I passed this shop on the way to pick up my purchases from Nordstrom last night. Note that I've previously stepped inside the shop to survey the selection, and last night I stopped in for what was only supposed to be a quick moment... The owner greeted me and almost immediately started talking prices. This is $20 dollars and we have that for $25 dollars, but this is a little more expensive, and that's this price. Oh, that fascinator is beautiful on you and you can put it layaway. It was just $79 dollars, mind you. Excuse me? It's such a turn-off when people see brown skin and assume that the purchase would be unaffordable without a payment plan! Not to mention, I started off by noting that I was only taking a quick peek on my way to pick up my Nordstrom purchase. Though I promptly told her that I don't need layaway and I pay for things outright, I had already decided that I wouldn't be buying from there. Her fixation on talking to me about price was all I needed to hear. Nothing disgusts me more than when people make assumptions! I have beautiful vintage hats in my collection, fine jewelry and quality costume jewelry, and beautiful bags that I've purchased abroad. She could've had a repeat customer who prioritizes quality goods and, more importantly, quality service.

Agree with some other reviews in that it's one of the pricier stores though you pay for the wide variety--hard to beat their selection. The course of time hasn't been kind to local production. Back in the 1820s up until the early 1980s, when mass garment production stateside was booming in NYC, the garment district employed up to 46% of the city's industrial workforce. There was a need to design and purchase materials nearby, and the majority of Manhattan's midtown west side was dedicated to factories and design studios. Fast fwd to now, that statistic is much different and given the availability of online and global sources, not everyone needs to go into a physical store to purchase their needs. While many products have long moved to overseas sourcing, for anyone who's endeavored DIY arts and crafts, or even made any functional product by hand, it's much different seeing and feeling a material in person than on a screen. That's where in this past century, stores like M&J played a vital role in the fabric of the garment district. They are also a valuable resource to the numerous design students at FIT, Parsons, etc. During past decade many a longtime stalwart trim store have disappeared from the neighborhood and M&J is the latest casualty. If you are interested in sewing or design notions, now's your chance to pick up items at their going-out-of-business sale.

They have a small Etsy shop but the factory has a massive selection that was shown with the utmost pride and enthusiasm by the staff who clearly take pride in the work they do. They offered to take any flower I selected and put it on a stick pin, hair clip, and other backing. I ended up with 3 and had them add stick pins to wear on my lapel. All 3 stunning. They also do custom flowers made from your own materials. Talk about meaningful sentimental gifts. I will surly be back!

I came here in September with a very specific floral design detail in mind for a designer dress I was wearing to an award ceremony. I had no idea what to expect, other than what I'd read from previous reviews on Yelp. When I arrived, I was directed to the back area where all the silk flowers are housed, organized by color and material in aisles of neatly stacked boxes. As I began to search and take it all in (with SO many flower options, it can be overwhelming), a woman immediately asked if I had any questions or needed help. She began pulling out boxes of flowers that I was interested in and told me to just leave them out--she'd put them away, no problem. As I came closer to finalizing my little floral design, I asked a few of the ladies if I could get their opinion. This is when it got fun! They were SO personable and helpful, and TOTAL EXPERTS on their floral-design craft! One of the women began to arrange my picked-out flowers into a beautiful design that was exactly what I wanted. Rather than try to recreate the design by myself, they told me they could bind it all together to ensure the wires of the flowers don't show and so I could just pin/sew the flowers right onto my dress. And so they did it in about 45 minutes! The cost for it all was about $125, which is a bit more than I had anticipated spending, but honestly, it was all worth it! They wrapped the thing up for me in a box to ensure it wouldn't get smushed and wished me a wonderful time at the event.
