But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.

I have visited Finnigan's Chin numerous times over the past 3 years, and find the atmosphere to be pretty down to earth, the staff to be friendly and the food and drinks to be of a reasonable price and quality. Don't visit expecting really trendy pub food, though if you enjoy a good steak, Chicken Schnitzel or Bangers and Mash along with a drink, then you should leave feeling satisfied. Finnigan's Chin often does raffles around dinner time, giving you the chance to win a meat tray or a drink voucher, which can be a bit of fun. There is plenty of free parking around the establishment.

I went there for a cheap feed with my wife one night and we both decided to get the chicken schnitzel that was a bargain for fewer than ten dollars. A couple of drinks and thirty minutes later our plates were served. The schnitzel was of a pretty standard size, the standard of what you would buy at Woolies. The salad was freshish and was heavily coated in a vinegarette. The chips were on the soggy side of crisp and I suspect had been in the hot bin for a while. I'll be honest. If I come back, I wont be ordering the same meal because I know I could have prepared the same thing better and in less time at home.

Yeah, basically you can get a beer here, and it is pretty decent beer as well. However, this is one of those places you come to if you like whiskey. Still, I personally quite liked the bar, since the atmosphere, and the beer, was pretty good.

The ground floor gives way to a grand timber bar, and an impressive wall of over 175 whiskeys, with barmen greeting punters and mixing some stunning cocktails, under the gaze of the vintage penny farthing adorning the bare brick walls. Cobbler has become my favourite midweek haunt for a quick cocktail (or three) with friends, and it just does not disappoint. The staff are gifted when it comes to their craft, and are gracious in recommending a new drink, or trying a different mix of an old favourite. It's a strictly BYO Food affair, but it only adds to the charm of the space. There's an upstairs lounge with recliners, and a internal deck that overlooks the space below. With drinks named like 'The men of the night's watch', and the 'Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster' it's clear Cobbler doesn't take itself too seriously, and it leaves it up to its drinks to speak for it. Parking is a challenge, but hey, welcome to West End. If you're up for a quiet drink, or a fancy yourself a whiskey enthusiast, I challenge you to find a more enjoyable place to sip, contemplate the world, or just people watch.
