A friend posted a link to a Ledger Dispatch article about a missing woman and asked everyone to…read morespread the word. I couldn't even read the article without registering, which wouldn't be a problem... although it's a bit invasive to require a home address and phone number. I tried anyway, then received an email saying my registration would be reviewed before sending me a password. I gave up. I get requiring registration with real information before posting comments, but to READ an article? Guess what, jerks... the woman is dead. Not sure of the circumstances yet, but maybe you should let everyone read the important news, no? Maybe this sort of tragedy might be prevented in the future?

Every time I criticize the Ledger Dispatch on-line by posting comments about one of their stories,…read morethey prevent me from logging on to their site. This has happened to me four times. I find it hard to believe that a newspaper would respond to negative comments by preventing those comments from appearing on their web site. I guess First Amendment rights have little meaning for the morons that run that rag. As for the stories they publish, they lack detail and let the most obvious questions go unanswered (I call this the Ledger Dispatch's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy of news reporting).

In the one month the service has been active I have NEVER received the paper as ordered- at least one delivery is missed in the 4 days per week I should receive it. Sigh- it's a crap shoot which day they'll miss.. Repeated calls and emails to their subscription services result in automated replies to assure me they have fixed the problem- never a live response or even an unscripted, original reply. I believe even the Modesto Bee has no faith it'll be relevant in the foreseeable future and thus does not address customer loyalty in any significant way.

Instead of cancelling at the end of May 29, it will cancel on April 29 which is fine except for the fact that leaves an $8 and some change credit which they refuse to refund!!!! BTW...if you have NEWS+ on your Apple account ...you get the Modesto Bee free!!!

The Independent is a good local paper that posts honest reviews, and openly allows debate from all sides of issues. I do not always agree with the editor, but when she states her opinion, she states it AS HER OPINION. So editorial honesty is present. When our City Council sold out to a developer to pack the downtown and ruin its parking and atmosphere, she stated so. And she also printed opposition to her opinion. That is fair journalism. The Independent and Carmel's PineCone are two papers everybody should read. You get a small town approach from people who care. We may have lost control of the two local papers we had, as they are now controlled by outsiders, but we have the Independent. Take a free subscription, you won't regret it.

One quirky but nifty aspect of a local newspaper in a town with a huge physics lab is that there are always interesting articles about the latest LNLL or Sandia news, with a pretty good description of the science behind it. But sadly it doesn't seem willing to compete in that arena. Love the Lodestar though, especially its Amador coverage, so am adding a star for that but that is going to change if they can't hang onto Scott Anderson. The Enterprise seems to have trouble finding an editor that will stick and the online version is better than the competition but seems to be stuck in certain areas, or maybe isn't updated completely. At least they're hanging in there, and may feel or be threatened by the "nut news" of Amador, purporting to cover Calaveras also, with their apparently unlimited funding.
