I was in search of a new way of getting into shape, as I was getting no where with the tradition gym environment. I decided to try World MMA's Nak Muay gym as I was looking for a teaching pedigree where you can trace the lineage of instruction as well as find an environment I would feel comfortable to train. I was impressed to find that Eric Karner was a "Kru" (teacher) in Muy Thai having lived and fought in Thailand and Tim Carpenter, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Judo champion, and Bellator MMA fighter. Being marginally athletic, (I did play sports through HS and College, but no great shakes at any of them) old 39, and overweight about 275+ pounds I was concerned. But I decided to go for it, and starting up was challenging, I felt out of place and uncomfortable. I think the coaching staff sensed this and really worked to make me feel comfortable and pushed me to do my best at each class (first muay thai and eventually jiu jitsu). Over time I increasingly became more comfortable, and asked more questions and received a lot of support on the mental aspects of training, diet/nutrition from the coaching staff. As time went by, my weight changed and my mental development improved, so much so, that with the support of the coaching staff, I competed in my first grappling tournament in 2012. This was an incredible experience, I had not competed in an athletic event in almost 20 years and I was nervous as hell. What made this incredible is that the people I trained with showed up (Matt/Cynthia) and had a coach show up to support and provide guidance during the event (Bill Alegeo). Even though I lost, the amount of support I received on that Saturday got me hooked on competing and developed a deep respect for the gym coaching staff and my teammates. Since that event, 2 years have passed, I have lost 75+ pounds, and just finished my 5th tournament (4th in 2013), and took silver in a large grappling competition. Some of my best teammates have moved on to become part of the coaching staff training program and are a constant source of guidance / support on and off the mat. There are a lot of gyms out there, what makes this one unique is the coaching staff and the people they allow in to train. At the top are two professional fighters who have hand picked a coaching staff to create an environment where the non-athlete can come to train.They will help you with anything you are looking to gain from the environment, everything from diet to gym hygiene. The only parting words I can provide about World MMA is that they provide the guidance, you must supply the effort. Sorry, one note after reading a post about pricing/billing of the gym. Like almost anything you purchase in life from a cell phone to a car, there is a contract, read it before you sign. These guys are up front and not looking to pull a fast one on you, they are just trying to make a living like the rest of us. read more

I am a female 46 year old student of Nak Muay Gym for 7 plus years now. I have to say, there isn't anywhere I would rather train! I have met so many amazing people by going to BOTH of their locations. Not only do they have a "true" Kru of Muay Thai (Kru Eric Karner) they also have Pro MMA fighter Tim Carpenter that teaches BJJ. Several of their team of coaches are also pro and amateur fighters. Students can grow here because they have the proper guidance from experienced mentors of the the martial arts of Muay Thai and BJJ. Both, myself and my daughter(21years old) have followed this gym to each location over the years as it grew and grew. I have no regrets and I hope to be a very old lady still training Muay Thai at Nak Muay Gym...and maybe I will someday be their greeter to new students when I am totally unable to train..kinda like a Walmart greeter..haha. That is how loyal I am to this gym. nam Muay Gym is a "serious" gym for learning Muay Thai. You won't just hit pads here. I only take Muay Thai. And at Nak Muay Gym it is the "true Thai" style Muay Thai. There are levels from beginner to advanced. As you grow, Kru Eric will become more and more technical, I always compare it to being a classical musician(I once was) because you have to still do scales over and over no matter what level of a musician you are...and that is just like MUAY Thai at Nak Muay Gym ..you will do the same combinations over and over at times but you do so to until they are perfected. And then...you do them again! I have so much respect for the instruction at this gym. I recommend any and everyone to come here. Even if you tried another gym and wasn't growing. I love this gym! I do the MMA program which consists of both BJJ and Muay Thai. When I came in for a tour I was happy from the start. The facility was clean, and the class that was in progress was WORKING!! After the tour and fitness assessment, I sat down in the office to talk about the administrative stuff. Everything was thoroughly laid out, and explained to me. Membership prices, including the incentives for each option, and the policies that also need to be met to guarantee the aforementioned incentives. I pay exactly what I agreed to pay. I payed attention, and have had no "suprises.".... Now on to the good stuff The training is fantastic! The instructors are thorough, and they pay attention to everyone. There are numerous pro fighters who train, and instruct here. Not that I personally care about this next point, but they are all very personable and courteous. There are no bad attitudes at this gym. Everyone strives for the same goals together. From a brand new BJJ white belt through to black belts. From a new Muay Thai student whose never thrown a knee or elblow all the way through a Kru. You are training with your experience level. You aren't forced to do what you're not ready to. So whether you want to simply get into better shape, learn some self defense or a martial art, or get into MMA..... This gym is a fantastic place to not only begin your journey, but also see it all the way through. read more

