Worsley Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club - The non junior suite they gave us for night 1

Worsley Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club

I really wanted to love this place, as it was the hotel we stayed the longest at on our trip to the…read moreUK, but the first interaction at checkin was so off putting that I can't unfocus to see the big picture of our stay. To start, we did talk with the manager who was kind and accommodating and every staff member following was incredibly nice, but our check in person really colored the rest of our visit for us. We are platinum members of Marriott so as part of our membership, we have 5 nights to be used to upgrade the room we book, at the discretion of the hotel if they have it available. I had used 4 of my upgrades and additionally booked a junior suite because both me and my partner had to work and we needed the separate spaces. Worsley Park sent me a confirmation 3 days before our arrival that they accepted my use and that I would have an upgraded room. When we get to our room, it is absolutely not an upgraded room. Though they took my upgrade credits, we were in a normal standard room. I watched on my app as it showed I was supposed to be in a junior suite, downgraded to standard room after calling the front desk to see why we weren't in a junior suite. The man was incredibly rude and condescending. He told us he'd tell his manager and would call us from the room we were in to sort it out. It felt wrong to me to dirty up a room when we booked a junior and also had used my upgrade credits to ensure the larger room so after about 40 minutes of waiting, both of us starving from our 27 hour trip, and still not hearing from the manager, we went down to reception. The man was scowling at us, rudely telling us to just go back to our rooms. Just then, the manager walked up, listened to what happened, apologized, and told us we would be in a junior suite the following day and that the one upgrade credit that wouldn't be used that night would be returned to my account. It still has not. Every time we walked by reception, I'd see the man literally evil eyeing us as I smiled and waved. I cannot say I'd recommend a place that has such rude staff and the fact that when we first got in the rooms, there was random hair everywhere. Go anywhere else.

The staff are all awesome - always on hand to help and very courteous, but in a distinctly northern down-to-earth way which makes the place feel really welcoming (ie. not too posh!). The restaurant is always awesome - myself and wife #1 got married there 3 years ago (...at the hotel, not in the restaurant - we like food, but not that much...) and people still talk about the food and entertainment. We went back last night to celebrate not killing each other for 3 years and the Crayfish soup leapt out as the choice for me on the menu. If you do nothing else this year, visit this hotel and have the crayfish soup. Utterly, utterly amazing - by far the best soup I've ever had in my life. I had to point towards the other side of the room and shout "Look, the Nolan sisters!" to distract everyone while I licked the bowl clean. Oh, I forgot to mention the Sticky Toffee Pudding - add that to your to-eat list as well :)

I rarely get it blue. So far the only places I've eaten that are happy to cook it that way are The Grill on The Alley and The Grill on New York Street. Until last night..... The White Horse is our local pub, just five minutes walk down the road and my other half and I have been in a couple of times since its refurb for a couple of drinks. Its a lovely homely pub with alcoves off and although open plan it feels like an old country local. Yes the decor and furniture is all new but it doesn't feel sterile and lacking personality like some do when they've been done up. Its a really lovely atmosphere in there. There was a football match being played on the various TV screens and a quiz after the football so it was understandably busy for a Tuesday night. For me that just added to the atmosphere. My better half likes it as it serves cask real ales, some from local breweries too, a nice selection with little samples on each pump so you can see the colour and clarity of each ale. A nice touch. The menu itself is lovely, from classics like cod and chips to orzo pasta salad and sharer plates. I fancied rump steak and my fella had Hunters chicken. Despite how busy the place was it didn't take long for the food to arrive. The steak I had was a lovely thick piece that I was surprised to see had been cooked blue to perfection. Melt in the mouth, tasty and juicy. In fact my tastebuds are tingling now just thinking about it! The hunters chicken looked and smelled good too, and was very good according to him indoors! We also had a pud each, millionaires cheesecake and profiteroles which were both absolutely divine. Profiteroles were coated in chocolate and filled with hazelnut cream, a nice twist on a classic dessert. All in all a really beautiful meal, the quality of the food is excellent, the prices reasonable, and the staff are friendly and gave exceptional service, especially given how busy it was. I'm pretty sure we'll be eating there more often, it really is a gem of a place.

It is a relatively quiet hotel, well out of the way, so do some research on public transport but preferably have your own. The rooms were spacious, neat and comfortable. Oddly enough, the toilet was separate from the shower and sink, which was a bit strange but in truth quite handy for us sharing a room. Dinner was included for both nights of our stay. I passed up on the mushroom soup starter and had battered cod and a load of veg on the first night, couldn't have asked for anything better. Good grub. Turkey dinner with veg and creamy potatoes on the second night preceded by the nicest minestrone soup I have ever had. Breakkie? Divine. Anything that you could want. A fry, cereal, nuts, seeds, fruit, croissants, pain au chocolate, coffee, tea, etc. lovely breakfast! The staff were helpful and courteous. The prices are reasonable. The stadium is close (£15 in a taxi - not a black cab) all round good experience.

We were told that there was no other room available at the Novotel but that they had made a reservation for us at another hotel, we were given directions to the hotel and sent on our way. When we arrived at the other hotel, we were told that Novotel had NOT made a reservation for us and that there were no rooms available. We called back to Novotel and Aaron informed us that the hotel was overbooked and there was no flooded rooms and there was nothing he could do about our reservation. We ended up spending the night on the floor of the airport because there we no rooms available in Manchester that night and Novotel still had the nerve to charge us for the room.
