What began as a kickstarter project to make Durham Central Park an even better destination spot and give kids an activity, quickly took off. The community came together and raised $200,000 to fund the park. In addition to the food truck rodeos, skate park, farmers market and summer concert series that Durham Central Park offers, they now offer Mount Merrill, The play-mound offers two slides, a climbing net, great amphitheater seating, a ramp up to a "look-out!" area (you have to stretch your imagination here a bit), a boulder climb (mostly just piles of rocks) and lots of sculptural art (that was previously in the park and now is claimed by Mount Merrill). While Mount Merrill can't compare to many other play structures in the area, the tiny small mound is a lot of fun for kids of all ages (I too enjoy the big slide!) and I hope to see some improvements made to it in the summer months. Durham Central Park, with the addition of Mount Merrill, has quickly become a place for the whole family and a destination that I can see my nieces and nephews taking their children someday, just like I've taken them. Good job Durham, keep up the community building! I love the idea, it's just the size of the park that gives it a three-star, hopefully they'll add on to it in the summer!

Sky Zone is located near North Gate Mall, which isn't the best or most exciting area of town, but they offer plenty of parking and fun for the entire family. With arcade games, concessions and multiple jumping areas, including a foam pit, two separate dodgeball areas, three jumping basketball hoops and two separate straight jump areas. We arrived a little after ten and joined the 10:30-11:30a group. Groups begin are very 15 minutes and you/your kids will have large stickers showing your time so that the monitors can kick you out once your time is up. Speaking of monitors, they're very alert on the floor and I really respect the way the interacted with patrons. It can't be an easy job but they were very active in making sure little kids don't get trampled and people stay in appropriate areas. Make sure to check out their website for daily deals and times, Wednesdays are 1/2 off jumping and the "Go Play Save" coupon book offers several deals. You will have to purchase the special socks or bring your clean socks when you jump, no sock discounts.

The SkyZone website explicitly states that all SkyZone gift cards are honored at all locations. Said I could pay full price or leave. The kids had started jumping because of how long it took to resolve the issue and she said they needed to stop immediately. There is no way to escalate concerns with this company; only deal with the individual location. The way they treat their customers is disappointing and this doesn't even speak to all the negative reviews you see here on Yelp. There are much nicer parks in the area that value your business like Urban Air.

So, Tuesday (a day off), I had been puttering around the house and finally decided to have a late lunch, when my phone buzzes. "I'm going to play pickleball." "Where?" "Walltown" "Are they playing there tonight? It's not listed on the DP&R website" "probably cause it's not permanent?" So, ten minutes later I'm on Club Blvd, just east of Broad Street. I parked in one of the lots, walked in and waved to my friend in the gym. They had the nets up, and one other person was there. I checked in and paid the nice lady at the desk $3 (I'm a Senior and a Durham resident), she strapped a wristband on me, and we spent the next hour swatting whiffle balls in air-conditioned comfort, rather than out in the heat, swatting bugs and fighting to breathe. The facility hosts a lot of different events for folks of all ages, judging by the flyers all over. There is a track around the gym upstairs, as well as weights and machines that were being very sparsely used on a weeknight. It was all very clean, well maintained, and the folks everywhere were friendly. As we left, we were reading the bulletin boards in the hallway about the history of the area and the facility. We peeked into a game room and asked the group of maybe 30 folks what card game they were playing. "Pinochle!" came the answer from half a dozen folks. Glad to know there are places like this near my home. I need to check out more of what the Parks & Rec folks are doing.

Several times two of the instructors talked with one another the entire time and paid no attention to the kids. Another time the teacher spent the entire time rearranging equipment while ignoring the children. A third time, the teacher told the kids there would be free time and then ignored the kids for the entire class. This is for a beginning class. I would also be wary of upper level classes if you want your child to be treated respectfully, since I have witnessed one teacher repeatedly, over many weeks, berate young children at a more advanced level. Also, Google the company's history.

My daughter is young and is no gymnastics prodigy, but for example she had been here like 24 times and she still doesn't know which hand to use to start her cartwheels. She's left handed and even in front of her teachers she will use a different hand each time trying to figure it out. I put her in gymnastics to learn some basics at least. The instructors barely help them do their stretches correctly. Half the time each kid is doing something different. RIGHT NOW I'm watching kids all doing their stretches a different way and the instructor zoning out. 7 kids in her class, one instructor for 60 mins isn't enough to teach which hand to start with. I'll just use YouTube going forward. 18 year old high school student instructors are just not trained in dealing with young children. Not for this price anyways.
