It's never very crowded (maybe other people aren't as into it as I am??) which is a nice change from the Portland grocery stores. Although I did stop in once around lunch time and there was a line for the salad bar, but if you're in the area around lunch you should really just head around the corner to Taco Trio anyway. The store is pretty clean and well-stocked with your typical grocery store items. A few things I like about Shaw's stores, in general: - Shaw's also doubles coupons up to $1.00 if you're into saving money (if you're not you should be, who doesn't like cheap food?). - While we're talking saving money, most Shaw's have a corner of their produce section where they reduce prices on fruits and veggies that are past their prime or otherwise not perfect. This can make for some good deals if you don't mind searching for things you'll use before they go bad. - Shaw's also sells bottled Argo Tea, a product that is near and dear to my heart.

So when I'm coming home from the beach, it's super easy to stop by and pick-up whatever specialty thing I'm looking for (pro tip: when a limited edition flavor of a brand you love is sold out at other stores or online... this Shaws tends to have it because no one's looking for it here). There's still some big issues here: 1. The parking lot is terrible. 2. Randomly you'll come across a completely empty shelf. 3. It's not the best looking fruits and veg. 4. The store needs a deep clean. 5. The customer service can be hit or miss. 6. The self check-out kiosks aren't as seamless an experience as Hannaford. But still... that vegan section in the freezer has a lot going on!

I love that with this Lois location, they have their own parking and a cafe where you can actually see what they are serving. Just a note: some kombuchas require you to show your ID at checkout... but also note, you will and cannot get inebriated by kombucha....

While there is more of a selection here for me, I wish the pre-made items had better labeling. I can't buy any of the baked goods because the labeling is insufficient. The produce selection is limited, but when I'm here I try to pick something up because I love buying local when I can. Some plusses is that Lois carries safe eggs and yogurt for me. It's the only place I've found safe eggs in the local area, so that makes me happy. On Mondays and Thursdays they usually have bread delivered from bread and friends in Portland, which is great. Wednesdays they do a senior discount. Due to the small size and selection, I usually have to go to another store to finish my shopping when I come here. But I'm happy it's here and am a consistent repeat customer.

Regarding the customer service: I've had some really weird interactions here (one cashier tried to make me feel badly for having colored hair and told me how I was contributing to the destruction of the environment [my hair dye is actually vegan, non-toxic, and paraben free]), I've also had some really helpful interactions here when I had questions about the aromatherapy and Ayurvedic properties in something. So, in my experience, it's been difficult to read the overall vibe of the people who work here. I wouldn't go out of my way to drive here from Portland for anything in particular, however recently a product that I really loved at Whole Foods suddenly disappeared off the shelves. Every employee I asked about it said they had "never heard of it before" (side note: I've been buying this product every week for three or four years now). So I put in an order for a case of it; a week later Whole Foods called me back to say that this item was no longer being manufactured. Enter Royal River. Knowing they also carry this particular product (the only place I recall seeing it at recently) I call and put in a special order. Two days later they call me back saying my case is available for pick up (and I get a 10% discount for buying a whole case too!). I don't know if this product will or won't be around in the future, but I gotta give a virtual high five to RRNF for coming through on this one!

Parking lot is not huge, which makes sense for the size of the store. It's very accessible to all. Easy check out - don't forget to bring your bags.
