education DO NOT take your child here. We took our daughter here and it has been the absolute worst experience we've ever seen. I can't give all the details but I will say ms. Liao is a terrible teacher. The principal as well as the office administration are the most unsupportive, disrespectful & untrustworthy messy group of "adults" I've ever seen in my life. It's like the school is being ran by a bunch of gossiping teenagers. Our daughter, as well as her classmates were assaulted and singled out by not all, but most of the staff in her classroom. They don't give the kids real work, they sit around and slack off and gossip all day. Some of their classroom aids are LAZY and BIAS. They play favorites and will make you regret ever bringing your child to that school. God forbid you actually try to report them too, they definitely make your life miserable. They don't try to from a relationship with any of the students, they don't have any engaging toys are activities for the kids and their curriculum are WELL below those kids abilities. They just slack off doing their best to coast through the days until they get there next check. They hate accountability. They hate parents who stand up for their kids and they hate anyone who has a voice other than them. Please listen to me...your kids will regress, they will not learn anything and you will be wasting your time. They administration can BARELY control the regular students; they don't attempt to control the special education classroom AT ALL. No one properly responds to reports, email or phone calls. If it's not in their interest good luck getting a return call. Meeting are pointless also and you'll leave feeling it was a waste of time. The special education teacher seems like she hates her job and the kids she has to oversee and when it's convenient will pull the victim card and make you seem like something you're not when you speak out against them. My experience was ok. They have an A day, B day schedule which was interesting compared to other middle schools. But on Wensday if you have health or P.E you do a mile run, which is dumb, idk why on a Wensday though. But the school is normal, fights, drills, learning, kid getting suspended, late kids, after school kids, athletes, and injuries. Montera also dose sports rally's. (Not all middle schools do prep rally's or sports rally's). read more

I came to Montera for the Tour for today at Montera Middle School (November 5th, 2023) It made me and my mom's friend's family and another family think it's pretty rude the fact that they scammed us, no one picked up the phone nor ousd office and Montera's parking lot was just closed right there and nothings opened. I went there at 8:30pm and everything seemed right until no one came up (opened the door, or even email us) I feel like they changed the date bc they made a mistake or it's bc only 3 families signed up for this. Montera is one of the "better" middle schools in OUSD in that there is a higher number of children there whose families can afford to fill in the gaps with their own time and money. Still, most families cannot spend enough money or time to ensure that their children get their educational needs met while they are at Montera. I'm not saying that it's the fault of Montera teachers or even the front-line administrators that the distance learning of the 2020-21 school year was so ineffective for so many students and families, but the students definitely got behind and discouraged during that 1+ year. My eighth grade student is now without a Math class or Math teacher since the beginning of this school year. While students who are (or were before COVID) on grade level in math have no teacher at Montera since the beginning of the school year, the students in accelerated Math/early Algebra do have a Math teacher. This is a serious equity issue. My child's class is not the only one without a teacher and this is not the only year this problem has affected my chid and other Montera students. Math teachers are hard to come by but we all must recognize that a significant raise in pay for all OUSD teachers could go a long in the recruitment and retention of sought-after Math teachers and teachers of other hard-to-come-by subjects. I have worked at Montera Middle School for over four years now. I am an Intervention Specialist in an Inclusion program for students with special needs. Since it is inclusion, I am in 5 general education classes a day including a workshop class with the special education teacher. I have to say that a majority of the teachers are amazing. Of course there are a few which are less than perfect, but the Montera community and family is one that has always been welcoming and warm. I have seen two principals come through, but Montera's morale has stayed strong. It is in a beautiful neighborhood with lots of trees and great students. It is open enrollment, so after the kids of the neighborhood get first pick, students from all over Oakland have the opportunity to come to Montera. They have the support of AC transit with over 10 buses from all over Oakland both pick up and drop students off, ensuring safe transportation. I love Montera and hope to teach there some day after completing my credential program! I do wish OUSD would pay teachers better, but alas things are not as great for teachers in Oakland as other neighboring cities... read more

I honesty don't know where to begin with this school. If you've spoken with parents and kids over the past say, 5 to 10 years that we're a part of this school community, the answer is always the same: "some years were good and some years were bad" This place is a roller coaster with not a lot of consistency in a host of areas. Bottom line, tour the place and talk to all the teachers and staff. If within the first month you see things going sideways with classes, major disciplinary problems with other kids, or your child is just not happy, pull them out. There are other choices. I'm extremely happy we will be moving on. My child has seen a lot, put up with a lot, and has fortunately taken advantage of what this school offered and was content overall. However... he's been wanting to get to high school ASAP! I will say this, counselors are some of your best advocates at this school for you and your child. If you don't communicate and stay ahead of all the online learning, you and your child will be lost in the shuffle. But don't feel bad, some of the teachers get lost in the shuffle as well. read more

Knowing other schools have better ratings and more kids who look like my daughter, it would have been easy for us to go elsewhere. We chose Montera because we loved the proximity and setting and we knew several kids who had already gone there. It also helped that 30 other families from our top rated public elementary went to Montera together! We are two years in, and we don't regret our decision. Our daughter is engaged and excited about school. She loves her history, computer, and science teachers. They assign interesting work and help the kids work collaboratively. We all love the amazing music program- especially that she is getting 55 minutes of it every day and has many opportunities to perform. Newspaper, Tech Bridge, Restorative Justice, Leadership, feminist club, sports... the options are more than we imagined. Unfortunately, classes are large and there are many students who are not prepared to learn. If you have a focused and motivated child and are interested in good teaching within the social-emotional richness of a very diverse school, Montera is an excellent choice. read more

My daughter is currently in seventh grade at Montera, after having an excellent experience at a top-rated hills elementary school. She was having a great sixth grade year before Covid hit. She was participating in soccer and lunchtime clubs, she was using a planner that the school gave her to learn time management skills, and she had some teachers that she really loved! Distance learning was definitely challenging in the spring of 2020, and we really didn't know what to expect this year, but so far it has been great! We've been really impressed by the dedication, thoughtfulness and communication of the administration and counselors at Montera. I can't imagine how hard it must be to plan for a school year where all the rules are constantly changing, but they have done a great job holding webinars, and zooms, and virtual Q &As and constantly soliciting feedback from the community about what is or is not working. The school is not perfect (none of them are), but we have been happy with our choice! read more

Came from a small private school to this school, it was a rude awakening but at the same time it was needed. This school has left me with a lot of trauma and made me feel behind all the years I went here. Never once did I feel like I was getting the attention I needed to catch up on school work from the teachers. This is all personal experience and I must have just gotten unlucky. 7th grade had no math teacher and was left so behind. We had a substitute all year and she would only help certain kids when she wanted to. This left half the class without a 7th grade math education. Meaning we went into 8th grade with a 6th graders knowledge in math. The teachers are a hit or miss. And most of mine were a miss. All they did was choose favorites. Ex: I could get up to sharpen my pencil and get yelled at for trying to sharpen my pencil but a kid can go and run around the class room and not one word is said to them. The teachers would just assign work without teaching us what we had to do. It was basically like turn this in by this date and it better be perfect no directions or anything. Ex: my 8th grade english teacher wanted us to write a essay in MLA format about a book we had just read. I had no clue what MLA format was until I went to summer school.(summer going into 9th grade) Clueless on what we had to do because no one taught me. This school was one of the worst schools i've been to and I hope to never return. read more

My twins have attended Montera from sixth through eighth grade (2014-17). We have found Montera to be a very good school -- with dedicated teachers, a fabulous administration, and a wonderful Parent-Teacher Organization. We know many people fear large urban public schools; yet we have found it to be a great place to learn and grow.
