If you like meat, nothing beats going to a local butcher's and ordering the cut you like at the…read moreprices you like. Bob Wherlock is the best. Juicy sausages of twenty different flavours (the jalapeno ones knock your socks off), thick steaks, roasting joints and stewing meat and more. They know what they're talking about and can advise on the best meats and condiments for your dinner party or Sunday roast. The cheeses are lush too (although quite basic English cheddars, red leicesters etc). A serious word of warning. The meat-eaters of Southville know all about the delights of Bob Wherlock. Consequently, I have queued for a very long time on a Saturday morning to get served (over half an hour sometimes). The people snake down North Street waiting for their sunday roasting joint or chicken. The Christmas turkey rush is even worse - but that's a sure sign it's very good meat. If that's not enough to prove to you how great this place is (and you've yet to taste the meat) Bob himself recently won a local food hero award. Well deserved.

If you're not sure what to have then they are ready with good ideas and happy to explain what the cut means. They are generous with their portions, and the quality is very good. They have choices of local meats clearly labelled if you want to keep it close to home.

The specials when I visited was a tasty butternut squash salad, which I would highly recommend, they also do freshly made soups. The food tasted very organic and very whole - I couldn't detect a single added sugar or synthetic flavouring, what you get here is real, honest, good food and reasonable prices. The staff wear creams aprons and there's a good selection of things to buy, although you couldn't do your weeks shopping there. Unfortunately there isn't a great deal of seating, just some bar stools inside, so more of a quick lunch or snack stop although there were tables and chairs on the shop front which I imagine get snapped up pretty quick in the warmer weather!

Indeed, the bread selection here is incredible, and displayed beautifully in the window, next to shelves full of organic yummy things, and a section of alternative, wheat- and gluten-free foods. Delve further inside and you reach the deli cafe, which is small, but great for coffee and cake or for a small sandwichy lunch. With a lovely local farm shop feel, this place is a pleasant alternative to bigger wholefoods shops, and you're guaranteed friendly service. I wouldn't come here if you're looking for somewhere to linger over a coffee with a friend, as the cafe bit is small.
