I still am not a fan. Echo Gate is located on the noisiest section of the river walk. You can really hear the traffic on the Morrison Bridge overhead. Its symbolism has to do with Portland history. I found it while walking the Eastbank Esplanade one rainy November morning while looking for the Vera Katz Statue. I am glad I did. Any way, it is nice to stop, look at it and contemplate, I don't know, maybe the meaning of life? How life is really just an echo of the past? The gate going from one stage of life to another? A gate where you leave the echoes of the past behind? Or just carry on with your walk/bike ride/run. Whatever. Don't litter!

I walk past this park all the time and sometimes if I'm lucky I'll see a shiny, red fire truck parked next to it and handsome, strapping firemen will be out there mowing the grass and doing other tasks to maintain it. However it is the David Campbell Memorial Association that is charged with the maintenance of the park. Built in 1927 and on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, this park is special because it is a memorial to all of Portland's fallen firefighters. It gets it's name from former fire chief David Campbell who lost his life fighting a fire at the Union Oil Company in 1911. It saddens me to see the homeless and degenerates that plague Burnside Street camping out, drinking and leaving their rubbish behind for the firefighters and others to pick up after you. Show some respect for these men and women that risk their lives for us. Pick up your fucking garbage. Portland Firefighters Park was built in 1927 as a memorial for David Campbell who was Fire Chief from 1893-1911 as well as other Portland brave firefighters who died in the line of duty. David Campbell was killed in action while fighting a fire at a union Oil distribution plant. I experienced this park as I was walking in Portland and couldn't help but stop and read all the history that this place has. You can walk or drive right by and truly pay no attention to the place, but the closer I looked, the more interested I was in getting to know what was the park for. The main feature of the park is a fountain honoring David Campbell, next to the fountain is smaller plaques honoring all of the city's fallen firefighters. Its location in a weird spot but the history and beauty of it truly makes up for it. This public park is located in downtown Portland at SW 19th & Burnside, right next to PGE Park and the shiny new Civic condo tower and across from a McDonalds. You truly can't miss it!

It's a little walk-through between Elephant's outdoor employee lounge and 22nd Place. So many homes like this in NW were demolished. Hazel Hall died young in a wheel chair since a childhood disease at 12. Though she began writing at age 9, and continued; her national poetic career only registered age 30-38. She lived at home, this home, operating a sewing business from her chair. Portland OG DIY. There are some plaques with her poems in this parklet, but no seating or camping is allowed. If you have to take a test, be there before 3:30 in order to ensure you get to take the test. if you're retaking the test go there a little before 4 and they'll let you cut in line. if you're going to do any other things other then driving test, go there right after 4 and the wait is a matter of minutes.
