For the last three years, Oakland Carnival has hosted a free family-friendly festival at Mosswood Park in the spirit of Carijama. Like Carijama, Oakland Carnival celebrates Caribbean, African, and Latino dance and music traditions through live music and dancing. This year, the City of Oakland co-hosted the event which was officially moved from Memorial Day Monday to June 4th via proclamation by the Mayor. The afternoon event featured performances by East Bay-based Carnaval contigents including Sistas w Style, Karibbean Vibrationz, Tambores Julio Remelexo, and hosts SambaFunk. The crowd of picnicking families was invited to join in a samba de roda circle, an electric slide line dance, or to just dance along to the joyful sounds of soca, samba, and funk. There was also impromptu drum circles. There were more vendors and food trucks; hopefully the event will continue to grow in popularity. read more
