As both a parent and a longtime educator, I do not write this lightly: I absolutely love Holy Names.
I actually knew Holy Names was a school I wanted my child to consider long before they ever began here. Over the years, I have met so many incredible alums throughout our community, and I was consistently struck by the confidence, intelligence, warmth, and sense of purpose they carried with them. As a former eighth-grade homeroom teacher, I also had the privilege of touring the school with former graduates and seeing classrooms and live lessons firsthand. Even then, it was apparent that this was a school where students genuinely came first.
Now that my child is here, everything we hoped for has been confirmed--and then some.
We are only a few weeks into their high school experience, but my child is truly beaming in a way I have not seen before. There is an independent joy and confidence developing in them that is simply wonderful to watch as a parent. They feel safe--both physically and socially--and they are already finding their place within a community that is nurturing, welcoming, and genuinely invested in its students.
What stands out most to me is that Holy Names understands that preparing a young person for success means caring for the whole person. Yes, the academics are strong, and yes, the school clearly works to prepare students for whatever path they wish to pursue. The College Access Program is particularly impressive, offering workshops, advising, and opportunities for students to meet directly with college admissions representatives on campus. Students are not simply told to "think about college"; they are given meaningful access, information, guidance, and opportunities to engage with the process and envision what comes next.
But Holy Names goes beyond simply preparing students to get into college. It helps prepare them to become confident young adults who know who they are, understand their own potential, and feel empowered to pursue the success they desire.
The academic support, social and emotional support, community-building opportunities, student events, and school spirit all contribute to that experience. And the strength of the alum community speaks volumes. One of the people who helped inspire my child's decision to attend Holy Names was a beloved school secretary from their elementary school who graduated as part of the Class of 1981. That kind of lifelong connection to a school is not something that can be manufactured. It says something meaningful about the experience students have while they are there--and about how deeply that experience stays with them afterward.
There are also practical things that make a tremendous difference to our family. We are enormously grateful for the financial support available to families, and I have been consistently impressed with the teachers' communication and reporting. And, as a Bay Area parent who is intimately familiar with what traffic can do to one's sanity, I cannot say enough about how much we appreciate the van shuttle service to and from BART. It genuinely saves us hours and makes the daily experience so much more manageable.
Most importantly, my child is happy. They feel safe. They feel supported. And they are already growing into themself in ways that make this parent incredibly grateful.
We truly feel like part of the Holy Names community, and I genuinely cannot wait to watch my child share in--and eventually contribute to--the remarkable history of this school.
Thank you, Holy Names, for all that you do for the future of these amazing young adults. read more
