This is a nice course and yes, you have to pay to get into the State Park. That's not a big deal as I don't mind supporting the park. What I do mind is being badgered every other hole during my round. We were exactly one shot behind the group ahead of us and the starter/ranger complained saying we needed to speed up. The price of the course is probably the most reasonable in the area. They just need to work on their customer service. read more

The starters here are idiots Imagine being 70 and being such an idiot still. They are literally incompetent. We had two groups of 3 playing one at a time and then the group in front of us was taking literally 20 minutes per hole. I have never seen such bad golf. They let us play through so we had to play in a group of 6. We were still playing 5 minutes faster per hole than the group we had passed. When we got to the 9th hole an old starter began to berate us and tell us to never come back even after we explained what happened. We asked why it was bad if we sped up play and he said because the sign says so. Don't care if they don't want us back because I'd rather pay more to deal with less incompetent people! read more

This is a scenic course that is located in the heart of Oak Mountain State Park. Most of the fairways are lined by mature trees and woods. The course is long and relatively flat. I recommend using a push cart if you choose to walk. The greens are large and are seeded with Bermuda grass. They are usually a bit slow so you can putt aggressively. The course is challenging and especially the four par 5s. Water is in play on three and the fourth is the last hole. It is 529 yards and it runs along the main road in the park. One of my favorite holes is #6. It is a par 3 that plays around 150 yards. Directly behind the green is a mountain side that provides a beautiful background. The view from the tee box is spectacular during the fall. The pace of play can be slow, and especially on weekends. The starter and marshals are usually old geezers who are not very friendly. The clubhouse is nice but not fancy. It has the feel of a state park or muni run course. read more

Had a great day at Oak Mountain. Shot an 88 which is a good round for me. The course was in good shape and front desk was cordial. I had a Golf Now voucher which presented no problems. Met couple locals on first hole and enjoyed the round with them. Only issue was the entry gate. Lady working was yakking on her cell phone and not paying attention. I had a return receipt for two and was by myself and due to her taking care of personal business she had problems giving me my reciept back for another free visit to the park. I love the course especially with the discount provided by Golf Now. Will be returning!!! read more

I left work early and drove 40 minutes across town to walk 9 at this course. I paid 5$ to get into the park. I showed up at 5:05 and the guys in the pro shop wouldn't let me play. It gets dark at 7:00 (I'd finish by 6:30) and there was a course 10 minutes from my workplace I could've played. I chose to drive across town and play this course because I used to live here and it is nostalgic for me. Never again. This staff is the definition of laziness and is the reason the course conditions are going to crap. Don't play here. read more

We had a 3:20 tee time, walkers in front of us and groups behind us, some kid comes up and starts yelling at us to return our carts when we were on hole 10. We were never told we had to be back by 7, and none of the groups around us were either. The clubhouse and carts are old too, and you have to pay to get into the park on top of paying for golf. Just pay the $5 extra to play at a real golf course and not a state park. read more

They cram as many people on the course on the weekends as possible so play is pretty slow. 4.5-5 hours. $5 to get in the state park and then they nickel and dime you for everything they can. This was my first time playing this course and while the price is about $10 cheaper than a typical RTJ golf course the quality of facilities are not even in the same ballpark. These facilities are old and they feel old, the golf carts are old, the range balls are old...there is no modernization to the facilities since the mid-90's. The range is poorly kept with little to no grass to hit off but the putting green is nice along with a chipping green. The golf course itself is a nice layout with good maintenance. The greens are a little spongy but receptive with majority of the greens lush (some dead spots). Now, I am fully aware this is a State park golf course and so the expectations should not be as high as a RTJ golf course but there are some basics that need to be fulfilled for the golfer to enjoy the experience and make a choice to play this course. read more

The course is great for the price. The drawback is the staff, especially one of the course marshals that also served as the start man for our foursome. He was very rude. He insisted we be back to the clubhouse at 7 pm because that was when his shift ended. We were reminded of this at least 6 times throughout the round. He also made rude comments, saying that we were playing too slow. The course was not busy and we played the first nine in 2 hours. We returned at 7pm on the nose, and as we were walking away, he said "maybe you should play faster next time". We did nothing to upset this man, so I'm not sure why he was acting this way. I could go on about other things he said, but I won't. It's going to be hard for me to come back to Oak Mountain in the future. If you want to play twilight golf, don't play at Oak Mountain. read more

Hands down the best golf value in the Birmingham area. A scenic setting and a very walkable course (and a walker-friendly one at that). Improvements to the green complexes in recent years have made a big difference in modernizing the track. There might be nicer golf courses out there, but for what you pay to play Oak Mtn., it's awfully hard to beat. read more

DO NOT GOLF HERE. I booked a tee time through GolfNow and paid in full online, something I regularly do when I golf at courses across the South. Some courses do not partner with GolfNow which is perfectly fine! But Oak Mountain lists tee times on GolfNow which I saw and decided it would be worth the drive over to golf. Upon arrival there are signs inside that say GolfNow reservations will not be honored without written confirmation. I have NEVER been required to bring a print out confirmation. It's an iPhone app for heavens sake. And apparently I'm supposed to be psychic and know that they will require this. Signs on the door DO NOT HELP when I have never been there and live far away. This guy seriously suggested I drive to a hotel and ask to borrow a printer... But even then I attempt to bring up a confirmation on the app and the guy is uninterested. INCREDIBLY rude right from the start. And says I can pay full price to play. He even pulls up my reservation on his computer and says that is not good enough. HE WANTS TO DOUBLE CHARGE ME. He then tells me that I paid significantly less than the normal rate. I'm sorry, you're the one that partnered with GolfNow, I just booked a time. I don't know what the normal rate is. So I call GolfNow, GolfNow calls the course AND THE GUY IS RUDE TO GOLFNOW AND STILL WON'T LET ME PLAY WITHOUT PAYING FULL PRICE! I got a refund from GolfNow and will never return to this rude, ungrateful, behind the times waste of space at our beautiful state park. read more