I haven't actually signed up for the program yet because I'm trying to decide if I can pay for the program. But I saw these other comments and thought it worth mentioning that I went in for a consultation yesterday and talked with Bill about what they offer, and what I might like. I met Diana and she's pretty nice! I kind of feel bad for her with having to deal with guys like these /\/\/\. Anyway at the end of my consultation, Bill (also a really chill guy) talked to my dad and I about the payment options. The second payment plan does give you the option to get a refund at the end of the two months, but you need to be in attendance for twice a week for the two month period. Just felt like i should clear that up. They have a lot of cool thai stuff in their space from the owner visiting and training in thailand. And all of the associates are real relaxed. I got to see the start of a promotion class, which is kind of complicated but basically you have the opportunity to raise your rank. All the guys were suiting up by wrapping their hands and getting warmed up as I was leaving. In the end I really liked what they have going there, I'm thinking I'm going to try to do the second option with the 2-month refund possibility to see how hard it is on my schedule. I went here for 6-7 months and it was the worst experience of my life. These people aren't kidding when they say they'll "Change Your Life Forever." The head trainer told me in crude language to perform oral sex on him more than once, and they claimed my wife was cheating on me. They dismissed me from the gym, and one of the instructors threatened me in writing that he would follow me wherever I went and ruin my reputation with my new Coach. I tried to report it and the cops not only sided with them, but I received a ticket for harassment. The Upper Macungie Police department does not have internal affairs. The state police claimed it wasn't their jurisdiction (even though I asked, "isn't the state of Pennsylvania your jurisdiction"), and the FBI told me to have a nice day and hung up. I don't believe in the justice system anymore. On top of all that, their fighters' records are not very good, and they have a warranted reputation of being soft. I didn't have any martial art experience, and I was feared there. The chief trainer also tried to trick me into committing a crime with an underage girl, and committing an act of infidelity against my wife many times in order to damage my credibility and reputation. read more

I love this place, first let me start by saying I had visited a few gyms before landing at Nak Muay, I felt right at home when I met with Coach Bill. He walked me thru the entire gym and did consultation. He was very adamant on finding out why I wanted to take these classes, He said we want to train people who want to learn for the right reasons, respect and admiration for the arts, not someone who wants to learn and go out on the street and beat people up. I thought that was great, this is not a meathead gym with a bunch of wanna be MMA guys. The instructors and students all have a profound respect for each other and the sport . Everyone is super friendly and all the instructors work with you to help you improve. I signed up for Muy Thai and BJJ but have fell in love with Muy Thai so I am concentrating on that for now . The classes go by so fast but the amount of learning and conditioning that goes into each 60 minute class is unbelievable. Coach Joe is a great teacher and works with everyone whether you are a beginner or advanced level. Joining this Gym was one of the best decesions I have made in a long time. read more

Nak Muay Gym has been awesome! I have been training in Muay Thai since July 2011. (coming up on a year and a half). I will admit that I was very intimidated when I first went in to talk to Kru Eric. My first impression was that the gym was way out of my league. I quickly learned that they specialize in training beginners, as well as experienced fighters. I have found the trainers to be helpful, patient, consistent, and extremely knowledgeable. They pay close attention, and really help you refine your technique. After my first year there, I am now in Golden Gloves, and joined the BJJ program as well. I also competed in my first BJJ tournament (or any fighting tournament at that) in my life. Not only have the instructors been helpful, but the other students, and fighters that train there are always willing to offer training advice. Great group of instructors, and a great group of students. I almost passed by this opportunity because I felt I was just too old, and that I would not be able to swing it. I will be 40 next year. MAN, am I glad I just went for it. Give these guys a shot. You won't regret it! read more

Nak muay gym is the place to be whether you are a serious martial artist or just trying to get into better shape. I started training almost two years ago, and it is safe to say I'm in much better condition mentally and physically than I was before I joined nak muay. All of the classes are fun, whether its the cardio kickboxing, Muay Thai, or Jiu jitsu, every class is a good time. In addition to it being a world class training center for beginners or pros, nak muay is also a great social environment. Everyone is super friendly and it's very easy to make friends, especially with so many like minded people around. Finally, the coaching staff is great. It consists of several different very experienced martial artists, who focus on making you as a student, a better martial artist. Everyone at nak muay is willing to help each other out and in turn help each other get better on and off the mats. I've been going to this gym for over a year and definitely would recommend it to anyone looking to take up martial arts, whether you want to train to fight, or just get a good workout in. The coaches are all very knowledgable, and always professional. Most of the coaches also fight regularly at local events, and its always fun to go and meet up with your fellow students and watch the coaches perform. As with any online review website, please take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. These are individual accounst and I've never personally experienced anything like what has been written by Shai during the entire 1+ year that I've been here. I've always found Diana to be nothing less than professional and, in my opinion, she doesnt deserve to have her name slandered on here by a few disgruntled (and from what I can tell, uninformed) people. read more

