I contacted NW Tree Work based off all the fantastic reviews here. When initially meeting with John I was told that the project would be done within an hour of there set date. The project being a tree removal, as well planting within a foot away (due to sprinklers only being able to reach so far). With that being said I had set a time and date with them to do the job. I ordered the tree for delivery the day prior, but once the day came for the job it was a no show. Concerned, I contacted NW Tree Work to see what was going on. Turns out they are short staff. I'm pretty reasonable so I go ahead and try to reschedule. This time, I'm told the job is more complex so a new date is set. Once the new date rolls around, again, no show. At this point I'm constantly contacting NW Tree Work to the point they are reading my messages but not replying. I have to call every single time to get a hold of someone, to which I'm told I will get a reply later in the day, and to which I don't. It takes me contacting each day to try and reschedule only to be told a date the project will get done by and for someone to not show up. Big waste of time. On top of that, when speaking to John he assured me the prior weekend he'd get the job done and not only that move the tree out of public view and water it so it's okay. Sadly, none of that ever happened or came into fruition, the trees flowers started dying off due to it not being properly taken care of which it would have been had it been planted as planned. Ultimately this lead to a lot of back and forth. Whether its short-staffed or health related issues, telling a customer a date you're going to get the job done and continuously bailing is not the right response to do. The kicker was John calling me later that day to tell me how to give more trust and understanding to professionals and how delays happen and it's all normal. How about building that trust with customers first by not bailing on them multiple times over and over again, then we can have that conversation. Aside from all the negatives, I can give them credit for at least reimbursing me on the tree (though they only would if they ended up taking it). I'm not typically one to leave reviews, but I think it's important for anybody else on this platform to be informed with what potential risks you have working with certain companies. Emotions aside, this is just my personal experience with the company and for that I would not recommend them moving forward. read more

It's sadly par for the course for these sorts of services -- they just don't show-up when they say they are going to. When I make an appointment, I have to make special arrangements to be available, and -- yeah -- I do have some expectation that the appointment will be met at least within some reasonable approximation of what was scheduled. The time for my appointment came and went, and I had received absolutely no communication about any issues. So I called the service myself and: `oh, yeah, sorry, looks like we just got really busy this morning...' That's not just bad service, it's an insult -- it's saying `your time and inconvenience are simply not important.' Looks like, from the reviews, that others have had similar experiences. I needed someone to trim the plants in my Japanese garden. John said he had done such gardens, but the one black pine that he did was done incorrectly, and debris was left in the rest of the garden. He spent 4 1/2 hours doing a job that I have learned should have taken 1 1/2 hours, so that trimming that tree was much more expensive than it need to have been. He is very polite and a pleasure to work with, but do not hire him to maintain a Japanese garden. And compare charges per hour. read more

Great crew, fast response, professional, lowest bidder! Had a very mature Pampas grass that was in the process of becoming a new home for the rats displaced when they demolished one of the single family homes nearby to make way for yet another 6 plex of high-end apartments. I wanted it gone ASAP. I had worked with them previously on staking a tree that had partially blown over during a storm and they were great, but I thought they were just tree guys so I contacted a couple of landscapers for the Pampas grass. After meeting with the first company, I learned this project required heavy machinery so I thought I might as well get rid of the tree of heaven that had come with my house and had grown rather large over 10 years of ownership. The other companies were booked out a minimum of three weeks and quoted me quite a bit higher. NW Tree Work got the Pampas and TOH both out of my yard in less than a week after I first contacted them. Left everything tidy. If you've got projects, get them to quote particularly if you're in NoPo. Great experience, could not more highly recommend them! read more

