I walked in, politely gave my name, and stated I was there to pick up my order. I am an African American man. Instead of being treated like a customer, the older woman at the front counter immediately asked me, "DoorDash or UberEats?" I was confused and informed her that I was a paying customer. Moments later, two other customers entered, provided their names, and picked up their orders without being asked whether they were delivery drivers. They were not African American. The difference in treatment was clear and humiliating. This was racial profiling. What should have been a joyful moment for my family became uncomfortable and upsetting.
