I'd doubt most people even know it exists. And yet, it is one I wish everyone in this city would visit at least once. Located on the back southeast corner of the Haskell Indian Nations campus are several rows of graves enclosed by a modern metal fence, the headstones, many from the late 1800s, but a few as late as 1943. It's the reading of those stones that give you pause and tell the sad story. Approximately 100 indigenous children yanked from families and tribes, brought to the campus location when it was a boarding school for native American children--against their will one can only surmise-- for a taste of white European upbringing. Their deaths shrouded in descriptions that suggest many had no way to fend off diseases and illnesses they had no natural immunity against: consumption, pneumonia, accidental death (?), typhoid-malaria, heart and kidney problems. And yet most were under the age of 18. Their headstones filled with common European names surely assigned them upon arrival, their tribe name the only nod to the truth. Over the years I've visited a number of times. One common theme, small toys, trinkets and flowers left upon graves of young children, yet still being remembered by many, likely students of the University, but that's only a guess. Make a point to visit. Peruse the names, the dates, the ages. If this isn't the most powerful piece of history in this city I don't know what is, and it's one we should all be aware of. If you come: street access from the far southeast corner of campus but also from the East Lawrence bike path between 23rd and 29th with one single, short path headed west a few feet through the trees which deposits you squarely at the back of the cemetery. Most definitely worth a visit.

When grieving a loved one we did not need to be figuring out how to resize a document to be readable let alone to sign and complete. That was our last straw before switching to a different funeral service. When they did finally transfer our loved to the other funeral home they failed to return their belongings. We had to keep calling them to get the belongings. We quickly learned of other families who had poor experiences with Grateful Gatherings as well. Do not use this company.