We needed our trees trimmed back before they sprouted for Spring. John was very quick to respond and came out to give us an estimate the next day. A few days later we had the work done. Wow what horrible service. I wish I could comment on their work but they never showed up! John came out and gave a free quote, he was very friendly and knowledgable, he told me he would follow up with an email quote shortly. After not receiving the quote I called to follow up, this happened 2 more times - after I was promised a quote or appointment but I never heard from them. On the third call John confirmed his team would be out the next day and confirmed a time. The next day I waited and waited, but they were a no show. I called a few times and left voicemails but nothing. To make things worse he sent a quote email to me that night with no acknowledgment of the no show or any apology for wasting my time. John from NW Tree Work was referred to me by my neighbor. When he came to provide an estimate to trim our giant ash tree, I approved and he said he would contact me to set up scheduling. I amazed when they could do the job only a few days later. Very professional! They climb without spike shoes, so no damage to the trunk. They were also able to cut some of the further out branches, reducing weight without removing whole limbs. They'll be my go-to tree service for the life of that tree. read more

They gave me an amazing quote and started that very same day. His crew was top notch in their field. We were extremely impressed with the speed of their response. We had contacted multiple tree companies to get bids so we could chose from a few companies for professionalism and prices. NW Tree work responded quickly to schedule a visit, promptly provided a bid, and squeezed the work in within a week. That does not happen often ever when we call companies. Owner John is a knowledgeable, certified arborist who readily provided us an assessment and bid of our 11 cedar trees that have never been trimmed in the 20 years we have owned our home. I don't think I'll be using this service again. I was 'VERY' specific about the tree removal and what was expected as far as where I wanted the chips placed, they got that part right, and where I wanted the rounds put. They did nothing but leave them at the base of the stump and scattered all over my back yard and beds crushing some plants. A crew of 4 men took over 4 hours to take down a 50 year old maple that was severely damaged in the last storm of which a quarter was already removed by a neighbor when a large limb fell in the ally where the tree was. After the gentlemen had finished, the lead asked for the payment and that's when I noticed the mess in my yard. I inquired about it and he said moving the rounds was not on the invoice and would be an extra cost. So I asked for the invoice, that's when I was told he had none, that's unprofessional. So I called the office were I was informed there was no mention of placing the rounds where I wanted. $1125 spent and now I, a 64 YO, have days of clean up and a fence to repair. John came out to evaluate the work needed and explained exactly what they would do and gave us a great little mini course on keeping trees healthy through the the trimming. We have a HUGE maple on the parkway that needed major trimming of dead branches, a broken branch and more. It looks great! We also needed a large Linden tree trimmed to allow for some construction work. Again, a superb job. The other trees trimmed, a Redbud now looks beautiful and the Japanese maple does too. They were on time, professional, very carefull, cleaned up thoroughly and were genuinely nice people. We will use them again and recommend them to others. read more

It was a great pleasure doing business with John and his crew (Ira, Dillon and Mike). They took out one 60-80 year old walnut tree that had died and trimmed back two cherry trees. John and his crew did a great job on my large Cedar tree. We talked in depth about what I needed done and John also provided additional insight into the condition of the tree and some potential issues. His crew arrived on time. They were friendly and made sure I was satisfied with the work before wrapping it up. They raked and used a blower to tidy up the area they had worked in as well as the rooftop and gutter area below where the tree had also been pruned. I was good with quote John gave me. Since I didn't get other bids and I haven't had similar work done I didn't have anything to compare it to but I believe he gave me the best price possible, even adjusting it a little more by setting my appointment up on the same day as a job nearby. The only knock I have, hence the one star ding, is that they may be a victim of their own success. I sent an email requesting an appointment for a quote and hadn't heard back for almost a week when I decided to try him by phone. He was very apologetic, told me they were running behind and was just about to get back to me. He was super nice so we set up a time. Unfortunately the same was true for the follow up email where I was supposed to sign off on agreement to do the work. I called him again because the work was supposed to be done 2 days or so from that date and I wanted to get it locked in. I got the email shortly thereafter and we were a go. I was determined to use John's services because of the positive reviews and because I try to support local businesses as much as possible, so I took the extra time to connect with John. Someone else may not be so determined and move on to another company. I would hate to see NW Tree Work lose business because of something like that. read more
