Buyer Beware -- I Would Not Recommend This Dealership!…read more We purchased a $9000 - 2015 Volkswagen GTI manual transmission from A Better Way Auto because my husband specifically wanted one as a hobby car. We have other vehicles and excellent credit, so this was purely a passion purchase. This dealer seems to cater to people with challenges and I was very uncomfortable but my husband wanted this as a hobby car. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from start to finish. The vehicle had cosmetic damage, which we knew about. Our salesperson, Johnny, assured us it would be cleaned up and that there were no major mechanical issues as noted by their mechanics. The cosmetic items were addressed before pickup. During financing, we were pressured to purchase a $4,000 transmission warranty on an 11-year-old vehicle, despite putting $5,000 down. The finance representative's attitude when we declined was ridiculous. I thought it was a joke. Unfortunately, the joke was on us. We didn't even make it ONE BLOCK from the dealership before the car started smoking! We immediately returned. Johnny our salesperson seemed uninterested, and their mechanic claimed he had spilled oil during an oil change. He assured us the smoke and burning smell would disappear once the oil burned off. It didn't. In fact, the smell was so strong I could smell it from my own vehicle while following my husband home! Three weeks later, we noticed oil leaking and took the car to our local mechanic. He discovered missing bolts and a hole in the transmission case near the driver's-side axle. According to him, damaged metal flanges were cutting into the transmission case. So much for the spilled-oil explanation! We didn't contact the dealership again because we understood the vehicle was sold as is. However, there's a difference between accepting normal wear on an older car and being assured a smoking vehicle is perfectly fine when significant mechanical damage is subsequently discovered. What bothers me most is that we reported the problem within minutes of leaving their lot, and their mechanic dismissed it to spilled oil. Whether they knew about the damage or simply overlooked it, I can't say. Either way, their explanation didn't match what our independent mechanic found. My advice: If you have other options, go elsewhere. If you must purchase here, have an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle BEFORE signing anything. We expected an older hobby car that might need some TLC, not a transmission problem immediately after purchase. Buyer beware!
