The Hat Factory ( in English ) is just off the main square in the center of town - get to the cyclists statues and look across to the right.
Do yourself a favour if you find yourself in Vasteras , go here at least once , best to go twice thinking about it.
The place itself is very nice - the bar \ restaurant is smallish - maybe 30 covers plus bar area.
usual swedish type bar - few drafts to choose from mix of swedish and continental beers - few good bottles of beer and an array of wine and spirts.
The bar itself is good, well appointed and has a stone top which i like.
If you go towards the far end away from the main door you can see into the open theatre style kitchen and watch the chefs at work.
So onto the food - well I have eaten here on my last three visits to Vasteras and have to say the first two times were exceptional but last weeks visit, probably the best steak I ever had. And I say that as somebody who has eaten steaks in NYC which is reputed to have some of the best steak houses in the world.
The T Bone steak here was a 1.2kg slab of meat ( for two of us ) and took 40 mins to cook. It was tender, cooked medium and was more than enough for two people.
The steak was presented on a wooden plinth garnished with vine tomatoes and garlic bulbs. The chefs had cut the meat down into fillets going up the length of the T so it was just a case of digging in.
Steak knife was provided but the meat was so tender you could cut it using the side of a fork !!
At the end of the meal we had to ask the chef how he got such a big piece of meat so well cooked but also why it takes 40 mins for a steak.
he explained that they flash each side of the meat in a hot pan then transfer to a special oven , then repeat the process a number of times until the meat is just right.
He got it right !!
If you are in town try this place - you better book though !
PS - £140.00 for the steak full bill £400.00 with tip ( 3 people )
even at that we agreed worth every penny ! read more
