She takes a holistic approach to health care, instead of just treating symptoms. She listens to me. Yes, you read that right. I wish all providers were like her. She takes the time to make sure that all of the important things get addressed. I actually look forward to my appointments. Oh, this review isn't just for Dr. Drzymalski, but for the whole clinic. I forgot their names, but the intake assistant and the phlebotomist were both nice, friendly, professional, and efficient. I would recommend Perlman Clinic to anyone. P.S. Months ago, my partner was suffering some food poisoning. Having recently had good experience from my doctor, as I previously stated, I recommend this clinic. When we arrived the place was completely empty. We asked the front desk technician if they accept walk-ins. This questions was SUPPOSED to be superfluous, as I KNOW they are available for walk-ins but to my surprise the technician, a woman of African American decent and (ironically) wearing a pride flag pin informed us that this clinic does not take walk ins. My partner is very shy in nature, quiet. They put on a brave face despite wanting- at the time, to puke everywhere on the floor. Like most women of color, they are naturally conditioned to be as calm and collected as possible despite the pain, in order to be taken seriously by medical staff. I would have assumed this technician in particular may have some understanding of that. But instead i assume she thought "oh they don't look so bad" and felt comfortable to outwardly deny us their walk-in service for the sake of their schedule. I for a period of time, was also a technician for a clinic. I can understand how potentially stressful, as an employee, it is when a patient walks in instead of making an appointment. And to that I say, it's your job get a grip. It was so completely unethical and inhumane to straight up lie to us. I had to drive my partner in downtown traffic for 20 f*cking minutes so they could see us at SHARP. I felt so bad that my partner had to hold on for that long because of your ill-trained staff. I was so pissed that on the very same day I called this same North Park location and acted dumb and asked in a super nice voice "Do you guys take walk ins?" Tell me why the tech (WHO HONESTLY SOUNDED LIKE THE ONE THAT DENIED US EARLIER IM ALMOST CERTAIN) says "Yes !". Immediately I saw red, this terrible terrible person who should not be working for a job where you're SUPPOSED HELP OTHER HUMANS. Felt so comfortable to be prejudice and accept only those she thinks are worth her time! After that I confronted her and asked why we were denied earlier then, immediately and I mean immediately she put me on hold. Probably to find some time to make up a sorry excuse. I hung up shortly after. I'm going to add a picture here where it shows their official website stating they accept walk ins even though they ~prefer~ appointment- whatever as if anyone can control when it's time to get sick or not. I truly hope the Perlman staff gets some time to look at their core values and see where they need some work in. I suggest practicing human empathy and kindness first.

The website was easy to navigate with the option to walk-in or schedule an appointment. I opted to schedule an appointment in two hours. The appointment scheduling system was a breeze and very user friendly. I saved a bunch of time uploading my Driver's License, Insurance Card and filling out all my information. I received text and email updates. I arrived 30 minutes before my appointment and the receptionist was friendly and checked me in, even though there was a QR code to scan for self-check. The waiting room was 75% full, so I opted to sit near the door one seat away from other patients on either side. While waiting there was a steady flow of patients coming and going. What I disliked was when a new patient sat right next to me when there was a row of three empty seats. I feel like it's just good manners to sit far apart when possible. Nurse Ashley took me back to check my vitals 8 minutes after my schedule appointment. Instead of measuring my height and weight she asked me. She did take my blood pressure, pulse and temperature. She brought me back to wait in a treatment room. After 15-20 minutes she came back to inform me that I will be seen by a provider shortly and thank you for waiting. I made myself comfy in the armchair. It was probably another 30 minutes before Dr. MacKenzie came in. She asked a few questions, took a look at me, gave me her diagnosis but wanted a second opinion and asked me to wait a little longer. Another doctor came in, asked some questions, looked at me and felt my eyes, gave the same diagnosis and departed. Dr. MacKenzie explained the diagnosis, prescribed a steroid, antihistamine and topic ointment. These were all ready for me before I arrived at my preferred pharmacy. What I appreciated the most was her level of care. I respected that she took time to get a second opinion and thoroughly explained everything to me and answered all my questions. While it's never fun to go to the hospital, she eased my anxiety for sure. I highly recommend this location for urgent care needs and hope that you are lucky to get Dr. MacKenzie.

