The reason I chose this beach is because of the towering mountains that rise right behind the sand and the green scenery that makes you feel like you stepped into a movie set. I have been to Hawaii plenty of times, but never here, and the moment I arrived it took my breath away. Instead it turned out to be a beach clean up as our heart ached to see that irresponsible visitors would have the audacity to leave their trash on our beach! "Auwe" in Hawaiian is like saying "SMH." Shame on whomever left these things behind. It is disrespectful and folks should know better. Especially on base! For the previous reviewer that noticed all the flies....it's from the dog poop left by the horrible dog owner who couldn't take two additional steps to the proper garbage bin! After 1 hour, he had the kids doing tricks. I appreciate the push into small waves, which I could then ride 150+ yards - a lifetime high! Yesterday, I "found" a "new" beach!…read more How I got there: As a volunteer for the Kailua Beach Clean-up, in celebration of Earth Day, there were several buses that drove volunteers to sites along the Kailua coastline. If I drove there myself, I would turn left at Kalapawai Market on North Kalaheo Avenue, instead of turning right to Kailua Beach. After passing Kalama Beach, I'd park at the residential area on or near Kailauana Place and Kailuana Loop, then walk to the sign at the entrance to the access road. The sign reads, "Kailuana Brow". The word, "brow", refers to an entryway. It was a flat, relatively easy walk along a sandy pathway that opened up into a clean, white, soft-sanded beach with a steady, cool breeze. It was so beautiful, that I may just have to return! It seemed to stretch out to forever... Notes: there are no facilities (restroom, shower, picnic benches/tables, lifeguard, etc.). It's just an open, natural space for all to enjoy! There weren't many people there - so unlike Waikiki Beach! Lucky we live Hawaii!

I had been working with her son, so I wanted to see him in person and drop off a sympathy card. I asked a bunch of classmates to join me, but Kahana Bay is about a 45-minute drive from Honolulu without traffic. Most people had to work or had other plans. Two gals were able to attend! Towards the end of the journey to Kahana Bay Beach, the road narrows down to one lane. Along the way, the scenery is breathtaking because some of the road is right next to the ocean. Using GPS, I entered the first parking lot, but I didn't see any signs. I parked at the next parking lot - which was for Kahana Bay Camping Site - and I walked on the sand to the Beach Park. I found the large tent with many white picnic tables and benches. I signed in at the reception table and presented my envelope. My friend's son was there - so I had a chance to chat with him before the service. The parking was all free. Some parts of the lot weren't paved. The sand was white and almost powdery-fine in texture. The foliage grew wildly. The shade from the trees was much appreciated. This was a peaceful area with no cell phone service. It was a place where my friend had spent her childhood... and now she has been laid to rest here... Aloha 'oe, Lyanne... until we meet again...

The restrooms are a little strange since the stalls are half the height of typical stalls. If someone is already in there you may just want to wait until they are finished. We saw some dogs here that seemed homeless. Hopefully we were wrong and their owners were close by. We did not stay too long since it was raining and chilly. Overall, it was a nice place to stop and rest before continuing our drive.

Amy M. and I had never seen the movie. I think now, we will - since we visited the beach where part of the movie was filmed. We parked up at the top where the Halona Blow Hole parking lot is. You can see Sandy Beach from this parking lot/Lookout, as well as the as The Blow Hole and Eternity Beach. The view is awesome! To get to Eternity Beach, you'd have to be careful and walk down a rocky incline. Amy and I were just happy to be together and enjoy the scenery and cool breeze! The beach itself looks safe. There were many people hanging out and a few were swimming in the clear, clean water! I would return again to show Hawaii's natural beauty to another friend or visitor to Oahu. It's an excellent vacation destination!
