He donated the land and money with the mission of bringing a higher education institution to the growing South Florida community. The college adopted the nickname Hurricanes in memory of the devastating 1926 storm that hit the area just as the university opened. After the land boom bust the college struggled but it experienced significant growth after WWII. Their football program boosted them to national prominence leading to academic expansion. and they celebrated their 100 year anniversary last year. The University of Miami spans 240 acres on the main Coral Gables campus. It has a strong albeit expensive academic program including a medical school. Their colors are orange, green, and white representing Florida's citrus industry. The mascot is Sebastian the Ibis. The campus is park like with large trees, the man made Osceola lake from the 1940's in the center, and 1920's architecture with the oolite limestone Coral Gables is known for. I have visited the Lowe's Art Museum on campus and the Gifford Arboretum in the past and most recently I came for the Beaux arts Festival now in it's 75th year. Now could not be a better time to visit since UM is in the College Football Playoff National Championship against the Indiana Hoosiers. They have won five football championships since 1983 and we are hoping for number six. To make the famous UM hand gesture hold up your hands in front of you palms out and put your thumbs so they are touching and your hands form a U shape. UM fever has spread throughout the entire city of Miami with events happening in conjunction with the big game all weekend long. The highly anticipated game takes place Monday night. Go Canes!

The place is far if you live in north Dade County. I thought I was on my way to the Keys, LOLLLL. However, it is WORTH the drive! John was our instructor for the BLS/ACLS skills and he is the TRUTH!! A wealth of knowledge and he makes you feel comfortable and confident in your knowledge and skills. So, I am unsure if you have a choice to pick your instructor. If you do, you can't go wrong with John. This place is clean and plenty of room to practice your skills. It was only 4 people in my class. So, I can appreciate the small class size because it allows you ample time to review, asks questions, and practice your skills. I cannot recommend this place enough! Clean facility and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Once you complete your skills and testing, they will offer to print your card(s); if you would like. Today my daughter went for the second time this year to have her SAT test here at this location…read more The parking was good and organization outside the testing area was fine. They were making a line, everyone wearing a mask, and they were keeping distance. But as my daughter told me, they didn't have enough space between each student inside as they were testing. Which for now since we are on the Covid situation, they should have taking this into consideration and have more space and distance between each student they were testing for over four hours.