I have never had a healthcare experience this frustrating or dehumanizing…read more On August 13, 2026, I contacted Family Health Centers of San Diego because I needed to establish primary care and obtain a referral to a nutritionist at the recommendation of my psychologist-therapist. I was scheduled to see Donald Beeler, NP at Hillcrest Family Health Center on August 20. Before that appointment, however, I was contacted by the scheduling team and told that Beeler was a temporary provider who was not accepting long-term primary care patients. I was therefore rescheduled with Dr. Margaretta Gergen for September 29--over a month later. Then, shortly before that appointment, I was contacted again and told that Dr. Gergen was not accepting patients either. I was rescheduled for October 1 with Dr. Gerald Coronado. Today, October 1, I arrived at Hillcrest Family Health Center with my paperwork and having already completed the electronic check-in. I spoke with the front desk at 10:58 AM. I was told that my appointment was scheduled for 10:50 AM and that I was considered late. I was also told that Dr. Coronado may have taken a walk-in patient because of this. I was surprised that there apparently was no grace period, but I accepted that and told them I was happy to wait. So I waited. For more than 40 minutes. At approximately 11:40 AM, the front desk called me over and informed me that Dr. Coronado could not actually see me because he was a temporary provider at the location and was not accepting primary care patients. In other words, after spending weeks waiting for this appointment, arriving at the clinic, completing my check-in, and sitting in the waiting room for over 40 minutes, I was once again told that the appointment could not happen because of an issue with the provider's availability that apparently should have been known before I was scheduled with him. The front desk staff member did explain that Dr. Coronado could see me for an immediate issue, but not establish me as a regular primary care patient. I asked to speak with a supervisor, Marina. While Marina was making calls to try to figure out what could be done, a security guard came upstairs and began watching me and monitoring my reaction. I was not threatening anyone, causing a disturbance, or behaving aggressively. I was simply a patient who had just been told, after waiting over 40 minutes, that I could not be seen. To be fair, the front office staff did acknowledge and apologize for the repeated scheduling problems I had experienced. I was also told that Hillcrest FHC is a training site where many resident physicians and temporary providers work for limited periods rather than serving as long-term primary care providers. If that is the case, patients should be informed of that BEFORE they are scheduled--not after they have waited weeks for an appointment. The one genuinely positive part of this experience was Assistant Director Rosa Sandoval. After I asked for help, she came upstairs, personally spoke with me, and took me to her office. She apologized profusely and told me that she did not want my first experience with Hillcrest FHC to reflect the clinic's standards. She asked what she could do to make the situation right and said she would speak with her team so that this would not happen to future patients. I appreciated her taking the time to listen and take responsibility for the situation. Unfortunately, the solution still means waiting even longer. I told Ms. Sandoval that I was willing to see ANY primary care provider anywhere in San Diego County if it meant finally being established with a doctor rather than repeatedly being pushed toward urgent care or the emergency room. She found me an appointment with their new hire, Dr. Stephen Rueda, on October 20--three more weeks from now. I was willing to go anywhere in the county to be seen sooner, but I was encouraged to remain with Hillcrest FHC. That means I will have waited more than two months from my original request on August 13 simply to establish primary care. I understand that healthcare systems are complicated, providers change, and scheduling mistakes happen. What is unacceptable is the cumulative effect of repeatedly making the patient absorb those mistakes. I did everything I was asked to do. I called when instructed, accepted multiple rescheduled appointments, completed my paperwork and electronic check-in, arrived at the clinic, waited patiently, and was still turned away because of circumstances that were apparently known or foreseeable to the clinic. Patients' time matters. Patients' trust matters. And when someone is actively trying to establish consistent primary care, repeatedly telling them to wait weeks or months and then informing them at the last minute that the provider cannot actually take them as a patient is incredibly discouraging. I sincerely hope Hillcrest Family Health Center addresses its scheduling and provider-assignment practices.
