See Lincoln's Tomb, the crypt where Lincoln was interred prior to the completion of his family tomb, and the war memorials. Located in Oak Ridge Cemetery, a granite tomb and 117-foot obelisk serve as the final resting place for President Abraham Lincon, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four children, Eddie, Willie and Tad. Robert is buried at Arlington Cemetery. You can go inside the landmark and visit the semicircular receiving room. Bronze statues honoring Lincoln line the walkway leading to the Lincoln family tomb and chamber. Read the story about the Chicago grave robbers that attempted to steal the body and hold it for ransom. This led ultimately to Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving son, requesting that Lincoln's remain be moved to their final resting place a concrete vault 10 feet below the surface of the burial room. A bronze recasting of Gutzon Borglum's head of Lincoln stands on an outside pedestal. Borglum is most famous for his work on Mount Rushmore. WWII. The Korea War. The Vietnam War. Purple Heart. It is worth the drive to visit the War Memorials and honor those who fought and many who died during those wars. I have no idea how this place is to buy a plot or be buried, but to visit, this is the most beautiful cemetery I've ever explored. The rolling hills are majestic and the different areas just keep going. If I lived in the area, I could see running and walking here regularly. The monuments and mausoleums are works of art going back centuries. If you are driving through this area, this is the number one place to visit. read more

Yes, this is the final resting place of US President Abraham Lincoln. It's also the final resting place of many local notables and politicians and yes, many regular people. It is an active cemetery with ongoing memorials, so if you could please be respectful for those people? You'll find Congressman William Joshua Allen who served from 1862 to 1865. And Doctor William Jayne who was governor of the Dakota Territory from 1861 to 1863. John Alexander McClernand who reached the rank of Major General though was relieved of command by General Grant due to his unauthorized communication with the press, but he was an ally of President Lincoln who restored it later. And Robert Newton Pearson who reached the rank of Brevet Brigadier General during the Civil War. And conman/swindler Reed C. Waddell. And Medal of Honor recipient Arthur Harrison Wilson. And one of the more impressive memorials, that of John Riley Tanner who served as Governor of Illinois from 1897 to 1901. The cemetery is drivable and walkable. Cemeteries freak me out. At the same time, I'm interested them from a cultural and historical perspective. I'm a complicated woman. Oak Ridge Cemetery is famous as the resting place of president Abraham Lincoln. He lies here with Mary Todd Lincoln and three of their four children (Robert Lincoln is buried in Arlington National Cemetery). For obvious reasons, the tomb is the focal point of the museum. In addition to Lincoln, several prominent Illinoisans are laid to rest here as well. Politicians, custodians of the Lincoln tomb, prominent lawyers (some of whom worked with Lincoln), and the poet Vachel Lindsey are all buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery as well. In addition to these notable people, there are war memorials for veterans of the Korean War, World War II, and Vietnam War. There is no fee to visit. If you choose to visit here, you won't need a lot of time (unless you'd like to wander the cemetery more broadly). read more

This cemetery is filled with so much history and natural beauty that it doesn't even feel like you're in a cemetery...It's a sensory journey so pleasing you'll be dead set on returning.. Beyond being meticulously maintained.. the lush greenery, rolling hills and massive gorgeous oak trees are abundant throughout and some can even be traced back to Lincoln's time and earlier. We stopped here to visit Lincoln's tomb and while we didn't have time to walk around the enormous grounds, the beauty here is beyond words. We only saw one or two people walking around during our visit but I can see coming here often just to find peace and solace.. This is the final resting place of Lincoln, his wife and 3 (out of 4) children and is the second most visited cemetery in the US, first being Arlington National. A number of prominent Illinois politicians are buried here as well as memorials for the Korean War, WW II and IL Vietnam Veterans. During the pandemic gates close at 8pm daily. Definitely worth a visit..it's so much more than graves.. read more

Had an awful experience here! The woman who works here that closes the gates ruined the experience for my whole family... She tried to kick us out 15mins before closing, she was rude, loud and drove erratically away from us. Never coming back! read more

Good luck if you buy a crypt or plot from Oak Ridge. My family has niche's and crypts in the mausoleum. My sister (who is presently making payments on her crypt) had a deceased person put in the one she bought and the Oak Ridge office/administrative staff said "oops!" and moved the person. They left glue all over the marble when they removed the plaque. I called today to payoff my husband and my crypts and were told their computer system was not accurate and not even the Manager could help me to obtain an accurate payoff. The office clerk said she "she was glad as this proves the computer is messed up and wanted me to call back Tuesday to prove to the lady in charge of the office that it was incorrect. The payoff they told me I owed was more than I showed we owed. This was a 0% interest payment that was simple math and I have all the receipts and payment coupons until the end of my loan. I was still told they could not help me! Needless to say, I have very little confidence in this place. read more
