Compared to other Markham's Community Centre this is the worse of them all facilities wise. The equipment here: mats, dumb bells are all so dirty! Then I found out that Crosby was "opened in 1928 with an arena pad with a sand floor base and four dressing rooms. In 1959 the sand floor was converted to concrete. Additions were made to the arena in 1962 and 1971, and in 1974 seating was added." 1928!!! Even the newest additional was added in 1974..... The only good thing about coming to Crosby is it is right inside Old Unionville. Ended up a lot of the participates ended up coming to the various coffee shops and cafes after their practise sessions!

The community center was big and included many different sports, even the hockey game. There was a separate building for Tennis too. There were 2 big swimming pools. One for adults and one for kids. The kids pool is warmer than the adult one. There is a massage pool on the side corner. Parent can view onsite. We live a bit far away, but the schedule for parent and tod is pretty good here. We like to come here.

The town's hockey office is here too, right behind the spectators seats of the main ice pad. The main rink has enough seats to host a Jr A or an OHL game. Alas, there is no JrA or OHL team in Richmond Hill. Hence these seats probably never get warm. The way this rink is built, the pillars and columns supporting the roof may block the view for those sitting the upper rows, which is a minus. That's just the way they used to build rinks bank in the day. The arena is warmer than most yet the ice is of decent quality. They have recently renovated the entire arena and the rink has received a sound proofing upgrade. Now it's not as echoey and noisy as before. The secondary rink has only a couple of small benches for the spectators. You can also watch the game or the practice through the glass from the hallway upstairs. The snack shop is usually open and offers coffee, tea and a limited variety of snacks. The pro shop is hardly ever works. At least I have not seen it open in a long while. There is one or two party rooms that are frequently booked for birthdays and other events. There are a few parking spots near the main entrance. There is a time limit there and the town is quick to write a ticket (don't ask me how I know LOL). There is a huge parking lot behind the building, in between the arena and the baseball diamond. And even more parking across the street.

A moment of nostalgia overcame me when, during a random yelp search, I came across this Yelp…read morelisting. As a kid growing up in Richmond Hill, this was minor league hockey Mecca. I can still recall getting my house league hockey assignments in novice and atom and knowing that the games would be in either Elgin Mills East or Elgin Mills west arena. As mentioned already, one side is definitely meant for the likes of a junior team, a seemingly larger ice surface, and tons of seating (far more than a gang of parents huddled together watching a 6am practice can fill). Having a game here as a youngster was like being drafter and playing in the NHL. The other side (much smaller) was meant for younger teams, house league, summer hockey, etc. While the spectator areas were limited, the best seats in the house were from the enclosed viewing deck above. Funny story about the latter, I was once playing goalie in house league and had been just told about the aggressive style of play of the once great Ron Hextal... I took the story far too literally and leveled a kid on the other team with an unsuspecting goalie paddle to the back. Ohhhh boy. Somehow I avoided getting into trouble Ha ha. But you can be the didn't come near MY crease ever again. Glad to hear it's received some much needed renovations as even playing here as a 7-10 year old in the early '90s I could tell the place needed work. But it was home, it's where I got my start and if I'm lucky enough to have kids one day, I'd love to see them play here one day (even if it's just a visiting game). Also parking, parking, parking. On the occasion I meet up with Friends on Friday evenings for skating, this is it. Reason aside from the above, is the scheduling of their Friday night skate. Public Skate 7:30 - 9pm Adult Skate 9:15 - 10:45pm The two skate times are in two different arenas but considering the combination, a three-hour skate is more than satisfying. The cost of such a facility is the popularity, too much of a crowd during Public Skate althought Adult Skate is more than comfortable but the Adult Skate doesn't have boards for those beginner Adults. There is an asham store inside the club in case you need to buy gear. The ice Shed boasts 6 lanes. The instructors at the club are well educated and extremely experienced. The club offers affordable rates for curling and many leagues to participate in. Max is the assistant coordinator at the club and has been a pleasure to work with while coordinating a Corporate Bonspiel. If you have not had the chance to try curling before, definitely consider a learn to curl session here!

