You will not learn legitimate self-defense here. The "self-defense" techniques are against opponents that offer little to no resistance. Sparring is light to no contact. I'd say most of the people there have never taken a real punch or kick and have never been in a real fight. ZERO emphasis on ground fighting. Promotions are not based on merit. As long as you pay the fee you'll pass the test. In 5+ years I NEVER heard of anyone failing. Stick around for 4 years and you'll be a "black belt", whether you are skilled or not. I've seen kids under 10 years old get a black belt. 10 YEARS OLD!!!! What a joke. When you get higher in rank they'll pull you from your training in class to teach little brats that don't know their forms and don't want to be there, and for free no less, while you are paying expensive $$$ to train there. It's not cheap. If you are looking for legitimate self-defense look elsewhere.

I have been taking classes as CS Kim for two years, and my brother has been a student since he was four years old and he is now fourteen. Both of us have valued our time spent at CS Kim and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in studying martial arts or wants to try something new. It's the perfect activity for people of all ages. The instructor, Master Kelly, has also made my experience at CS Kim very worthwhile. He is very personable, helpful and is willing to accommodate people with all different needs and I have nothing but respect for him. There are also student assistants there who are black belts that help during the classes and are also willing to work one on one with anyone who is looking for extra instruction. Once again, I would highly recommend this place and I think that self defense is something that everyone needs to be educated on no matter what age you are.

Shorin Ryu emphasizes in-close fighting methods and natural movements for self defense. Various upper body techniques, kicks, clinching, grappling, and throws are all apart of the practice. In addition to the more modern methods of self defense, we also practice traditional training methods using futari geiko (two-person drills), kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). Fridge, Alex, Joe, and Dave are hands down the best in the area. This place is good for children, women and men. For my short time there I have seen teens with zero self esteem being built up to the great young adults. This isn't the big meathead gym that's looking to knock you out or choke you out. These guys are here to teach a great skill and care about you. I have been to other gyms in the area, where the owner/coach doesn't even know your name. For them it's all about the money. Give Ground Zero Pittsburgh a shot, it will be well worth it.