I've been attending the Academy for 7 months now and it has been great. I used to be a collegiate athlete. Since I graduated and began working its been hard to find the motivation and time for me to continue working out. I found the gym online set up an appointment went to my free trial class, and I haven't looked back. The instructors are very hands on. The conditioning is insane. If you're looking for something to take the edge of, looking to get in shape and meet some cool people then Nak Muy Gym is right for you. Additionally if you have any financial discrepancy the representatives are more then willing to accommodate you. My bank was charged incorrectly on two occasion because of miss communications. I received to free months. So again if you want a bang for your buck NAK MUAY is the place for you. read more

I started at Nak Muay to give my life a change of pace and get back in to shape. I enrolled in the MMA program doing Muay Thai and Brizilian Jiu Jitsu. Between the camaraderie and the coaching at Nak Muay I have grown mentally and have been dropping weight since the day I signed up. The team work atmosphere is the biggest reason I have been able to grow the way I have. More advance students give tips and pointers to beginner students and the coaches are there every step of the way to make sure you get the instruction on every technique to ensure you really understand it. I have had an absolutely wonderful experience at Nak Mauy Gym. This is a great place to study martial arts, for those that truly have a passion for the sport. The coaches are fantastic! They are what really make this gym great. They make you feel like family, while always pushing you to your full potential. I have practiced other martial arts in the past, but I had no experience with Muay Thai when I first came to Nak Muay. Now I feel stronger and more confident with each session. I've been at Nak Muay Gym for 3 years this upcoming May. I have my blue belt in jiujitsu and purple prajiet in Muay Thai. I can honestly say this gym has changed my life around. I wasn't a strong person physically or mentally. Not only did this gym give me the opportunity to become stronger, it helped me find a clearer path where I once felt like my life was less filling. The coaches here gives you direction, techniques of the martial art, and a sense of brotherhood. It is ultimately up to yourself to absorb as much as you can from everything they teach you. I spent years at different gyms, with different "stand up" or striking instructors, and was also a member of the Penn State boxing team when I started at Nak Muay. I realized in the first 15 minutes I was not as talented as I thought I was. The Muay Thai is second to none. They teach everyone from the absolute first day to guys you'll see on TV. Not only are the instructors awesome, but also the students. I have met some very cool people I would not have met otherwise, and made some lasting memories. Not only is Nak Muay the cleanest gym I have ever been apart of (Ive trained in several gyms all over the world), but it also one of the biggest. Nak Muay Gym is first class! The facility is clean and well-maintained. The instructors are awesome, from professional fighters to practitioners that are passionate about martial arts. This is a serious gym, but the atmosphere is friendly and fun. I and members of my family train at Nak Muay in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and receive great instruction by true professionals. The jiu jitsu teaching is fantastic, including a great beginner program, and even a women's class. The class schedule allows for flexibility as well. I have no idea what the deal is with that negative review, but before I signed up I was given all the information I needed and chose to sign up anyways. It was probably one of the best decisions of my life. I really needed the training to help fill this void in my life. I was just working, hanging out drinking with my friends all the time and realized how boring and unsatisfying my life was becoming. The Muay Thai and BJJ instructions are very helpful for the beginners such as myself. I have been with the gym for about 3 years now and just love it. For those serious about fitness this is the place to go. Coaches are super committed to you and work you out like you've never worked out before. They welcome all levels and all students are respectful of each other regardless of your experience or lack thereof. This is not your big box gym experience, everyone one is committed. It is not cheap by any means but it's worth the money. I actually stopped going due to the fact that I became complacent, lazy and thought I could maintain for cheaper. WRONG. I'll be running back over there this week. I lost around 50 pounds when I was enrolled. Never felt better physically and mentally than when I went to this gym. read more

Don't get turned off by the reviews of a few curmudgeons. The people here are great, you learn great skills and get a great workout. I have been taking Brazilian jiu jitsu and Muay Thai classes here for a little over a year and a half. Make no mistake, the school will challenge you and it will test your limits, but to be perfectly honest, that is what I like about it. I also understand that is not for everybody so be prepared to be pushed. My 6 year old daughter also takes kids classes here and loves it. She has been doing it for about 3 months now and her confidence has increased just in that time. I love this place and wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I am so glad that I found out about Nak Muay Gym. It really is such a great workout and training session. All of the instructors are nice, experienced, and knowledgeable about training and fighting. The instructors encourage you to push it to your limit and train hard. The instructors will help you with techniques and learning anything that you might want to learn. There is no favoritism or competitiveness at this gym which is a nice change from most other gyms. All of the people that are training there are super nice.