For $20 (deal with groupon, usually its more expensive if you join their league) we had the entire rink for 2 hours, and played four lengths. I'm a beginner curler and I had a great time and want to go back to give it a try. If you don't know the rules for curling, look it up, and give it a try. Its not the most exciting game, but it definitely is a social game, and will allow you to meet some new people. Just remember to dress up as its cold out there, and wear shoes that are clean, otherwise you mark up the ice.

*** Avoid Skate Sharpening Booth ***…read more The lady who smokes did a terrible job sharpening my new skates. I had to get them re-sharpened at SportChek for $7 (16 and Woodbine) where they had to re-sharpened my blades. The staff was surprised at how terrible they were considering I had purchased them this year. Skate rental is available but I'd recommend just saving up and buying your own (even used in kijiji) skates. I'd be weary on those rental skates given how terrible the lady screwed up my blades. *** Indoor area not available *** Due to the pandemic, the small indoor area is closed off to the public. So you'll need to change your skates outdoors on the wooden benches. Occasionally there is a staff there but this rink is mostly unsupervised. You're not supposed to be figure skating / practicing hockey moves, but no one is there to enforce it. *** Environment *** The stairs to get to the rink are poorly lit. There's currently a Christmas tree at the entrance but the stairs are not lit at all. They need to fix the lamppost or install new lights bc it's dark enough you can't see people when going down the stairs and might hit / step on a kid playing in the area. There are no lockers / storage available so be sure to travel light and leave your bulkier items in the car. No access to heating area or washrooms. The theatre next door may be open but not sure about welcoming guests to use the facility. Best to drive across the plaza to the washrooms at a restaurant like McDonalds. *** Skating Rink *** Rubber floor mats are limited facing the side of the Civic Centre building where the benches are located to change. It would be better if mats were expanded all around the rink along with additional benches. This would help reduce the crowding and close contact of others during this pandemic. Shaped more like an oval than a circle or rectangle, it's a decent size for skating when it's not too busy. I do find the ice to be uneven / dented / marked up even after the zambino has cleaned the ice. During the evenings, lights are available along with dated 2000s music on repeat. I've been coming here for years and it's still the same, so of course I'd be bored of the music. Bring your earphones to keep yourself entertained.

It's the only restaurant at this sports complex that operates separately from the concessions stands at the complex itself. This sports centre is Canada's largest municipally owned and operated recreation facility. It's huge, as it houses six arenas. Many hockey teams are here to practise and play, including the Whitby Wildcats. It also has two indoor pools. BarDown Gastropub is great if you want to grab a bite to eat before or after a game. Our group wasn't here for sports, so it works for lunch and dinner. The food is excellent. It also houses the largest screen in Whitby to see the latest sports games. Since the City of Whitby owns this property, it has a contract with Pepsi. You get Pepsi products at concession stands, vending machines, and BarDown Gastropub. There are banquet and meeting rooms that you can rent. It also has a pro shop to get your skates sharpened and athletic training facilities. When it's warmer outside, this place has six tennis courts, five baseball diamonds, and a soccer field open. It's huge here. There is lots of parking. It's free. I was here with friends on a Sunday afternoon. This sports complex is open every day from 8:30 am till roughly 8:30 pm. If you have a water bottle, you can fill it up at the water bottle fill-up station. It was nice checking this place out briefly. It's cool and a valuable asset to Whitby and beyond. (79)

I enrolled my 6 year old son in 2 programs at NTR. The power skating program was pathetic. The…read moreratio was at least 6 kids to one coach. However, only one coach was coaching. He would demonstrate a drill and then the kids would follow. The other coaches merely skated back and forth, from one end to the other in silence. Any coach knows this is not an effective way to teach young kids, as they do not gain knowledge from a monkey see, monkey do platform. I also registered him for the 3 on 3 house league. This was an absolute disaster. There were four teams and two of those teams were select super teams. Those two teams dominated while the teams with single registrants floundered. Goalies were consistently absent. Players were consistently absent. Stereotypical crazy hockey parents were prevalent on the benches using foul language and denigrating small children for their play. On more than one occasion there were more than 5 parents behind benches when all you needed was two to manage the doors. NTR management did not care. This place is exactly what hockey Canada is trying to reign in. It is the Wild West of minor hockey.
