Let me walk you through the single most impressive act of self-sabotage I have ever witnessed in a…read morebar. My brother and I came in for a beer. One of the musicians performing that night -- a person actively generating the atmosphere this establishment was selling -- handed us a free drink ticket. Lovely. A nice gesture from a nice human being. Our server arrives. We order. We mention the ticket. She says she has to make another drink first and will be right back. She was not right back. She was gone for twenty minutes. We know this because we spent those twenty minutes sitting there like two abandoned houseplants, eventually flagging her down ourselves, because apparently at this bar the customer is responsible for locating the staff. And when she finally returned? She refused the ticket. The reason: the band had left. I want everyone reading this to sit with that. The ticket was valid when we presented it. It became invalid during a delay she created, for a reason entirely outside our control, and she then delivered that news to us as though we had done something wrong. She ran out the clock and then cited the clock. This is not a small thing. This is a bar that will make a promise, take twenty minutes to not honor it, and then explain that the promise expired while you were waiting for the person who was supposed to honor it. If they'll do that over one beer, imagine what happens when something actually goes wrong -- a wrong charge, a bad tab, a real problem. The drink was worth about six dollars. The reputation was worth more. They chose the six dollars. Go literally anywhere else. If I could rate this lower than one star I would.

I've been here a few times. Tonight I came to see a friend perform and was handed a drink ticket on…read morethe way in. I ordered with it. When the drink arrived, I was asked to pay for it anyway. Nobody had mentioned that the ticket was partial, or conditional, or whatever it turned out to be. It was simply handed to me at the door with the confidence of something that meant something. I paid, because the alternative was making a scene in front of a band, and I have a rule about that. I'm not angry. I'd just like someone to explain what the ticket was for. Not to me specifically. To anyone. Out loud, at the door, before the transaction. The show was good. The room is fine. The math was not explained. Don't think I'll be coming back.

This is a Yelp recommendation. These places are great for team building. The more games and events,…read morethe better. Competitions, choosing who excels at what skill and such. I would prefer no alcohol, however, since this was a volunteer participation activity for the crew, it was everyone for themselves. The gang started off on the first floor at the lounge. There's a large variety of games to get things started, even on the walls, themselves. There's also a cafe with a few pretty good food options. Eventually, we migrated to the second floor and began wielding the axes. If you've read my previous writings you'll understand why I was disqualified and Marshalled the events. FWIW, at the end I threw against the top axe chucker and thoroughly cleaned his clock. This should garner me creds amongst the younger folk. Back downstairs for more snacks, drinks and the results. Thanks to the folks at Detroit Axe for an incredible experience. This will most likely be an annual event. 11/25

However, it's a violation of Visa and Mastercard rules to charge a surcharge to a debit card. The bowling balls were plentiful to choose from and I believe you can pay by game or by the hour. I wasn't sure since I didn't pay for my games. However, the rudeness of the man at the register really was annoying. Better customer service skills are recommended. This review is for a private event held at Belmar Lanes--my husband's grandmother turned 90 and the…read morefamily rented out the bowling alley for her birthday. (Yes, she still bowls!) We were able to bring in catered food and had a nice area with a large table for gifts, cake, etc. It seemed like they had assigned us about half of the bowling alley; I saw non-family members on one side when we first got there, and others coming in as we were leaving. That left us plenty of space and four or five lanes to bowl in. Bowling and shoes seemed to be included with the rental. While it was a nice party, this place does have a couple of quirks. For one, I could not find a weight on any of the balls I tried. Isn't that kind of important information for bowlers? I had to just keep trying until I found one that fit my hand. Another weird thing was that they combined groups of bowlers and moved us across lanes. Like, I was bowling in a group assigned to lane 13, but the system would shuffle us in with lane 14 so sometimes you'd bowl on one side and sometimes on the other. This made it so that sometimes you bowled twice like one turn right after the other, and sometimes you sat and waited for a long time while everyone else cycled through. I really just did not understand the logic there at all; it did not seem to make the game go any faster or anything. Finally, Belmar has that classic bowling lane smell: decades of cigarette smoke seeped into the surroundings. Perfectly fine, nothing outstandingly amazing or horribly awful. A solid 3 stars.
